4-voice Analog Synth with Deep Digital Multi-engine

With the Korg minilogue XD hybrid synthesizer, you’ve got a 4-voice analog synth bolstered by Korg’s digital multi-engine. Factor in the built-in effects, powerful sequencer, and micro tuning capability, and you have a full-featured sound design system at your fingertips. It’s based on the analog synth circuit from the minilogue, further refined for maximum sonic appeal. And with the digital multi-engine giving you access to four types of noise, a VPM/FM oscillator, and your own custom user oscillators, there’s a lifetime of creative potential to be explored with the Korg minilogue XD hybrid synthesizer.

Combining the best from monologue, minilogue, and Prologue

Korg essentially combined player-favorite features from their monologue, minilogue, and Prologue synthesizers to create the minilogue XD. The most notable features from the minilogue are the familiar compact form factor, 4-voice architecture, multiple voice modes, and the arpeggiator (now with a much-appreciated latch function). From the monologue, we get the motion step sequencer, the monologue’s re-voiced filter, and the ability to overdrive your signal going into said filter. And from the Prologue we get the digital multi-engine, providing the third oscillator per voice, and multiple stereo effects. Synthesists at Sweetwater are fans of each of these synths, and we’re ecstatic to see all our favorite features combined into a single synth.

Digital multi-engine for FM, wavetable, and effects

The Korg minilogue XD features the digital multi-engine first presented in the Prologue synthesizer. This gives you access to an FM/wavetable oscillator you can layer with the analog oscillators in each voice. Its sound generators include noise, variable phase modulation (VPM), and a user oscillator for your own custom oscillators (16 user slots available). This greatly expands your sonic potential beyond typical analog synth sounds. In addition to adding an oscillator, the digital multi-engine delivers deep-sounding effects using 32-bit floating-point processing.

Four voice modes for creative performance options

While the minilogue XD offers delightful polyphonic playability, you can also choose Unison mode to make it an all-unison monosynth. And Chord mode produces chords with a single key press. Arp/Latch mode features the arpeggiator with up to four voices, and it can also be used while the sequencer is running. Whether you’re looking for musical inspiration or preparing for a live performance, the minilogue XD’s flexible voice modes offer big creative potential.

Korg minilogue XD Hybrid Synthesizer Features:

  • 37-key, 4-voice polyphonic analog/digital synthesizer
  • 3 oscillators per voice, 2 analog and 1 digital (FM/wavetable)
  • monologue filter design with drive circuit
  • 32-bit floating-point digital effects engine with modulation, delay, and reverb effects
  • 16 user slots for loading custom oscillators and effects
  • CV connectivity for modular synthesizers
  • Sync I/O for synchronizing with Volca modules, Electribe drum machines, and other Korg gear
  • Polyphonic step sequencer with 16 steps supports both step recording and real-time recording
  • Motion sequencer for recording the movements of up to 4 knobs
  • Micro tuning function features 23 preset tunings created by Aphex Twin and Dorian Concept
  • Oscilloscope and motion view display provides visual feedback of your sound design

Reviews

A nice addition to my Synth Arsenal
So here is my story,

Back in January I wanted to add another Multi Voice Polyphonic Synthesizer to my Home Music Studio I really want to buy the Behringer Deepmind 12 but it was not available anywhere. So I started to look at some other options

I watched a few YouTube Reviews on this Minilogue XD and was very impressed. Because of the smaller size I had a perfect spot for it on my Music Workstation without having to rearrange anything. Then I saw a Limited Time Price Drop and grabbed it. I am glad I did.
It is a very different Analog Synthesizer from all of the others that I own. The fact that Korg opened up its Oscillators and Digital Effects Engines to any developers that want to create third party plug ins for it make it even more versatile.

The Build Quality is very nice. Front panel is made of metal, sturdy knobs with a good feel, buttons and switches that seem to be quite durable. There's a piece of wood on the backside that gives it a nice visual but I am surprised Korg put it on the back where you really can't see it, it would have been nice on the sides.

The keyboard (and this is totally subjective) feels nice, is velocity sensitive and is very playable. I like that almost all the controls for everything are on the front panel. You will need to go through some menus, to change some hidden settings there, but it is mostly minimal. I also like the added Oscilloscope on the right side giving a nice visual of the the wave shapes are actually like.

So to summarize here our my thoughts on the Pros and Cons.

PROS
Multi engine expands the sounds that you can create
Ability to load custom oscillators and effects off the internet
Simple, direct and immediate interface, for most settings
Excellent Effects and Filter
Compact size, while having many sound possibilities
Useful Sound Librarian Application

CONS but minimal
No way to see previous patch name before overwriting a slot
Buttons can feel awkward to press
No split keyboard mode for playing bass with left hand
Limited sequencer
No External Input which would make using it with other Synths going through its excellent Filter and Effects very useful.

If you want an Analog Synthesizer, albeit only 4 Voices, that has lots of sound shaping possibilities This is the Synth to get.

For the Money ,it is one of the best!
This is my Go to synth! What sold me was the User Oscillators and FX ,These let you take your synth to the next level!I use 3 party software like the Sunnysynth Minilogue editor but even with the included Sound librarian ,this synth is good for beginners or seasoned veterans . I use nothing but Korg Products!
Music background: Jazz and classically trained
Powerful, Compact & Customizable!
I love how Compact and Powerful the XD is, the analog sound is rich & deep! In addition to how user-friendly the Korg Librarian is, allowing me to add 300 additional patches from 3rd party developers. I'm very critical and somewhat of a elitist when choosing a new synthesizer to add to my minimal but powerful setup, and the XD meets my standards and sits nicely with my Nord Lead A1, Moog Minitaur & Elektron Digitakt!

Furthermore, I work in Film & Media and I'm on the road a lot, so the XD (and Elektron) has become my Weapon Of Choice when traveling in my Media Van!

Amazing Analog
I bought the Mini XD after MONTHS of research and analysis of many analog poly and monosynths. I love the warm vintage analog synth sounds found in classic rock and wanted something to faithfully recreate them. Yet, I also wanted something that offers the convenience of modern features- patch memory, sequencer, FX, etc. The XD has delivered all of this and more. My previous concern about 4-voice poly being limiting was completely shattered by how incredibly HUGE this synth can sound, especially when using the onboard FX. The 2 analog VCOs are enough to create most of the vintage 1970s sounds I'm interested in, and the digital Multi oscillator puts you into 80s FM territory. I've spent a lot of time making custom patches inspired by some of my favorite classic rock bands and am continually surprised at the versatility of this synth. I uploaded a video of some PINK FLOYD patches I've been working on so you can see how fun this machine really is! You can hear even more of the vintages sounds I've made on rawkpatches youtube and insta. Thanks Sweetwater for the amazing tech support as always!

Ridiculous Swiss Army Synth
I've had the XD for about a month, and I loved it immediately. You can read the specs and watch tutorials, but I have to speak to the emotional connection I felt with this synth. Right out of the box, the factory patches/instruments are incredible. I cannot help but feel inspired to write songs I never had the ability to before. It sounds and looks like a 21st century synth, but its sonic wingspan covers funky bass, lush 80s-sounding pads, keys, and unique leads. It feels "alive". It's also extremely accessible: the knobs and signal path are relatively straightforward, making sound design easy to visualize for early synthesis learners (like me). The 16 step sequencer is an absolute blast. I've only scratched the surface, and even still I think it's an unbelievable value. Finally, Sweetwater's customer experience is incredible, shout out to Logan. They managed a complicated shipping situation fantastically and ensured I received my gear in a reasonable time frame.
