The No-fluff Les Paul Junior

The Les Paul Junior began in the 1950s with humble origins. However, like other Gibson models from that era, it went on to gain stature and immense popularity among guitar enthusiasts worldwide. While this striking model pays tribute to its traditional counterparts in both design and functionality, it benefits from a simpler, performance-oriented format. Its slim, lightweight mahogany body and '50s-style mahogany neck enable hours of comfortable play without back pain, offering an authentic fretting experience. True to the original Les Paul Juniors of the era, it is equipped with a single P-90 pickup and an Orange Drop capacitor, providing a wide range of sonic textures suitable for various music genres. To complete the package, a traditional nitrocellulose finish gives the Les Paul Junior a fresh factory lacquer that allows it to breathe and resonate naturally, aging beautifully over time — just like the storied instruments of the past.

P-90 pickups: dare to sound different

We have many fiercely loyal P-90 fans here at Sweetwater. These guitarists know that the P-90 offers a unique tonal palette that is distinct from — and complements — humbuckers and traditional single-coils. Gibson’s first successful single-coil pickup, the P-90 can be heard on countless classic recordings. With its biting treble and high output, the P-90 cleans up nicely when you roll back your guitar’s volume pot. It’s an amazingly versatile pickup with its own brand of grit — a bit brighter, leaner, and less refined than a humbucker and almost as hot. Hit your amp hard, and the P-90 really wails. Plugged into a proper high-gain tube amp, you can elicit grind, sizzle, and bark that would be impossible with humbuckers — or with other single-coils, for that matter. To hear P-90s brilliantly deployed in historical context, check out Santana’s fiery Woodstock performance or the Who’s masterful Live at Leeds album.

Vintage ’50s neck

Comfort and playability were two of Gibson’s primary concerns when they were designing the Les Paul Junior. You’ll be delighted by how this guitar’s vintage ’50s neck profile comfortably fills your hand in just the right way. For your playing pleasure, the rosewood fingerboard is buffed to silky smoothness to let those ripping solos flow from your fingers effortlessly.

Nitro finish for the look and feel of a classic

Gibson gave the Les Paul Junior a gorgeous nitrocellulose lacquer finish. Nitro finishes — standard back in the day — are significantly thinner than today’s polyurethane finishes, allowing the guitar to “breathe.” Nitro finishes not only look amazing, but they also enhance the instrument’s tonal qualities. The Les Paul Junior has the look and feel of a lovingly cared-for classic — one that will only improve with age.

Gibson Les Paul Junior Features:

  • Slim, classic Les Paul body shape that sits comfortably in your lap or with a strap
  • Mahogany body and neck set the standard for a warm, harmonically-rich sonic profile
  • Period-correct ’50s-style mahogany neck brings authenticity to a vintage Les Paul feel
  • Rosewood fingerboard with medium-jumbo frets provides a slick playing experience
  • Potent P-90 pickup delivers a blend of piercing highs and grit not found in other styles of pickups
  • Handwired with an Orange Drop capacitor to further expand on the tonal capabilities of the P-90
  • Glossy, breathable nitrocellulose lacquer finish encapsulates a "fresh" vintage aesthetic that gets better with age

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Reviews

Gibson TV Yellow Junior
This guitar is amazing!! Definitely exceeded my expectations. The neck is bigger but very comfortable still. The TV yellow color is perfect, shows wood grain through and it is so easy to play. Mine happened to be in the 6 pound range and I love the lightweight feel. There's something special about this new era of Gibson.

Gibson Les Paul Jr from Sweetwater
I have always sworn against buying a guitar online, especially with acoustics, but definitely including electrics. I've been on the lookout for the lightest Jr I could find and luckily enough, Sweetwater had one for sale. Exactly what I wanted. TV Yellow Les Paul jr with the hard case. This one happened to be a "Certified Open Box" with one little tiny blemish on the headstock that affected nothing about the guitar. Needless to say, this guitar came in, within 5 minutes I decided I made a great choice. It was perfectly set up to factory spec, came in a box with great packaging. I'm very pleased with my purchase. I still recommend playing a guitar before you buy it, but I definitely lucked out with this one. Thank you, Sweetwater!

Perfection
I've been a long time user of two types of guitars: the Fender Telecaster and Gibson p-90 equipped juniors/specials. I play country music so you can see where a telecaster comes in handy, but have you ever messed with the volume knob on one of these and noticed that they clean up with incredible sparkle and chime? Basically, I love the sound a telecaster makes, but I find them unforgiving and the modern necks too small for larger hands to play. The Gibson Les Paul Junior is my answer to that problem. Yes, if you like classic rock, by all means crank this think to ten and enjoy, but there's so much more to it than that. Turn that volume down a bit and it immediately starts to sound like that other guitar I was talking about with a bit less of an icepick. Considering you get that, a top-of-the-line hard-shell case, and the rest of the case candy with this purchase, and it's a no-brainer. If you want to play modern country music or clean it up and play the classics, this is the guitar to do it. As always, I must end this review with a thanks to Sweetwater for having the best customer service department in North America.

Can’t put it down!!!
I'm not sure if this thing is magic, if Gibson is just nailing right now or a bit of both. I'm over the moon with this junior. The grain visible through the tv yellow is amazing. The tone and sustain is killer. I was worried about the vintage spec bridge holding tube but no matter how many boomer bends I lay on it, it WON'T go out of tune! The volume knobs give you unlimited tones and the simplicity of the junior really does seem to coax your best (or worst) self out of you. Also huge thanks to my rep, Darcee Berg who was so helpful and great to work with. If you're on the fence, order it now!! Way better than my Gibson's from the 2010 era.

Everything you need and nothing you don’t
I was visiting the Sweetwater campus in Fort Wayne when I walked into the guitar store and picked up this wonderful guitar. I had played a friends LP Jr. before and was looking for one of my own. Man did this guitar fit the bill. Fit and finish was perfect. Playability was perfect and the tone was killer. The guitar has that killer P90 tone and reacts very well to changes in of the volume and tone controls. Sustain is unbelievable.
One pickup, one tone, and 1 volume. It's all you need. Beautiful in its simplicity! My sales rep Tyler McDonald is fantastic. Can't beat Sweetwater sales and service!!!
