Sire’s Take on the King of Sting

The Marcus Miller Z3 bass guitar is Sire’s top-class throwback to the stinging sound of the late 1970s, capturing the gritty, aggressive bite of an all-time low-end classic. Starting with a lightweight mahogany body in a well-balanced Z-Bass carve, the Z3 sports an assortment of vintage-inspired appointments, including an oval-shaped pickguard, swooping control plate, oversized bridge-position humbucker, and rock-solid Standard MM bridge. The hard maple neck’s C profile offers a fast, speedy, and supremely comfortable feel. Meanwhile, the matching hard maple fingerboard’s Edgeless treatment, 12-inch radius, and 22 medium-jumbo frets form a fitting foundation for all manner of fingerboard heroics. You also get an active Marcus Heritage-3 active/passive preamp system, complete with a 3-band EQ for exacting tonal precision. Whether you’re a dedicated slapper or simply seeking a rock-solid all-rounder for your next gig, the Sire Marcus Miller Z3 is ready to take the mantle!

Straight out of the late 1970s

Based on one of the most iconic bass guitars of the 1970s and beyond, the Sire Marcus Miller Z3’s mahogany body provides unfettered access to the upper frets and a comfortably balanced double-cut composition. From the oval-shaped pickguard to the swooping metal control plate, the Z3 wears its inspiration with pride — right down to the single oversized bridge-position humbucker, fittingly dubbed the Sire Standard MM pickup. It’s all finished off with a rounded forearm contour that Sweetwater bassists love for its ability to fight off fatigue during marathon gigs and sessions.

Fast-playing C-profile neck

Whether you’re picking up the bass for the very first time or are a longtime touring veteran, choosing a bass that feels comfortable in your hand is imperative. Luckily, the Sire Marcus Miller Z3 boasts a classic C-profile maple neck, a classic among both guitarists and bassists, revered for its ability to accommodate players of all styles and backgrounds. A matching hard maple fingerboard studded with high-performance medium-jumbo frets sits atop the neck. Best of all, the Z3’s neck is finished with Sire’s Edgeless rolled fingerboard edge treatment for a sleek and supple feel from the first fret to the 22nd.

Heritage-3 preamp system unlocks unlimited sonic potential

No matter what styles of music you play, you’ll definitely appreciate the Marcus Miller Z3’s amazing tonal range. It’s equipped with a Heritage-3 active/passive preamp system, allowing you to get as surgical with your tone as you like. Leave it in passive mode for a pure, organic bass thump; engage active mode and gain access to three bands of EQ that make it easy to cement your place in the mix.

Reviews

Z3
This is a fantastic instrument. It is lovely. It plays great. It sounds great. There is no excuse not to get one. At this price it's a steal. I was on the fence about which color to get, but I am extremely taken with the blue. So get one. That's all I have to say about that.
Music background: well experienced
such a sweet bass and no diiapointments here.
Okay, I used it just last night on a Wednesday night show after unboxing it just the night before.
It sounded and played incredibly as the highs are really snappy and the lows are super buttery and deep when tuning in on the very versatile onboard preamp.
I was initially hesitant to buy in blue but here is somewhat of a sign as the first time I took it out of the case a patron at the club just happened to walk by and say that he loved the color which was so very Forest Gump and very cool because I did not buy it for the color as my purchase was based on hi sonic and structural hopes.
I bought and sold several Music Man basses in the past and they are great instruments for what they are but this Z3 has a deeper and more Fender like low end and also delivers the sizzling highs that an Ernie Ball MM bass can deliver.
One small but important factory over sight was while swapping out the strings for my favorite DR High beams and lowering the action to my personal taste I discovered that the nut was not glued in and was ready to pop out of it's slot so I simply just applied a couple drops of glue and this potential big problem solved in 30 seconds.
Sweetwater's service and Billy Germano's sales service is always exceptional and they will always be my first choice.
Music background: working musician for of 50 yrs, and .with no plans to ever say uncle.
