A Steadfast Les Paul Custom Reissue Primed to Perform

Gibson’s 50th anniversary celebration for opening its Nashville facility continues with a reimagining of an ever-growing favorite among the Gibson community: the ’70s Les Paul Custom. Designed as a compilation of “best of” features from this highly experimental yet iconic time in guitar building, the ’70s Les Paul Custom channels inspiration from a solid mahogany body. It ups the ante with such period-correct appointments as a 3-piece maple cap; 5-ply binding; a maple neck with a headstock volute; a thin, breathable nitro finish; diamond-shaped Posi-lock strap buttons; witch hat control knobs; a Nashville bridge; and a set of calibrated, era-specific T-type pickups. Many legendary artists are synonymous with playing ’70s-era Les Paul Customs, including Al Di Meola, Ace Frehley, Adam Jones, Randy Rhoads, John Sykes, and Frank Zappa. This ’70s Les Paul Custom not only pays tribute to these timeless guitarists — it also leaves plenty of room for you to make your own mark.

The best of the Norlin era

Though typically thought of as a contentious and experimental time in Gibson's history, the core fundamentals of the ’70s Les Paul Custom are sure to win favor from even the most vintage loyalists. To start, a 3-piece maple top joins a solid mahogany body to provide a rich tonal foundation full of sustain. True to late Norlin-era specs, a maple neck adds a crisp and snappy definition with a comfortable ’70s profile neck. No Les Paul from this time period would be complete without an added volute carve near the back of the headstock — a crucial point facet preserving neck stability. All of these combined tonewood elements project a sonic presence that is unmistakably a Les Paul Custom.

Equipped for maximum performance

Behind the classic ’70s Les Paul Custom aesthetic lies a host of performance and quality upgrades that make this powerhouse gig-ready right out of the case. Firstly, the 12-inch radius ebony fingerboard not only stays consistent with Gibson’s slick playability, but you also get taller, longer-lasting medium-jumbo frets that allow you to dig into larger-than-life string bends. String resonance and tuning stability are also bolstered by a larger Nashville bridge, Grover tuners, and a Graph Tech TUSQ XL nut, ensuring a highly accurate, snag-free tuning and setup experience.

Throwback T-style pickups project vintage power

As if Sweetwater’s 6-string virtuosos and Gibson fanatics aren’t excited enough about the ’70s Les Paul Custom, let’s not forget the matched T-style pickup set. The T-style set, also created using period-correct specs and materials, offers PAF-style response with greater note separation. Emphasis on a brighter, more immediate attack comes courtesy of their Alnico V magnets. Furthermore, the dynamic and open voice of the T-style set allows for extreme versatility depending on your guitar and amp settings. In particular, the neck pickup warms up beautifully while still possessing a top-end chime to cut through your mix without sounding brittle.

Gibson ’70s Les Paul Custom Features:

  • Gibson’s iconic electric guitar celebrates 50 yrs. of operations in Nashville
  • The first Les Paul Custom in regular production in over 2 decades
  • Mahogany body with a carved 3-piece maple top sets the sonic foundation with a warm, yet snappy sound profile
  • Era-correct maple neck with volute reinforces headstock stability
  • 12-in. radius ebony fingerboard with 22 medium-jumbo frets facilitates flexible best-of-all-worlds playability
  • Posi-lock strap buttons and witch hat knobs complete the ’70s Les Paul aesthetic
  • Period-accurate T-type pickups deliver a dynamic voice with clarity and bite
  • Classic 2-volume, 2-tone control layout offers vast tonal variety between both pickups
  • Nashville TOM bridge with stopbar tailpiece
  • 1.69-in. Graph Tech nut augments harmonic richness and reduces string slippage
  • 18:1 ratio Grover tuners increase tuning accuracy
  • Glossy, breathable nitrocellulose lacquer finish encapsulates a "fresh" vintage aesthetic that gets better with age

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items

Reviews

Gibson 70's Les Paul Custom
First off I have to give a big thanks to my sales engineer Jeff Weinstein! He made the buying process very easy. Now for the guitar. This is by far the nicest Gibson I've had to date! These are made in the U.S. shop not the custom shop but from owning a custom shop Gibson les paul custom in the past I have to say this is a nicer guitar all around. It impresses and inspires me everytime I start playing it. Guitar was double boxed and shipped fast! Thanks again Sweetwater!!!
Outstanding!
I have to say Gibson was on their game when they made this guitar. Plays beautifully and tuning stability is outstanding. Flawless finish. It's heavy but that's to be expected. Exceeded my expectations. Thanks to Nick Barton for a smooth sales process.
Music background: Professional Guitarist
2025 Gibson 70s Les Paul custom
Great guitar, had a few small problems that I have fixed and it's a dream guitar. Devin is a great person to deal with and I am loving the guitar. The neck reminds me of the 70s Gibson necks it's not exactly like them but very close. Pickups are right there with the T tops and cut very well, especially the neck the bridge is a little bit more mellow than the real thing but I can work with that. Mine is 11 pounds and I love it. Great job Gibson. If I have any complaints I wish they would have used the bigger headstock like the original.
Music background: Playing guitar for 47 years because I love guitar
Best gibson I’ve owned
When I was 14 I the video of CCR at the royal Albert hall, and the Black custom that John Fogerty played has been a dream guitar ever seince, but every custom Gibson offered has been 5K plus. With this new release. I like the lower price point, and how it does not compromise any playability, or tone. Number one Les Paul guitar. It's a classic rock staple, and if your a CCR fan it's a great way to get a John Fogerty guitar that won't put you in debt rest of your life
Music background: CCR, the Beatles, the beach boys 50-90 guitar centric music. NO MODERN, nothing past 1993
Knocked it out if the park
I normally don't leave reviews. But Gibson knocked it out of the park with this one. The pickups are great and versatile. They handled every setting my Mesa Triple Rectifier threw at it-clean to vintage to modern. The pickups might be too loose if you're a metal player or someone who requires high gain with articulation. The neck feels awesome. I have a 1978 Les Paul standard and the carve is very similar but with more modern fretwire. Fantastic feel. Love the volute! Mine is Ebony-a classic color you can't go wrong with. I'm normally a tinkerer who tends to mess with setup, electronics, etc. But I wouldn't change a thing on this guitar. Good job, Gibson.

My sales rep has been Bob Furlong for the entirety of my tenure as a Sweetwater customer. He's a joy to talk to and has never done me wrong.
Music background: Guitar player of 23 years. Played in cover and original bands playing a range from classic to hard rock.
