Legacy 800: The Next Generation of GK Bass Tone

The Gallien-Krueger Legacy 800 is an 800-watt compact, lightweight bass amp head with a Class D switch-mode power amp and analog preamp with overdrive. The Legacy series represents a half-century of industry-leading innovation at Gallien-Krueger. With its signature growl, clarity, power, and features that were ahead of its time, the 800RB, launched in 1980, established Gallien-Krueger as an industry leader in solid-state bass amplification. GK's Legacy series heads conjure the same no-nonsense aesthetic while delivering cutting-edge sound and features for today's bassists. From clear, biting cleans to fat, punchy overdrive, the Legacy series can do it all. Packing 800 watts of Class D power and smart, flexible features, the Legacy 800 is gig-ready for studio sessions and live venues of any size.

Quickly nail the tone you need for any gig

Legions of bass players at Sweetwater trust Gallien-Krueger to deliver the tone, gig after gig. That's why GK designed its Legacy series bass heads with a flexible, smart feature set to help you ace any live show or recording session. Sculpt your tone to perfection with Gallien-Krueger's classic 4-band EQ. Quickly audition versatile voicing filters — Bump, Contour, and Presence — to zero in fast on the perfect sound for any music genre. Kick in saturation with onboard Overdrive, and dial in Edge tone-shaping to taste. Whether you're playing prog metal or country, the GK Legacy 800 fits the bill.

All the right connections

On the Legacy 800's rear-panel Patch Bay, use the effects loop Send and Return to connect your favorite compressor or other outboard gear. Landed an arena gig? Use the balanced DI output to send a post-EQ signal to the PA. In the studio, switch the DI to pre-EQ and connect directly to the recording console. From coffeehouse gigs to stadiums, the Gallien-Krueger Legacy 800 has you covered with flexible load capacity cabinet impedance switching that delivers optimum power into 2-, 2.7-, 4-, and 8-ohms loads. Practicing quietly at home? The GK Legacy 800 also features Aux input and Headphone jacks.

A gig-ready, tour-tough head

To improve performance and reliability, GK's Legacy series uses an innovative interconnection system that eliminates issues that can develop over time due to the frequent vibration and temperature extremes that gear is subjected to with demanding professional use. Legacy series circuit boards use gold-plated connections instead of standard cables with tin connectors. This type of robust construction delivers a purer sound in addition to the enhanced reliability to withstand years of heavy touring.

Reviews

Could use some improvements...
Sounds great honestly, plenty of power... my band plays 3 out 4 weekends a month so only time will tell about its longevity, but out of the box, sounds great.

My experience thus far:

Foot switch is junk... sorry... it was extremely difficult just to get the cord inserted. Then there is the "engaging it does absolutely nothing" part. I mean nothing... crickets... Looks like the Musk cyber brats may have built it... COBOL was not required.

Mute switch is also a bit lame... when toggled the click is audible, when loud, toggle is loud, sadly it needs to announce it has been engaged and/or disengaged (yes, both directions are audible, click, click). I mean your club sound engineer will have conniption if you toggled it whilst plugged into their gear.

I did pick up the rack ears for it... and it fits nicely into my rack, but sadly the power switch is the back... so very annoying, my old SVT-7 had me spoiled I guess.

Stand by light is a bit odd, stays lit when amp is powered off... honestly it comes on immediately when I fire up the Furman. So... I guess it is to indicate "hey... I have power, you can turn me on now"...
Clean sound
GK Legacy 800 is the perfect move from the older RB heads. I have a 700RB and a 2001RB and the Legacy 800 has enough power and it has a great clean sound with punch and the GK growl. The trim knob is a great switch from active/passive button. It really helps dial in the sound perfect without clipping. The distortion is ok but does add some dirt but overall a solid bass head.
Powerful and beyond
I have had the Legacy 800 2x12 Combo for over a year now and that thing is a beast! I recently bought a 2x12 Neo cab to use with the Legacy Combo for big venues and I thought why not have a setup for gigs and in my studio. I just purchased the Legacy 800 head and just as I thought, that too is an absolute beast as well! Like another bass player mentioned, I have also had various different amps in my day, Peavey, Ampeg, Acoustic and Mesa and none of those hold it down like these GK amps! Tons of power and loads of clarity.

Everything that I have bought new for the past 12 years I have bought from Sweetwater. I have dealt with the same tech engineer Roq Martin for all those years and I am very happy to share with you, he is the best! Never an issue and a total gentleman! I hold Roq and Sweetwater in the highest esteem and I will always continue to do business with Roq.

GK gets it
My preference in bass amps runs to clean, uncolored output to whatever cabs I am using. This amp has power to spare, can run unmatched ohm loads without breaking a sweat AND is lighter than most. Set it and forget it EQ, and it can cover all genres of music. This one, and the Legacy 500 are my gigging amps. No issues at all.

Awesome Sound
The sound was exactly what I was looking for. Running through a 4-10" cabinet, it gave me the punch and presence I needed to complete the sound I wanted. Excellent service from Sweetwater as usual!!
