Mini Yet Mighty: Akai’s Monstrous MPK MIDI, Revamped

The Akai Professional MPK MINI IV, the fourth generation of mini yet monstrous MIDI might, has arrived, and Sweetwater’s production pros are enamored by its series-defining advancements. In this emboldened iteration, an overhauled keybed joins a suite of expanded compositional, performance, workflow, and navigation tools, re-engineered for comprehensive integration with your favorite DAWs and painstakingly pre-mapped for instant activation. Integration with Akai’s Studio Instrument Collection brings up to 1,000 sounds to supercharge your sonic aperture, while a host of velocity-sensitive and expression controls ensure every ounce of your vision is brought to life with uncompromising detail and character. As the godfather of groove crafting, Akai Professional is known the world over for historic innovations that weave through and build upon every instrument and tool produced since its seminal MPC. The MPK series marries the hands-on interactivity of the renowned MPC with the musical versatility and DAW-driven production possibilities of modern MIDI, inspiring producers and musicians with each new release. This is the Akai Professional MPK Mini IV.

Figures of four: next-gen production power

Let’s start with the logical question: What makes this MPK different from its pint-sized predecessors? Akai’s engineers started with the keybed, methodically upgrading it to reach industry-leading standards of 25-key interactivity, while the octet of MPC-grade performance pads is fully velocity sensitive, with RGB backlighting to seamlessly fuse visual feedback with focused responsiveness. Adding to the controller’s expressive architrave, the MPK Mini IV features dedicated Pitch and Modulation wheels, borrowing from its larger-sized series siblings to empower on-the-go producers and dynamic onstage performers with hands-on precision and satisfying tactility.

Onboard transport controls have been augmented and expanded to amplify and empower your workflow to meet the innovative possibilities of the latest-gen DAWs and creative tools. Built-in integration with Studio Instrument Collection, direct access to 1,000 sounds spanning the award-winning Akai Pro, Moog, and AIR software instruments, and a full-color screen for instant visual feedback make navigating this galvanizing world of sonic potential as unobtrusive as possible.

Programmed for prismatic pliability — DAW, optional

As the roles of software and hardware continue to evolve in artists’ workflows, hybrid arrangements and ambitious interfacing opportunities abound. Here, Akai refused to let the MPK Mini IV’s low-footprint form factor forbid it from foraying into the fold. The MPK Mini IV is upgraded with a USB-C connection that doubles as both bus power and bidirectional MIDI and features a separate 5-pin MIDI output, making simultaneous multi-point control of myriad virtual and physical effects, instruments, and tools a breeze in the studio or on the stage.

Furthermore, each of its eight rotary encoders is RGB-backlit and fully assignable, supplying an additional dimension of hands-on sound shaping, and with revamped arpeggiator capabilities spanning Pattern, Arp Freeze, and Mutate functions, each one is explosively intriguing and experimentation-rewarding in production and live environments. Likewise, a wealth of Scale and Chord modes streamlines your capacity for playing in key, developing harmonies, and crafting evocative progressions. Finally, the MPK Mini IV comes pre-packaged with programmed DAW scripts to instantly integrate with Ableton Live, FL Studio, Cubase, and Logic Pro right out of the box — no-hassle 1-to-1 mapping is right at your fingertips.

Note: Please contact your Sweetwater Sales Engineer with any questions or concerns regarding use or compatibility with your DAW.

Great on the go keyboard
Bought this for a portable rig - works perfectly and lots of flexibility
Music background: Guitarist, production, mixing & mastering, former studio engineer
this is fun
just to be honest, i"m an old guy. That is not important.i am having so much fun playing this insrument.
You buy Akai you know what your getting

As usual akai delivers another product that's nice a reliable and does exactly what it's meant to do. A bit bigger lcd would have been better but for it's not so terrible. Also you know sweetwater will always get your gear to you quickly hence why I shop at sweetwater.

nice device. much improved keys
This review is just about the keys. I tried a Mini MK3 a couple years ago, and the toy-like keyboard was just beyond horrible. The MK4 is 100 percent better .. they are not "mini keys". The MK4 keys are the exact same size as the Arturia "Slimkey" on some of the KeySteps (I have a keystep 32). So .. this keyboard on the MK4 is very nice .. MUCH more playable than the MK3. The rest of the device is nice too (pads, transport controls, and definitely the wheels!). So .. yes, I recommend this device as a nice little controller that can easily sit in front of you on a desk so you can work on projects. When you need a "real" keybed for more "robust" playing .. use a bigger controller.
$ Monster!
You cannot beat it for the price! I like the Studio Instruments pack. It works nicely with Logic Pro. I can plug my 30 year old Yamaha into my MacBook alone either the Akai and play both at the same time!
Now I just need to learn to play!
Music background: My background is in the shadows.
