Signature Les Paul from a Metal Icon

Hunting for that perfect balance of brutal tone and versatile features? The new Epiphone Matt Heafy Les Paul Custom Origins 7-string is your winning bet. This long-awaited collaboration features a mahogany body, maple top, mahogany neck, and custom-voiced Fishman Fluence pickups, all designed with input from Matt Heafy (Trivium, Capharnaum, Ibaraki). This staggering guitar pairs modern bells and whistles with a nostalgic look that's inspired by the first Les Paul that Matt owned. Sweetwater guitarists are quite impressed with the value and craftsmanship this guitar displays. Though designed for heavy-hitting metal tone, the two Fishman pickups onboard leverage a huge number of voicings for tonal alchemy that turns any playing style into pure gold.

Heafy-voiced Fishman pickups

This 7-string Les Paul features two gold-accented Fluence Fishman pickups custom voiced and developed to Matt Heafy’s specifications. An active alnico neck pickup delivers high-output humbucking tone that’s crisp and fluid, while the ceramic bridge pickup delivers more aggressive bite. And the feast of fire doesn’t stop there. Four unique push-pull knobs also give you access to overwound single-coil tones, and the bridge pickup can be switched to passive humbucking for a different tenor. The result? Five distinct pickup settings for use separately or together, and an insane amount of tonal variety. Whatever genre is your jam, there’s a tone onboard that you're going to love.

Optimized Les Paul tone and speed

Matt Heafy’s signature model is powered by the tried-and-true formula of solid mahogany tonewoods with a maple top. This same combination has fueled decades of iconic rock. You’ll find mahogany perfect for bold tone with big sustain that sings and that the maple top adds a slight bright crispiness. When it comes to playability, the Matt Heafy Les Paul is optimized for speed. Its precision mahogany neck features a SpeedTaper “D” neck carve with a contoured heel for upper-fret access and lightning-fast riffs up and down the neck.

Winning hardware

The hardware onboard the Epiphone Matt Heafy Les Paul Custom Origins is exactly what you’d expect from its namesake. Premium mini-Rotomatic locking tuners and a Tune-o-matic bridge ensure strong tuning stability, even when you really dig in. The guitar's custom black control knobs have a lower profile compared to standard LP knobs, so you never have to fear a volume or tone control mishap in the middle of a performance. Plus, this guitar’s strap buttons feature a reinforced cap that’s built to work like aftermarket strap locks, so your axe stays 100% secure even when you’re lost in the moment.

Best Metal Less Paul

If your a less Paul guy who plays metal this is your guitar. I'm sure the 6 string model is just as good. But this 7 is beyond amazing. The fretboard feels amazing. The slim d profile neck is fast and surprisingly thin. Not as thin as some Ibanez necks but personally if your playing Heafy riffs I feel you want a little beef. The custom Matt Heafy Fishman picksups are excellent. Exactly what this guitar needed. 3 voicing options between the bridge and neck. You can pair this with any amp and sound big. I preordered this after having played a couple Less Paul's before, never owned one but a huge trivium fan. Knowing Matt's love for perfection and Less Paul's I knew it would be great. Alex Burgland was my sales engineer and he answered every question I had about 7's and even helped me to transition smoothly. Hasn't hesitated to tell me his options on gear and help me to better understand the equipment! Couldn't recommend him enough!

Best 7-string I've owned

This guitar in terms of feel, is one of the best 7-strings I've tried. I've owned a Schecter Demon 7 that I returned a week later because the neck just wasn't right for me and the pickups left a lot to be desired, and played a few other guitars, such as Ibanez and PRS, at some of my local stores, but none had a neck that was as great as this one is. The tones that come out this guitar are just absolutely beefy and full. I have a set of Matt Beefy's 6-string pickups in my prophecy and I actually prefer the sound that comes from the 7-string set, that might have to do with scale length though. I had the guitar Plek'd before I received it and it plays amazingly because of it. I also tried getting a Switchcraft switch installed, purely for aesthetics, but I forgot there are two styles for the switch, a long shaft that has a skirted nut, which is the one I wanted, and a short shaft that uses a nut and washer like the stock one does, which is the one I received. The reason why I wanted to change it is because I like the look of the skirted nut over the nut and washer that you find on the stock Epiphone switch. I ended up having to buy the switch separately and replace the switch myself after the one that came with the guitar was already replaced. In the photos I uploaded, the switch with the cream tip is the short shaft switch that replaced the Epiphone one, the one with black tip is the one I wished had come with the guitar after I ordered the service to be performed. For this reason, I gave it 4 stars otherwise I would have given it the full 5.

Should Probably be 5 Stars….

The Guitar is AMAZING!! One of the best I have ever played as far as overall guitars go. And for 7 String guitars IT IS the ABSOLUTE BEST I have ever played. Well made, Set up seems to be on point. And I dropped the Tuning from the standard it was shipped to me in. Just put my first set of heavier gauge strings on so hopefully it doesnt effect the set up too much? Minor adjustments at most. Only reason I docked a half of a star off of Full 5 Star is… The pickups, I personally dont like active sets at all. But thats not why I took away. The pickups were installed backwards(N in B and B in N) obviously from factory this way. Seems like this happens often with Epiphone and Gibson? Quality department should be tightened up on these sort of mistakes. However that and the fact that it has the 70s style strap buttons instead of actual locks. Locks would be better but not a major hit. Really stil is a 5 star quality guitar.
