The Les Paul Special: Ready for Duty

What began as an intermediate-level instrument in the 1950s has since evolved into a staple in Gibson's lineup of classic guitars. The Les Paul Special pays homage to its more traditional counterparts in both style and function while offering a distinct, performance-driven character of its own. The slimmer, lightweight mahogany body, paired with a '50s-style mahogany neck shape, allows for hours of comfortable playing without back pain and provides an authentic fretting experience. Like the original Les Paul Specials from the original era, this iteration features P-90 pickups equipped with Orange Drop capacitors, delivering a wide range of sonic textures that cater to multiple music genres. To top it all off, a traditional nitrocellulose finish enhances the Gibson experience, with a factory-fresh lacquer that allows the Les Paul Special to breathe and resonate naturally. Over time, this finish will fade, just like the legendary Gibson instruments of the past.

Lightweight mahogany body

Originally released in 1955 as a lighter alternative to the back-breaking Les Paul Standard, the solid-mahogany Gibson Les Paul Special has given players a tone, response, and comfort all its own. Today’s Les Paul Special packs all the appeal of the timeless design in a great-playing and well-equipped modern form.

Nitro lacquer finish

Like the original, this Les Paul Special comes finished in a lightweight nitrocellulose lacquer. Nitro finishes are significantly thinner than modern polyurethane finishes. Not only is this approach period-correct, but some also suggest that this allows the guitar to “breathe” for improved sonics and, over time, to take on the look of a lovingly cared-for classic.

P-90 pickups with Orange Drop caps

If you consider yourself among the ranks of the many fiercely loyal P-90 fans, as so many of us here at Sweetwater do, you already know the unique tonal palette this pickup pairing brings to the iconic Les Paul Special. It’s an amazingly versatile sound with its own brand of grit — a bit brighter, leaner, and less refined than a humbucker, though almost as hot. Hit your amp hard, and the Les Paul Special’s P-90s really wail. Plugged into a proper tube amp, you can elicit grind, sizzle, and bark that would be impossible to achieve with other more common pickup types. Handwired controls complete with classic-era Orange Drop capacitors round out the GIbson Les Paul Special’s choice electronics.

Gibson Les Paul Special Features:

  • Slim, classic Les Paul body shape that sits comfortably in your lap or with a strap
  • Mahogany body and neck set the standard for a warm, harmonically-rich sonic profile
  • Period-correct ’50s-style mahogany neck brings authenticity to a vintage Les Paul feel
  • Rosewood fingerboard with medium-jumbo frets provides a slick playing experience
  • 2 P-90 pickups deliver a blend of piercing highs and grit not found in other styles of pickups
  • Handwired with Orange Drop capacitors to further expand on the tonal capabilities of the P-90s
  • Glossy, breathable nitrocellulose lacquer finish encapsulates a "fresh" vintage aesthetic that gets better with age

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items

Reviews

P90’s Rock!
This is my second Gibson Les Paul Special. Like the first, it arrived in flawless condition. If you haven't tried P90 pickups, you really should. They have a broader range of tones than a humbucker and are throatier than conventional single coils. Yes, they are not hum canceling, but are very quiet when playing clean. No one notices the 60 cycle hum when overdriven because they're simply glorious. I don't know how Gibson does it, but both of my Specials are properly intonated…even though they only have a simple wrap-around tailpiece. I highly recommend this guitar! Many thanks to my sales engineer, Jim Ridings, and the rest of the Sweetwater team for making this another awesome buying experience.

Gibson LP Special Vintage Cherry
I'm beyond thrilled with this guitar. I wanted the P90 experience and got it. I wasn't expecting the Vintage Cherry wood grain finish and the quality build. Right out of the box this guitar rocked. I will never sell it. A huge shout out to sales engineer Tommy McLaughlin for helping me find the right one. Thank you Tommy and Sweetwater.
Gorgeous Special Dark Cherry
4'th time's a charm! OK I admit I'm a perfectionist. I must be Sweetwater's most hard to please customer. They hit this one outta the park. Big shout out to my sales rep Colton Kreuser for picking out this very "Special" Special LP. I sent back three TV Yellows, one for a lousy color match at the two piece body and two for fretboard and binding scratches and nicks. None of which affected playability but I gotta wonder why this one is flawless. And let me say this darker cherry finish is stunning with dark rosewood board, black headstock and black white black three ply pickguard and creme neck binding. Having had both the tv yellow an the cherry, the cherry shows the grain better. Both colors are sweet though. And ohhh those Gibby P90's! Beautiful sparkling cleans to growling, all easily controlled by the volume pot. Speaking of which, they both taper beautifully. If you want a responsive versatile tone machine this is the ticket.
Music background: Playing guitar since 1965, garage bands and occasional guest guitar sit in. Gear obsessed since 1998, over 15 amps over the years and so many guitars I’ve lost count! My current rig includes Gibson HP LP Tribute, LP Special, 1975 Harmony Rocket, Fender P
Gibson is back
I just got this yesterday and I have to say for the money this may be the best guitar I have. The P90s and articulate and dynamic. They ring like a bell or can get gritty and grimy, but still clear. I would give it 5 stars but the fret board was a little dirty and need a nice conditioning and polish. My sales engineer James Wroblewski was amazing and always is.
Music background: Love music and guitar far from professional.
Very Pleased
I'm a fan of the 70's classic rock genre and have been enamored with the idea of trying a guitar with P90's so when my wife signed off on a new guitar the Les Paul Special with P90's was at the top of my list. I was mildly concerned with the neck size (chunky) but with the ability to return it if needed I felt safe in giving it a go.

Order experience:
If you've never bought a guitar from Sweetwater (this is my second) you should expect a great experience. They send you hi-res professionally shot pictures of the guitar shortly after you order and ship super fast. The Les Paul shipped the next day and was on my doorstep in two days. Super nice.

The guitar - Pros:
1) The fit and finish on this guitar are perfect. No sharp fret edges (Ive seen a few Gibson's with sharp fret edges at the local guitar store) and no blemishes at all. The finish is super nice - I'm glad I went with the Nitro lacquer finish - the pictures don't really do it justice.
2) Playability is superb. The setup was great (for me) right out of the box - action not super low - just right. The marketing blurb claims they Plek the guitar and I believe it. No fret buzz and she bends super nice all over the neck. Great out of the box experience for me.
3) The P90's!! I watched plenty of review videos prior to making my purchase but was still a bit surprised by the sounds coming from the pickups. They are definitely more "humbuckery" than "single coilery" - so more on the darker side than the bright side but without the mud (for lack of a better work) you can hear on some humbuckers. They go from fairly hot at full volume to nice and clean when you roll off - with a beautiful tone.
4) The neck feels great in my hands. I've always stuck with more modern neck shapes that tend to be more thin than chunky but that will change going forward. This is a chunky neck but it feels super comfortable and I've adjusted to it pretty quickly. Along with the sound of the P90's this is my favorite part of the guitar.

The guitar - Cons:
1) The P90's. Okay - they sound great - really great - nice 70's classic rock type vibe - but they are noisy. I knew this coming in - and they aren't egregious - but they certainly put out some hum/noise.
2) Intonation is a compromise. As with the noisy P90's I knew the reputation of the vintage Wraparound Stoptail bridge and it hasn't dissapointed. I put some new strings on it and stretched them for a day or so then set about to work on the intonation. Moving he tailpiece almost all the way back has resulted in the closest I can get it - with all the strings a few cents off with the exception of the G string which is a good 10 cents sharp. I can work around this by tuning the guitar to the middle of the neck - fitting my playing style of mostly power chords and pentatonics :) - and it sounds great. If I want to use any open chords or strings I tune the G string about 5 cents flat as a compromise and it works for me. I may try some different tailpieces at some point but for now this works well enough.
3) The vintage type tuners aren't super smooth - but they work.

So that's it - overall I'm super happy with the guitar and look forward to many happy years with it!
