A Meticulous Reproduction of the De Facto Dynamics Processor

It’s no small feat attempting to faithfully replicate the piece of gear most responsible for the vocal sound of the last 60 years, but Sweetwater studio professionals are pleased to announce that the talented folks at Lindell Audio have managed to do it! The Lindell Audio LiN2A Vintage Leveling Amplifier ticks all the boxes: a USA-made transformer, true tube-driven optical compression/limiting, ultra-fast attack and level-dependent release, vintage-style VU for monitoring, and more. Perhaps best of all, it's much less expensive than maintaining a vintage unit! Putting the hit sound of the last 60 years right in your own studio has never been easier.

A unique style of compression

Normally, you might have to play around for a while to get the sound you're looking for with many compressor/limiters; however, it actually takes effort to not make the LiN2A sound good! That’s because the LiN2A (and all true ‘2A-style compression/limiting) doesn’t use the typical ratio, attack, and release controls that are found on most other types of compressors/limiters. Instead, what you’ll find on the Lindell Audio LiN2A is a simple 2-knob interface for quick, effortless, and excellent results. The LiN2A features a great Compress mode (≈3:1) and an equally awesome hard Limiter (∞:1) mode. And although vocals sound particularly magical through the LiN2A, bass and kick tracks will benefit from it as well.

The Black Lion T4BLA Opto Element

At the heart of the LiN2A is the superb Black Lion T4BLA Opto Element. This little beauty delivers smooth gain reduction and transparent leveling, ensuring that you and/or your clients always have musical, intelligible vocal takes. Each individual T4BLA unit also has incredible consistency with regards to its construction, so if you ever decide to hook up multiple LiN2A units together, they will work together in perfect harmony.

Lindell Audio LiN2A Vintage Leveling Amplifier Features:

  • True tube-driven optical compression and limiting
  • Superb Black Lion T4BLA Opto Element for smooth gain reduction and transparency
  • 2 USA-made Cinemag transformers
  • Quick, effortless 2-knob user interface for instant results
  • Dynamically responsive Compress mode (≈3:1) and hard Limiter (∞:1) mode
  • Ultra-fast attack and level-dependent release
  • Vintage-style VU for monitoring
  • Balanced input and output

Reviews

I’m pissed
This thing is a beast , it sounds close to the LA2A original..But I sold it Like a dummy :( because I needed extra cash and I felt like it sounded big but needed more character..So I been using the Golden age 3A, & that's my baby..SO recently I went back to record a song I didn't finish , and it needed a verse and it had all the recordings with the Lin2A and when I mixed everything, the verse with GA3A is lacking depth and 3D bignesssss and everything is the same except for the Lin2A , SOOOOO now I gotta buy the Lin2A again for Christmas

Pretty decent for the price
These units are gorgeous! I purchased a pair to have two channels stereo for a mix-bus. Lindell has done a great job recreating one of the best optical compressors to ever exist. These are however, affordable, which is great! But it means sacrificing *some* quality. I noticed that the noise floor was a little high. I replaced the stock tubes with the Gold Lion tubes which made a larger difference than I expected. These sound incredible with the new tubes!

I'm currently running these with a pair of Lindell's Pultec-style Lintec models. Altogether, I have a solid and versatile setup for my mix bus, or for tracking individual mics or instruments on the way in to my DAW.

A great compressor for vocals!
I was trying to get a compressor like the LA-2A and I started to do some research about the different clones available and I did see a YouTube video where different clone models where compared to an original LA-2A. On that video I was able to see how this unit reacted the same way as the original but with its own sound and character, it's when I decided to give it a shot in my studio. I got the unit and I have to say that it feels very high quality, the frame is strong and the switches are sturdy. The pots are stepped and which is the beast for recalling purposes and they also fell sturdy. I did try it with different sources with great results on bass and drums, however, on vocals it's a beast! The unit has transformers and it's way faster that the original tube design which offers a faster attack which is great for vocals. I use it in series with a FET compressor. They work great together, so any if the two works to hard given me a transparent compression with added harmonics and character. I love this unit!
Music background: Pianist, composer and music producer.
A dream on vocals
This is the best bang-for-the buck compressor I've ever used. When I dial it in just right I get the kind of "transparent" smoothening I've been looking for... I use it on all my vocal tracks now. It doesn't make the vocal sound squashed, and at the right settings the compression isn't even obvious... but when I set it to bypass I REALLY miss it!
Amazing!
I put this amazing machine on my bass tracks, and it has changed the game. Wish I had about 10 more of these LiN2A's.
