Monitoring to a Higher Standard

The Dynaudio LYD 48 will take your monitoring accuracy — and your mixes — to a higher level of professionalism. As the new flagship of the LYD range, the LYD 48 builds upon the strengths of its 2-way stablemates, and as a 3-way tri-amplified studio monitor, it achieves superior across-the-board performance. In a 2-way design, the woofer has to work very hard to reproduce the low frequencies as well as a portion of the midrange. Another inherent disadvantage is that the crossover to the tweeter is taking place within that all-important midrange — where the vocal tracks are most vibrant, where your guitars have girth and body, and generally where mixes either shine or fall flat. Having a dedicated midrange driver (and amp) delivers sweeping benefits, including solid bass extension, improved midrange purity, lower distortion, higher SPL capability, and overall accuracy. Suitable for both nearfield and midfield applications, the value-packed Dynaudio LYD 48 will help you make better recordings.

The benefits of 3-way monitoring

If you've never worked on 3-way monitors before, you're in for a treat: increased accuracy, extended frequency response, optimized sound staging, and more. Having three dedicated drivers to handle the lows, mids, and highs; and crossover points that avoid the critical midrange frequencies; the Dynaudio LYD 48 is able to provide astonishing clarity across the frequency spectrum — and particularly in the critical midrange, an area that is often compromised by the existence of a crossover point in 2-way monitor designs. It also means that the 8" woofer, freed from the burden of midrange duties, can do what it does best: deliver beefy, extended bass response. Likewise, the tweeter can concentrate on serving up silky, extended highs. Having the most important part of the frequency spectrum — the midrange — reproduced by a separate driver gives the Dynaudio LYD 48 an incredibly neutral midrange response that's critical for proper placement of lead vocals and solo instruments in your mix.

Dynaudio knows what they're doing

At Sweetwater, Dynaudio commands respect. With over three decades of experience building speaker drivers, the Danish company knows what goes into a great monitor speaker. Add to that 20-plus years of producing professional monitors for top studios, and you have a company perspective that few pro audio manufacturers can match. Dynaudio's proprietary driver technologies produce monitors that are neutral and uncolored. This silky clarity, in combination with amazing dynamic capabilities, deliver monitors that let you work marathon sessions without ear fatigue — all while producing superior-sounding results.

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

TEN STARS AND 2 THUMBS UP!

These are absolutely incredible. I could stop there, but I will give you some background on this for those who may have a similar situation. I have been a guitarist for a very long time. I have repeatedly recorded in some really impressive studios and try to bring those experiences and knowledge to my part time project studio, but I write and record far more during a year than I mix or master music. When I decided that new monitors were much more of necessity than another great Les Paul, I did a lot of research. I had battled my old monitors for a long time and I had big flaws in my mixes when I played them in different vehicles. I gave up on some music that I couldn't make sound right. It was too much work to make music. It took too much time. It wasn't the fun that it's supposed to be. It was destroying my inspiration. If I was going to get new monitors, I wanted to escape that and not just have a slight improvement. All of the monitor manufacturers really seem to dedicate themselves to impressing the end user, so there was a lot to consider.

I knew of Dynaudio from great reviews that home studio - Dynaudio owners that I knew personally told me.... for decades. The mixes that they achieved were impressive. THAT is an important clue. The reputation was there. There was always a steady, positive buzz about Dynaudio and I now know that it is well deserved.
I didn't decide on these at first. I was looking at other options that were a bit less expensive, but the Dynaudio reputation and the 3 way speaker option, combined with what was a 36 month finance offer from Sweetwater at the time really had me considering these higher end monitors. When I mentioned them to my Sweetwater sales engineer, he said that he was also very impressed with them.

They sound the way that I, as a Rock guitarist want to hear mixes, especially when I am the one doing the mixing and when it's my music and I know what I want it to sound like. I knew what I personally needed to hear if I was the guy in the mixing chair. I want to hear more mids and definition accurately. Dynaudio has those characteristics, while these LYD48s also have plenty of low end available, far more than I will ever need.

I ordered them from Sweetwater of course & they arrived about a year ago. I waited to review them because I was mostly tracking on about 2 weekends a month, not mixing, but I could tell immediately that these were something special since day one. Now that I am mixing, I have to say that these are incredibly accurate with tons of definition.
Getting back into mixing, my first few mixes were a bit of a disappointment because of bad habits of starting a mix with a bunch of plugins on tracks that I put there when I was tracking to hear where things were going and due to ear fatigue from mixing a little louder than necessary. I had also put those early mixes together with tracking headphones as I tracked.
Now I only mix on the LYD 48s and when I put the headphones on, the mix is equally right and far better than anything that I ever achieved before with headphones or monitors and I am easily achieving mixes, especially in the last few days that sound just as great on the headphones or in vehicles. If you're mixing correctly, the LYD48s let you know and if you're mixing incorrectly, the LYD48s will let you know.
The reason that the last few days have been so great is because I have been rediscovering useful plugins, what they are capable of and how dramatic small parameter changes need to be to achieve what I am going for. They are much better plugins than I realized before. I just couldn't hear that before I used these monitors. I was pleasantly surprised time after time when trying plugins again after having them for years!

The LYD48 monitors reveal everything that you need to hear even at low volume, so it allows me much more time to work on a mix before I need to take a break to overcome ear fatigue. Once I began to start the mixes from scratch with no plugins, things improved rapidly. Using reference music, I followed a tried and true formula of comparing instrument placement and then starting to build the sounds, EQs, effects etc. from there, but while the mixes were much better, they still had some issues, primarily with bass being louder in vehicles than on my monitors. That was a simple fix. I just had to adjust the bass setting on the monitors and POW, fantastic translation between the monitors and vehicles. I hear the same mix when I am driving as when I am mixing. I have some acoustic treatment in the room also, but I can say that these translate very well and putting these monitors on the Primacoustics RX9 isolation pads was a great move too to tighten up and clarify what the bass is doing. If you don't hear it right then you're going to mix it wrong!

When you first get these, there is a 20 hour break in period. Play your favorite music and get to know them. What you will hear is far more detail than you're likely used to. They are crisp and bright at first, but some of that settles down Once I got my settings correct, if I am hearing things too bright in my mix, that is what I will hear in a car or truck. It's accurate. Mixing at low volume, the high end detail, mid detail and low end definition are all very obvious and I don't need to mix loudly to hear what's happening …. and low volume is much better for the ears and perception.
The slightest adjustment is very noticeable when using plugins. I have had great experiences mixing on these. I am very impressed. If I have several plugins on a track, I sometimes choose to shut one or two off. In Sonar Platinum, they become dark in the effects bin. It's not just bypass, but the plugin is off and I can still hear the difference between if that plugin is deleted or left there. Sometimes I delete it, but sometimes I hear something good going on there and leave the plugin in the bin, but off. I now hear the little details like that.

Just as most acoustic guitar reviews talk about feel and tone and not many detail whether the action is good enough to easily play intricate parts in standard tuning or just good enough to play open chords on, a lot of monitor reviews talk about tone and about how great music sounds on them, but most reviews comment much less about translation and that is what it's all about. Isn't it? That's what we all really need to know! My experience in this room with the settings I now have set on the monitors is that they translate incredibly well. Very accurate. I have never second guessed this purchase. Things have consistently become much better using them. I am now a loyal Dynaudio user just like I am a loyal Sweetwater customer, so thanks to both for doing what they do the way that they do it.

Very good experience

I have moved from Focal 65 (old model) to these speakers. I couldn't go back, it really sound like a studio. I am not an expert, these are the cons for these ones.
1. I can hear the "punch" in low volume, that's a new concept for me:)
2. Moving away from the "sweet spot" does make me lose frequencies the same way I have experience with vocals (the cheap ones) , tannoy gold and some Behringer speakers. I can still hear the music properly.
3. The volume....these are beasts.
Definitely, I am happy I bought those.

Excellent, continued

These are sold individually, so I originally did a review of the left side, and thought I could add a little more info, here.

I've done some engineering, and a little bit of producing. However, I am mostly a musician/songwriter. That being said, over the years, I have worked in some top notch studios. Many of them had the best monitors that money can buy.

I have to admit, I like these monitors as much as any that I have ever used, regardless of price. In fact I like them better than most.

Dynaudio monitors always get excellent reviews. I'm not surprised. These people obviously know what they are doing.

Why did I buy these? I have always preferred three way monitors. The problem is that they tend to be much more expensive. When I first saw these, I read the description, and saw the price.I thought they were to good to be true. However, because of the reputation of Dynaudio, I took a closer look. Everyone that I knew who had heard these, all quickly recommended them.

Having used them for several weeks, I can comfortably say that the information provided by Dynaudio, is very accurate. For example, the bass is incredible. It is extremely accurate. Likewise, the mids and high are exactly what they should be. The stereo imaging is incredible. They are crystal clear.

Also, there are some added benefits to these monitors. At this time, the room that I am going to be using for my studio, is not yet finished. I currently have these sitting in my living room, up against a wall, on make shift stands. They still sound great. I just had to change the settings on the back. This was very easy to do, and only took a few minutes.

One of the things that I had heard about these, is that they sound great, even at lower volume levels. This is absolutely true. These are great for mixing, at any volume level.Plus they are great as near field or mid field.

Absolutely five stars.

Great monitors!
