The MD 421 Now in a Drumstick-proof Package

The Sennheiser MD 421 is to toms what the Royer 121 is to guitars — it’s been a staple for decades due to its amazing sound and dependability. The Sennheiser MD 421 Kompakt delivers the same performance, cardioid pickup pattern, remarkable dynamic range, and high SPL handling as the original but in an aptly named compact package that is much less intrusive. Perhaps best of all, Sweetwater studio engineers nearly jumped for joy to see that the MD 421 Kompakt features a newly designed integrated mic clip and the newly designed MZH drum microphone clip!

Legendary performance

Do you listen to music with drums? Then you’ve heard an MD 421. It’s considered the go-to microphone for rack and floor toms and has been in constant percussive employment for decades. Its 30Hz–17kHz frequency response and high SPL handling make it ubiquitous in professional and project studios. The Kompakt version delivers all of that plus a smaller profile that’s much less likely to be whacked by a wayward drumstick.

This is not a drill — new mic clips!

For all its wonderful features, the original MD 421’s mic clip left something to be desired. Sennheiser listened to the critiques and will deliver the MD 421 Kompakt with a newly designed integrated mic clip that is much more stable, secure, and safe. This package also includes the newly designed MZH drum microphone clip.

Sennheiser MD 421 Kompakt with MZH Drum Microphone Clip Features:

  • Iconic MD 421 performance in a streamlined profile
  • Exceptionally high SPL handles drums and other loud instruments with ease
  • Compact size means versatility for any studio or stage
  • Redesigned mic clip is securely affixed to the microphone itself for enhanced ease of use
  • Includes MZH drum microphone clip
  • Legendary Sennheiser build quality means it’s also ready for the road
What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Reviews

Really awesome
I like this Mic its really good!
Great Compact Tom Mic
Picked these up because of the smaller size and really liked the sound profile on my toms while doing a bunch of drum tracks, very easy to mount.
Only a few gigs down it has shown versatility and capability
I received this mic a few weeks ago and have used it with a few different PA systems and consoles on a number of instruments including, guitar cabs, floor toms, a horn, and even a kick drum. It performed well for all of these, though the kick lacked a little bottom end. It handled the high spl of the guitar and horn with a smooth response and good clarity. I will be purchasing a few more as my budget allows.

Got me back on track with the 421
I had given up on the 421; too expensive, sometimes hard to place on Toms under cymbals, horrible clip etc. But I did miss the 421. For me, it is a very classic Tom sound.

This is less expensive. Smaller and no more switch clip etc. it's doesn't sound like the md421ii. I think it sounds closer to the classic one but with more low mid warmth. Less hyped in the highs than the v2 which is good in this digital wold.

On the bad side is the drum clip. No I'm not talking about the shallow tread that everyone seems to have a problem with. But rather the length of the clip. Might be ok on a 8-10inch tom but on a floor, you're basically micing the rim edge only. I like my mic a little closer to the center. But no problem, I just use a mic stand.
Music background: Recording engineer since 1996
Sounds Good with a Flaw
As expected, the mic sounds like a 421 and at a great price. There, however, is a surprising engineering flaw. When attaching the drum clip, the screw on the clip barely reaches the socket. There is less than one thread of engagement (one turn) when it is tightened. This likely means that either the screw or the socket will strip with very little effort. This, of course, could be fixed by supplying a screw that is a couple threads longer. Very basic stuff and hard to believe it was missed.

From their studio-standard MD 421 II drum mic to their trusty headphones and ultra-reliable wireless systems, there are countless good reasons why the artists and engineers here at Sweetwater are quick to recommend Sennheiser products. In our personal studios, you'll find plenty of HD 280 Pro headphones, e609 Silver cab mics, and other staples, while many of us rely on EW wireless in-ear systems onstage. Our long association with Sennheiser means we constantly have their latest products in stock and in our hands, so we're ready to tell you all about them.
