Tri-surface Practice Pad from Anika Nilles and Meinl

With its three playing surfaces, the Anika Nilles Signature Split Tone practice pad from Meinl gives you three distinct tones and responses to build hand independence and make practice and warm-ups a non-drudgery. The center of this 12-inch pad is a standard Meinl practice pad, which is where most drummers will perform the majority of their exercises and rudiments. Moving out to the red secondary pads reveals a higher tone, where you can approximate tom-snare rhythms or split up patterns to hear each hand in new ways. Finally, a soft muted oval section at the top lets you isolate hands to identify areas to work on. Around back, the Anika Nilles Signature Split Tone gives you a full 12-inch diameter workout surface to build muscle and practice after hours. Looking to take your chops to the next level? Have a look at the Meinl Anika Nilles Signature Split Tone 12-inch practice pad from Sweetwater.

Reviews

Great concept and execution!
The first one I ordered was defective -- one of the red dots actually was softer and had a lower, hollow sound to it. Meinl and the dealer I ordered it from replaced it for free, and send me a label to return the original defective one. It was annoying but I got to have a chance to talk briefly with the person responsible for product R&D for practice pads at Meinl and learn more about the design and production challenges they face. They were really interested in learning what went wrong with the pad and seem very keen to maintain high quality standards.

The replacement pad they sent works great, no defects with it. I really like the concept a lot. It is designed to help you practice building symmetrical capacity in both hands, as well as to help isolate or emphasize one hand or the other, which gives you 6 different practice options for anything that you are playing, depending on which hand leads and whether you are isolating or emphasizing the left or right hand. I've already identified several areas that need improvement with the help of the pad.

Apart from the manufacturing defect I think it's very well-executed. I'm a little concerned about the durability of the soft foam but hope it will last a good long while if I treat it well (e.g., transport it in its included bag for less wear and tear). We will see how long it lasts. Their R&D person said that they are revamping their marshmallow pads with a fabric cover to aid durability.

I also have a Drumeo P4 practice pad. That pad more closely mimics an actual kit in its layout, so it's asymmetrical with a "snare" "hi hat" "ride/crash" and "floor tom/soft/quiet" surface. It also has a very different sound and feel. I find the Meinl pad's rubber generally has more rebound than the P4 pad, and that I use them differently based on the psychological effect of their layouts. The Meinl pad just begs for a technical workout session, whereas the P4's kit-like analogy emphasizes a little more creativity in practice. Between these two pads and a kick pad, I have a lot of practice options.

Smells like teen nilles!
Ok hopefully she never smelled like neoprene or whatever, but defintely the only drawback is the off gassing of the rubber material! Excellent pad otherwise purchasing a second for work.
Really needs more development time
I was really excited to get this pad and when it came I was disappointed. The pad itself feels cheaply made and reeks of this artificial stench, like it came straight out of the factory and onto my porch. Second, the main surface pad is way too hard to be a proper gum rubber pad, it's comparable to the hard side of a RealFeel pad. Third, the foam feels very cheap and you can see where it is glued on, not to mention it is not centered on my pad. Fourth, the surfaces are not distinct enough. Playing in a small room makes it harder to hear the already subtle differences in the pitches between the normal and high-pitched pads which makes it useless for me. Overall I would say to not get this pad, and that Meinl should improve it by making the wood base thicker, making the normal pad softer and the high pitched pad harder, and changing their manufacturing process so that the pad feels solid.
