All-solid-tonewood Parlor Perfection

Give your parlor (or equivalent room) a taste of the good life with the Masterworks MP66 acoustic guitar from Alvarez! This all-solid-tonewood parlor player boasts top-notch tonewoods enhanced with masterful attention to playability and looks. The MP66 may be small, but its sound is incredibly warm, hearty, and full due to a top, back, and sides crafted from solid African mahogany. Mahogany’s rustic sound and looks pair perfectly with the MP66’s parlor size, and internal spruce bracing keeps the MP66 sounding strong and competitive. Factor in a smooth mahogany neck with a hybrid “V” to “C” shape and an upgraded rosewood fingerboard, and you’re in a playing experience that’s as joyful as it is smooth. The Masterworks MP66 is also a sight to behold. An inviting gloss finish, hardware made from wood and bone, a slotted headstock, and an eye-catching abalone fingerboard inlay are just a few of the appointments we’ve seen turn heads here at Sweetwater. For a parlor built to exceed your expectations, choose the Masterworks MP66 from Sweetwater.

Crafted from mighty mahogany

After experiencing the Masterworks MP66, many guitarists at Sweetwater cite mahogany as the perfect tonewood choice for a parlor guitar. A mahogany top, back, and sides keep the MP66 sounding rich and full, while mahogany’s midrange presence lends notes and chords a visceral feel that makes it easy to get lost in the music. The MP66’s sound chamber features forward-shifted spruce bracing, a modern update to a classic style that helps the MP66’s top vibrate more freely so it can produce more volume. With mahogany tonewoods and Masterworks craftsmanship in abundance, the MP66 proves that a parlor guitar can hang with its bigger-sized brethren with aplomb!

Comfortable design from the neck down

The Masterworks MP66 Parlor is packed with comfortable features that invite you to play any time, whether for a spare minute or hours on end! The parlor body style’s slim depth and size make it a comfortable player sitting down — even with bad posture on lazy days! Likewise, a rosewood fingerboard and a mahogany neck keep your fretting hand comfortable. Alvarez carefully developed this neck’s hybrid soft “V” to “C” profile to deliver ideal anchor space in any position. Toward the headstock, the “V” shape yields a better grip for 6-string open and barre chords; further up, the “C” shape gives hands more room for expression and thinking outside the box.

Hardware details that make a difference

This guitar spares no detail, even when it comes to the small things. A plethora of premium onboard hardware ensures this guitar is both beautiful and rugged, so you can rely on it for years to come. A true bone nut and saddle maximize the vibrational transfer from strings to body and ensure you’re getting the purest tone possible out of the MP66’s body and top. The bridge and bridge pins are both made from rosewood, which also enhances vibrational transfer. The headstock features Masterworks tuning machines with an upgraded high-performance 20:1 gear ratio for precise results that hold tunings accurately and for longer.

Reviews

sweet as pie

I am over the moon! What quality! Beautiful red mahagony. I finally understand true responsiveness in a guitar. You can talk about it, but once you've truly experienced it, there's no goin back!

Sweet as pie! I also own the Ap66shbe, which is laminate, vs all solid on the Masterworks. 2 completely different voices! The laminate is louder, deeper tones, but the all solid has a clarity and responsiveness that is like fine cut crystal. very happy with this parlor guitar!!! The sound is so beautiful. (I will lower action a smidge).

Thank you to my sales rep, Michael Berry for helping me along my way to find this beauty! Buy this guitar with confidence! You will love this parlor.

Music background: newbie again, after 50 years away since '75.
MP66 great guitar for the money
I've played dreadnought, jumbo, and 000 sized guitars for more than 60 years. Recently I decided that maybe a smaller guitar would be fun and a bit more comfortable to play on the couch. Having purchased an Alvarez from Sweetwater in the past, I was pretty confident that the Masterworks level of a parlor would fit the bill, without much risk.

I received the guitar in a couple days and I must say it is right there with my Martins, Gibsons, and Guild in terms of fit and build quality. The finish, being poly, is a wee bit on the thick side, but it is applied flawlessly. In time, these finishes tend to mellow out, but right now I can hear the difference from my nitro finished guitars. We'll see how some aging might help.

The sound of the guitar is huge, warm and rich, especially given its small size, and not as nasally as I'd feared it might be. I really enjoy the tone of this little guy. The neck is shaped perfectly for my hands, and of course the shorter scale means it plays effortlessly. I had to lower the nut slots slightly and tweak the truss rod. That is typical of any new guitar, so that doesn't bother me at all.

All in all, I rate this guitar at about an 8.5 and I'm pretty picky. I rate my Sweetwater rep, Victor Gomez a solid 10. He's always responsive and ready to help me get what I need. Thanks Victor and the great Sweetwater team. You all do a fantastic job.
Music background: Guitar player and singer since the mid 60s.
Excellent quality parlor guitar

I sold my Takamine EF407 Koa for this MP66 and already like it much more, so no regrets there. First off, the neck profile is wayyy better for me, very slim with a soft V extremely similar to (if not the same as) my high end Yairi FYM66HD which is the famed Honduran Mahogany version. I wanted something with similar feel and gorgeous looks at an intermediate price point and this Alvarez Masterworks absolutely delivers using African Mahogany instead.

Speaking of which, the mahogany is stunningly beautiful and the satin neck is killer, not to mention the ideal looks of the binding and rosette inlay. 12 frets to the body and the 24" short scale is better for a true parlor than the Takamine which was 14 frets to the body, and closer to an OOSS in overall size. The fuller body depth gives it a lovely and resonant sound quality. I had to tighten up the truss a lot after receiving as one may expect, and better to arrive loose than the opposite.

Bone nut and saddle from the factory are excellent appointments, along with the solid wood construction of the Masterworks series. I'm sure the saddle can come down a little bit to make it even more playable. Only drawback so far is that the fingerboard is very scratchy on vibrato so I will certainly look to recondition it on the next string change with D'Addario XS 12-53. The case is pretty great for what it is, also.

I originally wanted the Yairi Masterworks Parlor...but this one fit my current budget (sold the Takamine for the same price) and honestly does not feel like dropping off a cliff in difference from Yairi, plus I have the OM, and wanted the parlor to not be overly concerned with the handling of it. Literally it looks very much like my Yairi except made in PRC. Of course the Yairi is the superior instrument if you can swing it, but likely not $ difference better than this. I am not at all disappointed with my decision.

I think Alvarez totally knocked it out of the park with the MP66 Masterworks Parlor. Did I mention the guitar is stunningly beautiful?

Big Voice for a Palor Guitar
First, I'm an advanced beginner guitar player. (I know, advanced beginner? Jumbo Shrimp!!) Once I opened the packaging, the first thing I noticed was the quality gig bag. Well padded, plenty of space for picks etc. and the guitar gets strapped in, so it is well secured. Then I examined the guitar. It arrived in absolutely flawless condition and set-up perfectly. It plays like a dream and has a much bigger sound than expected. I find it well balanced as the low, midrange and high ends all ring out with clarity. It is also a piece of art with the front and side mahogany body. A special shout out to my sales engineer Aaron Cornelio. I had actually ordered another acoustic but the arrival date kept getting pushed back. Aaron kept me informed the whole time and when I decided to change my order to the Alvarez, I couldn't believe how fast he got it set-up and shipped to me! So, Aaron, your rating from 1-10 is 11! (Just like Spinal Tap You're one higher)
Music background: Advanced Beginner (ha ha)
Absolutely lovely and worth every penny
I'm not one to write reviews since I'm just a beginner with not much experience with guitars in general, but it's been a year and some months since I bought and received this guitar, and I still feel like I gave myself a wonderfully indulgent gift, so I thought I'd share my thoughts and maybe help a prospective buyer out. I itch to pick up and play (and admire) my guitar every day. The guitar itself is SO well made and beautiful, sounds lovely, and it smells nice and woody, too. I did a bunch of research prior to picking the Alvarez MP66, and I'm glad I did. I wanted a small-bodied, wide-necked guitar, as someone who likes the idea of fingerstyle/fingerpicking, and something rather affordable too. The MP66 is just right for me. I suppose the all-mahogany woods contributes to the guitar's "small" sound, which was what I was looking for to learn, practice, play, and sing for myself at home. I would describe the sound as dark and sad and a bit moody, or not very bright nor sparkly, and I don't hear extra overtones like I do on my other parlor, which is an Eastman E20P (spruce, rosewood, for playing out because it's so loud and bold). I hesitate to say "weak" for its sound because the sound projects well when using a pick, but not as well when playing fingerstyle, which is good for me, because I cannot sing very loud unless if I want to be shouting. I have to sing much louder when playing with a pick. The finish is very nice. It was flawless when I received the guitar, and it now has scratches where expected, so it marks up sorta easily. I love how the headstock looks. The satin neck is nice, but I do find that it feels a bit skinny for me at times, feels difficult/fatiguing sometimes hammering on the lower strings when also holding a chord (I guess not enough neck to grip?). Might also be the way my hands are. The lack of fret markers on the fretboard makes the guitar look very clean from the front. The side dots are a bit small for me, but also not a big deal. The mustache-shaped saddle is very comfortable. I hardly notice it when playing. The gig bag is so nice too, it's legit. It's very thick, stiff, padded, has reflective bits, and has pockets in the front for my binder, but the backpack straps are non-stowable. I thought this would bother me, but it never ended up bothering me. All in all, I'm still 100% satisfied more than a year later, and my guitar playing has improved vastly cuz of how much I love picking this guitar up!
