Royer Works His Magic on a Condenser Mic!

David Royer is known worldwide for his modern ribbon microphone designs. But years before Royer Labs opened, David designed and built custom vacuum tube condenser microphones for Los Angeles engineers and recording studios. His early mics were used on many hit recordings — for engineers who know about them, they are highly prized possessions. David started a custom mic shop, Mojave Audio, and now Mojave has released the MA-200 tube condenser mic. And it's a beauty!

A modern condenser mic with classic characteristics

The MA-200 is the culmination of Royer's decades of experience in custom microphone design. The large-diaphragm MA-200 gives warm, full-bodied reproductions of vocals and instruments without the shrillness and high-frequency grunge so often encountered with modern condenser microphones.

Versatile studio performance on vocals and instruments

Try the MA-200 on lead and background vocals, voice-overs, piano, acoustic instruments, drum overheads, orchestra, and spot miking. You'll agree with the engineers who tested this mic that it evokes the characteristics of some of the best-loved vintage European microphones.

Precision construction with quality components

In a world of cookie-cutter imported mics, the MA-200 is a breath of fresh air. Using hand-selected 3-micron gold-sputtered capsules, Jensen audio transformers, and military-grade JAN 5840 vacuum tubes, Royer designed the MA-200 with an eye on premium performance.

Mojave Audio MA-200 Features:

  • Large-diaphragm tube condenser mic
  • Full, warm reproduction for vocals, piano, acoustic instruments, drum overheads, orchestra, and spot miking
  • Hand-selected 3-micron gold-sputtered capsule
  • Jensen audio transformers
  • Military-grade JAN 5840 vacuum tubes
  • Frequency response 30Hz-18kHz, +/-2.5dB
  • Carry case, power supply, shockmount, and cables included
What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Reviews

Depth and clarity
I'm a vocalist, singer/songwriter and prior to adding this mic into my line up, the Neuman TLM 103 was my workhorse. However, using these side by side, the texture, depth and clarity I get in tracking vocals with the 200 is very apparent against the TLM 103. My singing range is between a tenor and alto, and I've sung background for artist from Gospel to Rnb and Country. And before I forget, this thing made my acoustic sound so intimate with how it captured plucking and strumming. This is definitely my secret sauce for vocals and acoustics now.

At least as good as a U87, probably better
Directly comparing this to recordings I did with a Neumann U87, I like the Mojave more and it's just incredibly pleasing in every way. I don't know why I'd ever need to buy another vocal mic. This thing is a bargain for how good it is. Silky smooth, tons of high end but not too much either, great low end response, warm and clear. After spending a few years with an SM7B being my only mic, upgrading to this feels like heaven.

First step into the real microphone game
This was the first microphone I've purchased that's been over the $ mark and I have to say it blew my NTA out of the water. The clarity was incredible and instantly made my songs much better. I find it has a nice warm tone with plenty of detail in the higher end. I think the bonus is the case. Being able to store everything safely and compactly so it's always ready for a session is such a plus for me.

Beautifully Balanced Sound
I absolutely love my Mojave MA-200. Delivers smooth clean airy sound and of course the warmth of the tube component. I use it for production, narration, vocals, and some instrumentation... and it is a champ in all of those departments. With this acquisition I now own 10 microphones which include the Neumann TLM 103 and Lewitt LCT 440. This Mojave model is in my top 3 favorites. In addition to its great sound, it is also sturdy and aesthetically gorgeous. Consider this one for your sound locker. Even at around $ the Mojave MA-200 is a spectacular value. I would expect to pay more for a microphone of this caliber. This one is a keeper!
Nice sound!
I've been using this mic on vocals, amp cabs and acoutic guitars! This out performs and sounds better than my Shure Condensors, older EV and AT mics. Just what I needed! My Sales Engineer, Jed, is TOP NOTCH!!
