Comfortable Short-scale Bass from Sire

The Sire Marcus Miller U5 4-string bass guitar puts a lot of comfortable playability into your hands at a great price. This 30-inch, short-scale, slim-carved bass features a North American alder body for lightweight feel and wonderful resonance. The hard maple neck and fingerboard are smooth, responsive, and easy on the hand and fingers — ideal for laying down silky bass lines. And when you are ready to plug in, the Marcus Super PJ Revolution pickup set delivers sweet low-end tone with a balanced midrange.

Pair of pickups wired for versatile tone

The U5's Marcus Super PJ Revolution pickup set is wired for incredible tone. Made with a US-manufactured coil and Alnico V magnets, these pickups let you tap into the unique tones from classic basses, giving you a wide range of stylistic options. With these pickups, you can dial in the vintage jazz tones of yesteryear as well as more powerful, punchy bass tones. Bass players here at Sweetwater are incredibly impressed with the versatility of this awesome pickup duo!

Rolled-edge fingerboard makes all the difference

The shorter scale of the U5 along with the rolled edges of the hard maple fingerboard make this neck incredibly comfortable and fun to play. A fingerboard with rolled edges means a much smoother feel up and down the neck — no nicks or kinks to hinder or hurt your fingers as they move! In addition, the C-shaped profile of this neck sits beautifully in your hand for hours of easy playing.

Reviews

Sire U5 Bass
Was hoping this little beast would live up to all the hype and it did" Fantastic feel workmanship as noted by others its in another class carved body top with binding wow"Still dialing in the tones but so far fantastic options with that quite J pick-up. THE only thing I would change wish it had a Roasted neck to match My Sire D5. but that's more looks in this case.Only Modes I did was Hipshot Ultra-lite Tunners and Flat wound strings thru body.
Great short scale bass
This is the best short scale I've tried. Great sound and intonation which is something I struggled with on my other shorty. First time buying a bass from Sweetwater and I'm super impressed with the setup they did. Playable right out of the box. I bought this bass based on many reviews of Marcus Miller and I'm glad I did. Also buying from Sweetwater is a great experience, Levi was very helpful.
Great things do come in small packages!
I did a lot of research on this, and a few other short-scale basses. This is the one that kept floating to the top.
Due to a left shoulder issue, I haven't been able to play a standard bass. The weight wasn't the issue, but the reach. I couldn't play anything below the 3rd fret. (age is a heartless B*tch) So I figured my best option was a short-scale bass if I wanted to continue gigging.

Right out of the box, this thing is GORGEOUS! The finish is as nice, if not a nicer than instruments at 3-4 times the cost. It gets a lot of attention from my musician brethren.

The neck reminds me of my Fender Jazz, so I took to the feel right away.
Though I can't get the sound I'm used to (I prefer active electronics) this thing sounds great for a passive instrument!

Even if I do go back to my standard bass, I will be holding on to this bass. Some of my gigs require air travel and I found this bass fits perfectly in the "Gator ICON Series Bag for Electric Guitars". This is a much more travel-friendly size when trying to find room in the overhead or closet.

So whether you're looking for a short-scale to compensate for body-mechanic restrictions, or you just what a bass for smaller hands, I highly recommend this little gem!
Music background: 45 years (Jazz, Blues, R&B, etc)
One of the best short scales out there!
I've tried a few short scales but the U5 has got them beat on sound, playability, features and price. I highly recommend grabbing one of these.
More review.
After owning this bass for a few weeks I would like to add to my first review. The rolled edge fingerboard is a great touch. The body contours on this bass are usually only found on more expensive instruments. The body taper at the neck heel is another nice feature. The tuning key posts are tapered for a nice and secure string wind. This instrument is quickly becoming my main bass. I have installed a nice old set of D'Addario Chromes flatwound strings that compliment this bass perfectly for several styles of music. Other than the strings nothing on this bass needs to be upgraded.
Music background: Lots of touring in the 70s from the LA coliseum to Carnegie Hall.
