Good mid-range drum

I have a set of these. I also have a three-piece Aspire set. If you are starting out and are choosing between Aspire and Matador, I would recommend the Matadors. Here's why:

The Aspires have two-ply staves, whereas the Matador has three ply. If you accidentally drop a drum and create a hairline crack, the extra ply can prevent the crack from penetrating the shell.

The Matador hardware is slightly better. They have a longer type of lug nut, which is easier to hit with the wrench than a shorter nut, plus the greater length and burled texture make finger tightening a little easier. Also, they include the bumper-style washers, which can reduce the likelihood of damage when one drum hits another. In addition, it also has a carrying handle.

The mounts are broad and are designed for stands that require washers and wingnuts. This can be very fiddly and you might end up having to crawl around looking for them if you drop one, plus the stands have a center hole just large enough for the wingnut to fall into, requiring you to pull apart the stand to retrieve it. The curved mounting plate with the two bolt holes theoretically prevent the drum from twisting when you are playing hard but as the stands have curved adjustable spacers, they won't twist anyway. If you wish you can swap them for LP slide mounts, which are waaay easier and are compatible with the more economical Aspire stands as well as the LP triple conga stand.

The drums are also larger (and heavier), which provides a lower bass tone, plus the larger diameter makes for a tighter skin at the same pitch as Aspires, which makes slaps easier. They also come in industry standard sizes, making it easy to swap for higher-end premounted heads in various types and thicknesses. (The factory heads are pretty good and replacements are half the price of aftermarket cowhide and muleskin.)

If you are considering Aspires, don't let the snobs dissuade you, but if you are serious about congas it is worthwhile to spend more and get the Matadors (how much is your guitar guy paying for his rig? Three times more?). The Matadors retain much of their ROI and they sound great. Besides, you can always add an Aspire 10" as a requinto for a matched-finish four-drum set.
