About Congas

What do Desi Arnaz, Tito Puente, and Giovanni Hidalgo have in common? Apart from being untouchable percussion icons, these legends all shared a love for the congas. The congas — barrel-shaped paragons of hand percussion that they are — have become a vital part of countless funk, Latin, and Afro-Cuban standards, including “Long Train Runnin’,” “Oye Como Va,” and “Periódico de Ayer." If you’ve been searching for ways to spice up your percussion playing with authentic world-percussion rhythms, then the congas are fun to learn and have a sound that stands apart onstage.

Shop for Congas by Brand

Where would music be without the infectious rhythms of the conga, quinto, and tumba? These drums have been responsible for more bodies hitting dance floors than perhaps any instrument in history. If you’re searching for your favorite brand of congas at Sweetwater, then here’s a tip: use the filters on this page to narrow down your results to Latin Percussion (LP) congas, Meinl congas, Pearl congas, Toca congas, and more!

Conga FAQs

How do you play the congas?

Conga drums are played with the fingers, palms, and heels of the hands, typically in a tumbao or marcha pattern. Kevin Zahner from Rhythm Notes has a great video for beginning percussionists titled 5 Conga Patterns Every Drummer Should Know that will get you started with the rudiments of conga playing.

How do you tune the congas?

Unlike the tuning of timpani and other pitched percussion, congas are typically tuned by ear. The best method we can recommend is to play the drum and decide what’s lacking. A pure pitch? A defined slap? A bellowing heel tone? Once you have a goal defined, then you can experiment by dropping or raising the pitch a quarter turn at a time at each lug. Whichever way you tune, just be sure to keep equal tension on the conga head by using a star-shaped tuning method. Also, be advised that many congas on the market will include a wrench that is sized for their particular shells, although not all do. If in doubt, then give your friends at Sweetwater a call.

How do you mic congas?

Miking congas for the stage and studio can be a little tricky. Fortunately, microphone mounts today like Latin Percussion LP592A-X and Mic Holders MHC have made getting a pro sound easy to repeat in most environments.

As for the microphones themselves, we suggest an Audix D2 Trio placed a few inches above the heads with the possible addition of a D4 or D6 to extract the deepest lows from your conga/tumba. For studio recording, a stereo pair of AKG C414s or Neumann TLM 102s can capture the full tone and body of the shells. Of course, as with most sources, you can’t go wrong with the trusty SM57!
