A Premium 4-string at an Intermediate Price

The Sire Marcus Miller V5R 4-string bass guitar sports a jazzy essence that’s directly inspired by Marcus’ bass of choice, only updated and elevated with a host of modern features! A traditional offset-waist alder body forms the core of this 4-string’s classic style, and it's loaded with a pair of Marcus Vintage Fat-J Revolution pickups for a slightly modernized take on a classic low-frequency single-coil. Hunting after a high-performance bass? The neck’s roasted maple construction ensures that it says straight as an arrow, while the comfortable “C”-shape neck and rolled edges on the rosewood fingerboard allow for effortless gliding up and down the neck. Finally, the Marcus Miller Vintage-S tailpiece and Premium Open-gear tuners outfit the V5R with professional-level reliability that defies its intermediate price!

A neck to unlock your full 4-string potential

Rosewood on top of maple: it’s one of the most tried-and-true tonewood recipes in the book for a reason! The Marcus Miller V5R puts this pairing to good use with the equally ubiquitous “C” neck profile — a pleasantly middle-of-the-road shape the Sweetwater bassists find is a smart choice for genre- and style-hopping musicians. On the top side, the beautiful rosewood fingerboard boasts a 9.5-inch radius and medium frets ready to tackle all manner of low-end applications, while the rolled fingerboard edges keep everything smooth and friction-free when gliding up and down the neck.

Pro-level hardware

Ask any bassist at Sweetwater and they’ll be quick to tell you that a bass is only as good as its hardware, especially if you’re looking to take it out to a gig! Marcus Miller must certainly agree, considering his collaboration with Sire on the V5R has resulted in a modestly priced bass with incredibly solid hardware, ensuring your bass remains reliable, song after song. The Sire Marcus Miller Vintage-S bridge is the key to the V5R’s stability, providing excellent string-to-body contact for enhanced sustain. On the other side of the instrument, a set of Sire’s Premium Open-gear tuners keeps your tuning steady, and the true bone nut tops it off with improved natural resonance.

Vintage-style pickups with a modern twist

Sire’s Marcus Vintage Fat-J Revolution pickups are, unsurprisingly, a revolution in the world of low-frequency pickup design, providing the best tonal bits of the vintage and modern worlds. Just like the pickups in Marcus’ own bass, these pickups utilize a ’70s-style pickup spacing that’s closer to the bridge, resulting in a punchier, treblier tone. From rock to funk to jazz and back again, Marcus Vintage Fat-J Revolution pickups are as versatile as the player that inspired them!

Sire Marcus Miller V5R 4-string Bass Guitar Features:

  • Traditional North American alder body for a warm and resonant tonal foundation
  • Exceptionally stable roasted hard maple neck
  • Comfortable “C”-profile neck is sure to please players of all backgrounds
  • Rosewood fingerboard with smooth rolled edges
  • Medium frets in a 9.5-inch radius for a modern playing experience
  • Rock-solid Marcus Miller Vintage-S bridge and Premium Open-gear tuners
  • Marcus Vintage Fat-J Revolution pickups deliver a punchy low end with growling mids and highs

Reviews

Strong competition to Indonesian and Ensenada Fender 70's Jazz basses.
The fit and finish on my September purchased Sire Z3 bass was excellent, so I decided again in October to go for a Sire V5R with a natural alder body finish; the only bonafide "jazz" bass I had was a fretless, and I had a hankering to buy a fretted jazz bass anyway. With the online pictures, and the slight price increase of this model over my already excellent Sweetwater/Sire Z3, my expectations were indeed rather high. At the outset, I was very impressed with it, but quickly realized that the "fit" didn't actually match the "finish" like in the case of the Z3. After 7 weeks of ownership, it's a good bass worth its cost, and I'm so happy with it, but I had to spend some time, in order to avoid an RMA. Setup was required, and luckily, as a technician myself, no problem; mostly string height and intonation adjustments at the bridge. The nut slot string heights were slightly out of spec, but close enough not to bother with (only 0.010" higher than should be). And then the frets needed a little polishing, mostly the edges. The fret job on this particular bass was not as high quality as my Z3, but acceptable. Again, no big deal. Fretboard wood a bit dry, but on the next string change, another oiling should do it. Some of these issues are typical, even for basses costing a lot more. At this point, I was happy, but then became miffed because the tone and (bridge) pickup volume controls got really scratchy only after playing the bass a few weeks. Adding insult to injury, when I plugged in the next day, the jack when right through the plate, because the nut was holding on by only a partial thread. Apparently, it worked loose after some insertions and I didn't realize it. Very luckily, no damage, no lost parts, and I was able to reassemble; since I had to take the plate off, I cleaned out the potentiometer assemblies with contact cleaner spray. They weren't sealed potentiometers, and "dirt" got in.. the "problems" are solved for now, but my hope is this is not an indication of poor quality electrical components that will soon need replacement. At this time, it appears that the assembly environment was dirty and the circuitry improperly handled in assembly. The takeaway here is that, regardless of manufacturer, improper handling or inspection by any specific employee at the manufacturing plant regarding fit and finish of a product can taint customer's perception. At the end of the day, the V5R can be a great jazz bass, if you so desire. It really is what they say in the product brief. I also get Marcus Miller's enthusiasm for this product. Even if you can't do your own tech work, I'd take a chance on this one. Sweetwater will want you to be satisfied. In my case, I'm confident that Sweetwater or Sire will be able to cover me on any electrical parts that may be required under the warranty period.
