Hear the Truth

The LYD 5 is the bantamweight entry in Dynaudio's LYD line of active nearfield reference monitors, which makes it perfect for small control rooms as well as home hi-fi applications. The technology employed in the LYD series is distilled from Dynaudio's extensive experience in designing and manufacturing the no-compromise main monitors used in top studios worldwide. The foundation of the LYD 5's outstanding overall performance is its tight, accurate low-frequency reproduction. You rely on your monitors to reveal the truth about what you're recording. Does the lead vocal sit right in your mix? Is there too much bass? Not enough? Free of distortion, coloration, and phase issues that can cloud your judgment, the LYD 5 lets you know exactly what's going on with your tracks, mixes, and masters. With the Dynaudio LYD 5, you'll make better recordings.

Superior technology for unerring accuracy

Dynaudio poured their considerable engineering expertise into their LYD series nearfield monitors. Accurate driver control is achieved through a custom ferrite magnet system. For superior linearity, the magnet is surrounded by a large-diameter voice coil. A low-mass aluminum voice coil is used for quick, precise transient response. To ensure the ideal balance between weight, stiffness, and dampening, Dynaudio molds the diaphragm and dust cap in one piece with their proprietary magnesium silicate polymer. The result is a monitor that lives up to the Danish tradition of excellence in speaker design.

Dynaudio knows what they're doing

At Sweetwater, Dynaudio commands respect. With over three decades of experience building speaker drivers, the Danish company knows what goes into a great monitor speaker. Add to that 20-plus years of producing professional monitors for top studios, and you have a company perspective that few pro-audio manufacturers can match. Dynaudio's proprietary driver technologies produce monitors that are neutral and uncolored. This silky clarity, in combination with amazing dynamic capabilities, delivers monitors that let you work marathon sessions without ear fatigue — all while producing superior-sounding results.

If you have money to spend on new monitors....

Purchased these as an upgrade from a pair of Kali LP-6's and IK Multimedia iLoud Micro Monitors. The Kali's always sounded a bit off to me, could be just the way I had them setup as they get great reviews, or maybe I just didn't care for the sound, not sure. The iLoud's are great for what they are and I'll continue to use them as a second set and for travel.

I did a lot of research as there are a ton of products in this size and price range, the other ones I seriously considered were Neumann KH 120's. I ultimately went with Dynaudio based on their reputation and the fact that they just make monitors (I like brands that do one thing and one thing well). These monitors seemed to be the best value at this price point, and I'm very happy with my choice.

Upon unboxing, it's very apparent that these are well made, solid monitors. Setup was a breeze and they have a small footprint that's perfect for my humble home studio. Positioning was also a breeze and dialing in the sound using the built-in filters was simple. These do lack some of the heft that I was used to with the Kali's (which were slightly bigger), but I quickly got used to the sound.

I find that these have a very flattering sound, Hi-Fi but not harsh, and they're really pleasant to listen to whether I'm creating, mixing or just listening for pleasure. I think you'd definitely need a sub if you're mixing or listening to music with heavy low-end, but otherwise I don't find that I'm missing anything much.

I will mention that there is a review here talking about the self-noise of these being an issue, and that's not the case at all for me. These are dead quiet, even when I have them cranked. Another cool feature is the standby mode which I didn't think I'd like but it's great.

Finally, if you have budgeted a good amount of money to spend on new monitors, these should be at the top of your list, if not your first choice. You could certainly do a lot worse with your money, but I don't know that you could do much better.

My New Favorite Nearfield Studio Monitors

I've been mixing music for over 30 years and selected the LYD 5 as the primary monitoring system for my home studio - I couldn't be happier with that decision. They are punchy and detailed without being harsh, minimizing listening fatigue during long sessions. If a mix sounds great on the LYD 5, it sounds great on other systems as well (exactly what you want from a studio monitor). It has very accurate bass response but a 5" woofer has obvious physical limitations in its ability to reproduce sub-bass. To address this, I added a studio-grade subwoofer that I switch in/out when I need to focus on extreme low-end frequencies in a mix.

Great clarity for mixing.

I'm mixing rock and metal, I have noticed problem frequencies I had never heard before. These speakers have a clarity and flat response I was looking for. And if you are in a small room and wondering if you need the 7 or 8, you probably don't, the LYD 5 has more than enough low end for rock music. Other genres with tons of low end you may want to go up a size.

Gotta take a listen

My "B" set of studio monitors has been the JBL LSR305 for quite some time here at Piano Haven Studio. Ready for an upgrade, I shopped hard for a set of 5" monitors around the $1k/pair price. These are worth every penny of the upgrade and are giving my "A" set a run for the money. We record exclusively piano based music on a handmade $100k Shigeru Kawai concert grand. These speakers reveal every detail and harmonic, and sound much larger than their VERY compact size. Flawless imaging, and tight/present bass. Love dialing in the reverb on these monitors. The room controls are appreciated, but with everything flat it sounds most accurate to me. Dynaudio hit a homer with these little powerhouses. Lay your ears on them!

Stellar Value & Admirable Quality

I've had these for about a week now. I wanted to write a review because there isn't much written about these out there and after using them for a week, I'm very impressed and believe these are underrated/deserve more attention.

Now, I've owned Adam S Series nearfields and Barefoot Sound nearfields prior to these. I also work in a recording studio that has a sound system that costs as much as a new car. The point is, I'm accustomed to working with expensive and high-end monitors.

I bought these because I was looking for a decent pair of monitors to work on at home. I was initially looking at the Adam AX lineup but, decided to try these out because I've heard good things about how these sound, and I wanted to try something different.

After listening to them for a week and hearing them break-in, I'm impressed. These to me are superior to the Adam AX series in just about every way. The midrange and top-end are detailed without being overbearing and there's just an overall smoothness to them. The transients come through clearly and the overall balance sounds natural/believable. There's no funny business here. Just quality sound that you can be confident in.

Honestly, when I think about how accurate and confident these sound I'm just blown away. While the AX monitors are great as well, I would pick these again over the ADAMs. Having owned the S series and worked on the AX series, the LYD 5s have the same tightness and detail without the annoying brittleness/rough edgy quality from the ADAMs.

Finally, these look fantastic. In a dim lit room the edges on the faceplate blend effortlessly into the body and the woofers somewhat reflect colorful lights nicely as well. Definitely catch myself looking at these and admiring them more often than not (something I can't say about either the Barefoots or the Adams).

Now, being the smallest of the batch, these do not have an inspiring low end that makes you want to dance. While what it does reproduce is clean and punchy, it doesn't have the fullness of the Barefoots. I purchased an Adam T10s Subwoofer to address this and have it dialed in about 6dB quieter than the LYD 5s. This helps open up the LYD 5s a little bit and extends their low-end in a believable way. If you can afford it, definitely get a subwoofer with these. My settings are conservative but even just the little bit of help from the sub adds an awesome space and dimension the system as a whole, while the LYD 5s take care of business in the mid-high end.

I would give these 5 stars if the hiss while idle/not playing audio was a little less noticeable. By no means is it a deal-breaker but it would be great if it was a little less present. Really, I'm nitpicking here and it could just be that I'm very close to my monitors and my room is really quiet.
