Outstanding Tenor Ukulele from Kala

If you're looking to buy your first ukulele and don't want to break the bank or sacrifice quality, the Kala Makala Classic Tenor uke is one of the best deals on the market. This quality ukulele offers great tonewoods, solid craftsmanship, and impeccable uke tone — all from a company that has been dedicated to ukes and nothing but ukes for decades. Ukulele enthusiasts here at Sweetwater love the Makala Classic Tenor for its affordability, craftsmanship, and stellar tone.

Time-tested tonewoods, classic sound

One of the standouts of the Makala Classic is its all-mahogany body. This time-tested tonewood is known for its rich tone as well as its gorgeous appearance. The beautiful dark red hue of mahogany ages wonderfully in both tone and color. A gorgeous walnut fingerboard complements the mahogany and is richly responsive and instantly playable. Forming chords, finding new voicings, and creating your own style is what this uke is all about.

From Kala: the uke company

Kala is all about ukulele. In fact, ukes are all they make, and they make them exceedingly well. Kala is in no small part responsible for the strong resurgence of interest in ukuleles since the mid-1990s. The company designs and manufactures over 120 different models made from a variety of woods, including lacewood, koa, mango, and many more, with each imparting its own sonic signature and aesthetic beauty to these popular and iconic instruments.

Kala Makala Classic Tenor Ukulele Features:

  • Affordable, quality-constructed tenor ukulele
  • All-mahogany body emits great tone and ages beautifully
  • Gorgeous walnut fingerboard is richly responsive and instantly playable
  • Satin finish accents the mahogany and protects the body
  • Geared tuners keep you in tune

So far so good
Only took a day to get and stay in tune. No excess glue, no blemishes at all really. Perfect action and frets are smooth. For the price the finish is phenomenal. Was a little worried but after getting it in person, I"m really impressed so far.
I"m mostly a bass player that dabbles in guitar, this uke was ready to go out of the box, maybe I just got lucky who knows. I usually always do tweaking to get my preferred action and to set intonation.
This uke is very mellow and sweet, if you want projection this one lacks a bit. If you want a sweet silky sound though this ones great. It sounds good but not great. Good enough to use seriously, though I feel it needs more bite. This is where solid wood vs cuts and laminates come into play but that then affects the price.
All in all though I recommend this as a well build starter uke.
As a bass player this tenor still feels dinky to me. I have medium sized hands so chords are no serious problem. So if you"ve got big hands I"d recommend you try the baritone version.

Pretty good
I didn't get to play it before buying it since I bought it online, but I have my own Kala Tenor ukulele to compare this Makala Tenor with. For the price, I think it's decent. I bought it as a gift for someone. I set to tuning it for 3 days before I gave it to the recipient. Three of the strings eventually stayed close to in tune, but the E string wasn't having any of it. I tried to tighten it, but it was pretty tight already. Anyway, I hope eventually it works itself out. The wood itself felt cheaper than I was expecting, but it is solid and the tone matches what it feels and looks like. No happy surprises, but it's exactly what you can expect for the price.
