How Do You Improve On a Classic Limiting Amp?

How do you improve on a classic? In the case of the MC77, Purple Audio began by re-creating the circuit schematic of the "E" revision of the most iconic solid-state limiting amplifier in history. Off to a great start, they then spec'd modern, high-performance components matched to the original, for a pristine all-discrete signal path. The MC77 matches the functionality and lightning-fast response time of the original, but goes further with sidechain and stereo linking functionality. Bottom line: the Purple Audio MC77 can be a major asset in your quest for better-sounding recordings.

Purple Audio MC77 Limiting Amplifier at a Glance:
  • What can the MC77 do for you?
  • Top-tier performance - and a huge value
What can the MC77 do for you?

Every studio needs a good limiter, and the Purple Audio MC77 is designed after the mother of all limiters. With its lightning-fast response time and pristine, all-discrete signal path, the MC77 is your go-to device for everything from subtle, transparent dynamics control to full-on brickwall limiting. It's fabulous on bass, kick drum, vocals, you name it. It's a must-have for punchy parallel processing on drums. The MC77 also sports a sidechain input and stereo linking - two conveniences the original didn't have.

Top-tier performance - and a huge value

At Sweetwater, we're all about performance and value, and that's what the MC77 gives you. Top-notch performance, in fact, and incredible value. At this price, you can double your value and get two. With a pair of these in your rack, you can make that stereo piano sit proud in a thick track. Punch up your toms. Strap 'em across your stereo buss for some mastering magic, and juice your mix with serious slam factor. The MC77's stereo linking makes it easy. The Purple Audio MC77. Do something nice for your studio.

Reviews

Classy and vintage. Perfection.
I've had my Mc77 for 3 years now and I don't think I will ever get rid of. I reallllllyyyyy want another one. I have daydreams of what these would do on a stereo drum bus.
This is by far the most used compressor I own. I run it on its own or into an La2a and both options sound and work great. I've used warm audio and that one is crap, I've used the real UA reissue and dare I say it also is lame. I've used vintage eurei and while they are cool, I can't justify that price, HOWEVER, Purple has just set the bar so high in terms of sound and build quality it's an absolute no Brainer.

Great sounding compressor
Great sounding 1176 compressor. And yes, I can compare, as I have an old original 1176 in my studio already. Don't hesitate the Purple Audio is the real deal at a more reasonable price!

As always - Great service from Bob Mondok Sweetwater!
Best I've had so far
I have tried the warm audio 76 clone the klark teknik the igs volfram and this purple. The purple adds something the others didn't I just use it on any vocals I do I like it there is a flavor too it. I would say that I use it in combination with an opto compressor most often. I Think it just brings a fullness and life I enjoy even when totally squashing things.
The best 1176 in the market
Get this instead of the UAD. It's better AND cheaper.

Can’t wait to get two of the best 1176 clones
Ok so I don"t have this yet but I"m gonna get two of them due to the fact that I just run Stereo or Dual mono tracks with eight analog inputs and outputs on my Avid MTRX which I need a review to write as well. Anyway back to the purple 77"s think about it if you have the budget then what would actually be the best option on the table? Limiting Amplifiers are to me anyway the funniest and most useful dynamic processors that I"ve come across I mean sure I have an API 2500 but frankly I"m lacking with dynamic processors. At the very least you should give purple 77"s a try
