Eliminate String Buzz One Fret at a Time

Need to plane down a high fret or two? Don’t break out the leveling beam just yet — MusicNomad’s Fret Leveler Diamond U-File hones in on your problem frets, negating the need for a full fretboard level. The files in this set function just like a fret rocker, with three differently sized files included to span across any three frets on your instrument’s fingerboard. However, unlike a rocker, the center portion of the design features a diamond abrasive that’s perfectly level with the two smooth outer edges. This allows you to cut only the high fret and bring it back into line with the rest of the fretboard. Sweetwater’s Guitar Workshop luthiers love how the Fret Leveler Diamond U-File’s open-channel design allows for filing even when the instrument is strung up to full tension. What’s more, each file also comes with a comfortable low-profile handle, notches for visual indication of the cutting surface, and a hole for hanging on your tool wall. Eliminate string buzz and bring your instrument back into peak playing condition one fret at a time with MusicNomad’s Fret Leveler Diamond U-File.

Note: The MusicNomad Fret Leveler Diamond U-File set’s three files are not long enough to be used on the first five frets of most bass guitars. For more information, please contact your Sweetwater Sales Engineer.

Tackle guitars, basses, and more with three files

MusicNomad’s Fret Leveler file rests across three of your instrument’s frets, wearing a smooth stainless-steel finish on the outer ends and a diamond abrasive center. This setup allows you to file only the middle fret within the 3-fret span, bringing a high fret back down to the plane of the two outside frets — and, thus, the rest of the fretboard, provided you’re starting with a reasonably level surface! However, the distance required to span three frets can vary dramatically depending both on your respective instrument’s scale and your position on the fretboard itself.

Luckily, MusicNomad includes a comprehensive trio of Fret Leveler files within this kit, including a 1.25-inch file, a 2-inch file, and a 3-inch file. These three files allow you to take on a high fret almost anywhere on your instrument’s fingerboard, whether it be a guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin, or ukulele.

Ergonomic and efficient “U-File” design

This tool’s distinctive “U-File” design comprises a precision-made stainless-steel foundation, with all edges deburred and rounded over to prevent marring your frets or finish. A low-profile ergonomic handle ensures secure and steady filing, while the notches provide a visual indicator of the abrasive area to stay on target. Furthermore, while the Fret Leveler Diamond U-File is perfect for standard leveling applications with the strings removed, its open U-channel allows you to file down high frets even when the strings are on the instrument at full tension.

MusicNomad Fret Leveler Diamond U-File Features:

  • Innovative fret leveling files that allow you to file down a single fret at a time, removing the need for a full fret job on an otherwise level fingerboard
  • Works on guitars, basses, banjos, mandolins, ukuleles, and more
  • Includes a 1.25-inch file, a 2-inch file, and a 3-inch file to span 3-fret surfaces anywhere on your fretted instrument’s fingerboard
  • Diamond-coated abrasive center cuts quickly and cleanly for fast, efficient filing
  • U-channel design allows for leveling even when the strings are on at full tension
  • Comfortable low-profile handle
  • Notches and arrows provide a visual indication of the cutting surface’s position when filing
  • Crafted from heavy-duty 0.059-inch stainless steel, with an ultra-flat surface accurate to +/-.00125 in./ft.
  • Hang holes for easy storage on your tool wall, in addition to an included storage case
  • All edges deburred and rounded over to prevent marring of your frets and finish

Read the fine print!
These files work great. I didn't read the fine print. I bought these to work on a bass. Fortunately I didn't need them any lower than the 7th fret. Buy the StewMac fret kisser. It works on all fretted instruments, for about the same $. Now I have to shell out the money for the StewMac, unless Musicnomad puts one out soon. I'm not sure why they wouldn't put out a set to work on all fretted instruments. Techs don't work on just Guitar's
Neat idea but not a complete solution
THis is a cool idea as it gets beneath strings to lower a high fret. The issue is once you have lowered (aka FLATTENED) you need to crown it ... how are you supposed to do that with strings on? So while I applaud the idea, it really doesn't get you there any better than doing it the right way to begin with.
