Reviews

Unbelievable All-in-One Solution
I was previously using a Zoom H5 Handy Recorder with various capsules on it. It was definitely a nice recorder, and the onboard compression and limiter features were nice to help control levels a bit. But when social media served me up an ad for the H4, I was really interested. No real reviews yet, as the thing is so new, but I was happy enough with my previous Zoom products, so I decided to give it a shot. I bought this and the M3 Shotgun Recorder. Both of them exceeded my wildest expectations.

This thing is an absolute BEAST. The glossy finish truly does reduce handling noise compared to the matte finish on the H5. But the truly amazing feature is the 32-bit recording. It's not hype, it's not a gimmick, it is an ABSOLUTE GAME CHANGER. Not having to worry about levels is insanely helpful. I always do significant post-processing anyway (why wouldn't you?) so the potentially quieter base recording is meaningless. What's meaningful is the ridiculous noise floor on this thing. No hiss whatsoever. It's like using a perfect noise gate ... without gating anything. And the ability to plug in additional sources is massive.

Regarding handling, I was a bit worried about the square-ish form factor, and originally considered the M2 instead, with its more traditional conical cylinder grip. But I went for the H4 for its additional connectivity, and am very happy with the decision. The ergonomics are actually great, no worries there. Plus the 1/4" mount on the back will be very handy for using it on a boom, etc.

The onboard stereo pair gives a very nice signal, but you want to be right on top of it. Shove it right up in their faces. Even a couple feet away and things drop off significantly. This is actually a big plus for an interview mic. Just don't be shy with it.

For the price, this thing is worth every penny.
Exceptional!
Got this unit a few days ago and have been running through it's paces. It's primary purpose for me is to record samples and interviews to be used with video productions. I have a number of field recorders to compare to. Some have internal mics and some do not. A few are are handheld units.

Handling noise is minimal and the least of all my hand held recorders. Very similar to standard mic handling.

Noise floor is very low as tested in a very quite room, 42db-c per sound level meter. Internal mics and external mics are both very quiet. Tested against an Oktava 319 Via a Presonus Studiolive 16:4:2 AI with very close noise floor. Internal mic coloration very acceptable and easily manipulated in Cubase Pro. 20 - 30 db preamplification is possible in DAW without artifacts.

Jam synchronization using Tentacle sync units is perfect in Davinci Resolve studio. It is notable that cycling the power on the unit will loose the synchronization not unlike numerous cameras.

Included pop filter is adequate for speech at close proximity. I purchased a 3rd party "dead cat" for wind control.

Menu has a very short learning curve and as per previous reviews did require downloading the full manual for me.

This is my first native 32 bit recorder and the dynamic range is astounding. From super quiet to very loud input volume. I'm quite sure George Lucas would not consider this unit for a Star Wars production but I would not be a bit surprised to see it on set for Parker's Trails.

I am quite satisfied with the build quality of the unit. It's not going to withstand the abuse that a Mackie mixer can but I would not want to pay the premium for a build that would.

I've read some disappoint regarding the mini sd card. There is no need to ever remove the sd card for me. The process of accessing the card via the USB C port on the unit is very simple and not extremely slow.

Obviously, I haven't tested every facility available on the unit and may never. For my needs this device will be a staple.

Phenomenal!
Wow this is an incredible release by Zoom that people are sleeping on! I couldn't believe the feature set but when I tried it I realised how good of an alternative to Tascam it was. The preamps sound banging and the whole design of looking like a mic actually works on stages where techies tend to disregard anything that doesn't look "serious".
32 bit is no joke- you literally don't need to do anything except turn it on and record whatever it is.
The RF interference issue was only on SOME units- the rest of the units are all fine because I A/B'ed against friends' units.
Here's the thing- if you look at the new release by Teenage Engineering- the thing is beset with issues right out of the box- Zoom had a bad launch but that happened to Teenage Engineering too…
Zoom M4 is a 10/10.
Recording Studio in a Laptop Bag
That's 32 bit recording, directly to the Zoom M4 MicTrak. So it independently captures the 32 bit WAV file, which you can transfer to any DAW such as GarageBand or Logic Pro. I use Logic Pro for stem separation of one-take recordings of voice, guitar, percussion, and keyboards. Great for quick high quality demos using minimal equipment. In short, your mobile studio now fits in a small laptop bag, MacBook Air + Zoom MicTrak.

Very practical, great value for money
Easy to use, excellent audio quality, versatility, the 32 floating bits are essential to not miss a take, since you will never have very low or very high sounds that you cannot use, the only criticism is that it seems fragile, I do not recommend dropping it.
