A Feature-laden Monitor Controller with Talkback

The SPL MTC Mk2 takes everything that made its predecessor a hit, and takes it to a higher level. This monitor controller boasts a solid-feeling Volume knob, plus three monitoring modes, Mono and Dim switches, individual Mute switches for studio monitors and headphones, and mid-side monitoring. The MTC Mk2 contains enough I/O for three pairs of studio monitors, a sub, and four stereo input sources. A dedicated meter output and studio monitor level calibration ensure top-shelf sound in every application. The MTC Mk2's excellent talkback system includes a built-in microphone, plus a dedicated Level control, automatic cue mix attenuation, and hands-free control via a footswitch. You also get a top-of-the-line headphone amplifier with two headphone output jacks and dedicated level controls for each output. To top it off, the MTC Mk2 includes SPL's vaunted Phonitor Matrix technology for speaker-like performance when listening on headphones. The MTC Mk2 includes +/-18V internal operating voltage, through-hole technology on all important components, and a high-quality switched-mode power supply.

Take full command of your monitoring chain

The MTC Mk2 gives you full control over your monitoring chain. A solid-feeling aluminum knob provides easy, intuitive volume adjustment. Three monitoring modes ensure maximum flexibility. Stereo monitoring — complete with a mono compatibility check — is the standard. You can monitor a reverse-phase version of your mix via the Ø switch. You can also audition a reverse stereo version of your mix via the LR Swap switch — a must-have for film work. What's more, by using the Mono and Ø switches in concert you can monitor the mid and side portions of your mix individually. The MTC Mk2 also includes a Dim switch, plus separate Mute switches for your speakers and headphones.

Enough I/O for any studio

When we took the SPL MTC Mk2 for a test drive here at Sweetwater, we were impressed with its robust I/O. You get enough outputs for three pairs of stereo speakers, along with a mono output for a subwoofer. Each pair of outputs has a dedicated on/off switch, and there's a separate Sub switch as well. And since the subwoofer output sends a full-range signal, you can also use it to connect a single mono monitor speaker. You get four stereo inputs, each with a dedicated on/off switch. Inputs A–C features balanced TRS jacks, while input D includes an RCA input for consumer playback devices. You can also use input C as a cue mix input. A dedicated meter output and studio monitor level calibration is also included.

Easy communication with the artist

The MTC Mk2 boasts an impressive talkback system, complete with a built-in condenser mic. The built-in microphone features a top-shelf design derived from the technology employed by measurement microphones. The talkback system is activated via a Talk button, which lights up when pressed. You also get a dedicated Level control for the talkback signal. The talkback signal is routed to the Talk Out jack on the MTC Mk2's rear panel, where it can either be fed into a speaker in the recording room or sent back to your DAW. Engaging the talkback system automatically attenuates the artist's cue mix, and the attenuation is fully adjustable. To top it off, a Footswitch input enables hands-free use of the MTC Mk2's talkback system.

Top-shelf sound for your headphones

If you demand top-quality sound from your headphones, you're in luck. The SPL MTC Mk2's headphone amplifier boasts a push-pull, Class AB design, which yields higher gain and higher output voltage than Class A amplifiers. The amplifier's output stage transistors are thermally coupled for consistent operation and a stable sound image. Beyond that, the MTC Mk2's buffered power supply facilitates great sound, even with low-impedance headphones. The MTC Mk2 includes two headphone output jacks, each with a dedicated level control.

Speaker-like monitoring with headphones

You'll be able to use your headphones more effectively when you monitor through the MTC Mk2, thanks to its integrated Phonitor Matrix. The Phonitor Matrix re-creates the spatial effects of listening on stereo loudspeakers (listening angle and crosstalk between left and right channels) in your headphones. Headphones are a great tool for magnifying edit points, unwanted clicks and pops, fades, and other details in your recordings. For this type of editing, turn off the Phonitor Matrix spatial processing. Then turn the Phonitor Matrix mode on when you're ready to make adjustments to panning, EQ, effects sends, and other mixing tasks. The realistic stereo imaging of the Phonitor Matrix mode will allow you to achieve better mixing results than you otherwise would with headphones.

Note: If you're using a cue mix, the producer's mix includes the Phonitor Matrix signal; the artist's mix will hear their monitor mix without Phonitor Matrix processing.

Hear what you've been missing....
This monitor controller stands out as one of the most feature-rich, transparent-sounding, and capable options available. It fulfills a long-standing need in the affordable market. Simultaneous selection of multiple speakers and monitoring inputs is easily achievable. While not everyone may require these capabilities, the frequent occurrence of this question in various forums prompted me to share my experience.
In the past, the common advice was to either be prepared to invest a lot or settle for a more budget-friendly option with a less-than-desirable, colorful sound.
Personally, I have sought these functions for various reasons, and finding a solution with extensive options has always been a challenge. I am thoroughly satisfied with this purchase from SPL; they have truly excelled in delivering audio as it should be: clear and transparent.

Amazing
This unit has zero coloration that I can detect, and does what it's made to do. The unit I received actually had a defect in one of the push buttons, and Sweetwater made things right by sending a replacement.
