The One, the Only Gibson Les Paul Custom

With its sonic punch, fluid playability, and classic “tuxedo” appointments, the Gibson Les Paul Custom is equal parts elegance and brute strength. Fitted with a matched 490/498 humbucker set that takes you from mellow jazz tones to full shred with a pinky twist, the Gibson Les Paul Custom is ultra-responsive to your touch. Its fast-action neck, smooth-as-silk ebony fingerboard, and medium-jumbo frets facilitate the speedy, dexterous fretwork we’ve heard across prog, fusion, and hard rock genres from guitar virtuosos like Robert Fripp, Al Di Meola, and Zakk Wylde. Gibson’s Custom Shop luthiers selected premium mahogany for the body and they capped it with a 2-piece carved maple top — a classic recipe for rich, sustaining, articulate tone that’ll slice right through the mix.

A tradition of effortless playability

The Gibson Les Paul Custom is well known for its playability; many guitarists use the word “effortless” to describe it. Soon after its 1954 introduction, players (and Gibson literature) started referring to it as the “Fretless Wonder.” It wasn’t fretless, of course, but Gibson had fitted the Custom with flat, low-profile frets, which allowed your fingers to fly over the fingerboard. Today’s LP Custom is equipped with medium-jumbo frets more suited to contemporary playing styles, but seamless playability remains a hallmark of this iconic solidbody electric guitar.

A classic tonewood recipe for sustain and articulation

Although the original Gibson Les Paul Custom had an all-mahogany body, today’s Custom features a mahogany body with a carved 2-piece maple top. This combination serves up the density needed for massive sustain and precise note articulation. The result is a highly playable instrument that looks and sounds incredible. Gold hardware provides a crowning finishing touch for the Gibson Les Paul Custom.

Matched humbucker set delivers a universe of tone on the Gibson Les Paul Custom

This Gibson Les Paul Custom is spec’d with a matched pair of 490/498 humbuckers. Naturally, these pickups really shine when pumping out the classic fat, snarling tone that is the Les Paul’s stock-in-trade. They are delightfully responsive, though — simply roll back the volume, and they clean up beautifully. Sweetwater guitarists love this pickup combo, and so will you. Whether you’re delivering your musical message with mellow jazz tones, bone-rattling crunch, or a blistering liquid inferno — the Gibson Les Paul Custom rewards your touch with world-class responsiveness.

Gibson voiced the pickups on the Les Paul Custom for tonal characteristics similar to their ’57 Classics, but with a slight increase in the upper mids for a more contemporary humbucker sound. The neck-position 490R gives you the tonal characteristics of an original PAF, albeit with a slight upper-mid bump, which delivers clarity and definition that complement the wonderfully warm sound of this pickup: great for tasty, chimey rhythm work. Gibson’s 498T alnico humbucker is the ideal bridge pickup if your playing requires an emphasis on mids and highs. A high-output version of the 490T, this pickup combines a slightly hotter Alnico V magnet with a specially wound coil combination. The result is increased crunch and sustain — a potent sonic elixir for heavier music styles. Each pickup’s pole pieces are aligned to match the string spacing at the neck and bridge, respectively.

Nitro finish, for the look and feel of a classic

This Gibson Les Paul Custom wears a gorgeous nitrocellulose lacquer finish. Nitro finishes — standard back in the day — are significantly thinner than today's polyurethane finishes, allowing the guitar to "breathe." Nitro finishes not only look amazing, but they also enhance the instrument's tonal qualities. This Gibson Les Paul Custom has the look and feel of a lovingly cared for classic — one that will only improve with age.

Gibson Custom Les Paul Custom Features:

  • An iconic solidbody electric from one of the world’s most renowned guitar makers
  • Classic Les Paul construction, utilizing lightweight mahogany body with 9-hole weight relief and a 2-piece carved maple top
  • Mahogany neck shaped into a comfortable modern medium C profile
  • Gorgeous ebony fingerboard set with MOP block inlays and bend-friendly medium-jumbo frets
  • 498T and 490R humbucker dish out a rougher, more hard-rock-ready twist on old-school PAF sonics
  • High-class gold hardware includes Grover Kidney tuning machines and a classic TOM bridge/stop tailpiece
  • Iconic Les Paul Custom appointments include marvelous multi-ply body binding, headstock binding, and MOP headstock inlay
  • Nitro lacquer finish will age and develop over time, just like a golden-age Gibson

Why Buy Your Guitar from Sweetwater?

See how Sweetwater goes to great lengths to give you the very best online guitar buying experience. From our online Guitar Gallery that allows you to see and select the exact instrument you want to our 55-point Inspection process and our in-house guitar techs, we take the guesswork out of buying your next guitar online.

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Reviews

Worth the wait (for a great LP to be shipped in)
After a few inspections of in-stock LP Customs (some damaged and dinged) I decided to wait for the next shipment to arrive. A shout out and big thank you to the awesome Mr. Bart Amburn who notified me of the next deliveries to the Sweetwater facility and provided hi-res photos so that I could thoroughly inspect my next major purchase. Once I was satisfied and approved my selection, Bart and the Sweetwater Team gave my LP a final inspection and was safely packaged. And shipping was extremely quick (thanks FedEx). After 4 weeks of jamming on this beauty of a guitar, I am hooked on Les Pauls (haha)! To the entire Sweetwater team, thank you again for providing me awesome service and support over the years. You guys ROCK!
Really Nice Axe!!
First off I NEVER GIVE 5 STAR reviews. This guitar has a feel (AND A WEIGHT) unlike any other guitar I have ever owned. I discussed this guitar months ago and due to a "Computer Glitch" i am a computer guy so I know how the glitch happens. But I got this guitar after all this running around weight 10.4 pounds plugged it in and everything came together. Since I sit and play I really don't care about the weight the tones and sustain are unbelievable I have always been a Strat player then I found a beautiful Standard I couldn't live without but the custom is just an unbelievable instrument I decided to let the great prices "Nolan" was tossing at me for 2 more standards and an SG to go for this one at this time. I believe the one pictured on the site is mine I was bent because I wanted to be the one to take the plastic off the pick guard. If I was to rate this guitar to all of the guitars I have owned and the 15 I have now it is the top 9.5 of 10 the neck is like nothing I have ever played on next is my 1996 Deluxe Strat my now second.
Only a Gibson is Good Enough - Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul Custom

An excellent instrument from the Gibson Custom Shop and well worth the investment. Definitely recommend if your budget allows, and you only get one life! Props to Sweetwater for an amazing setup. Plays effortlessly and sounds amazing. I recommend allowing time for the guitar to acclimate properly when received to prevent potential finish checking/cracks due to the Nitro finish. I also bought a set of Grover strap locks, but the stock screw on the lower strap button is a larger diameter and quite longer than the Grover replacement screw, so only one strap lock could be installed and I found a different type of strap lock for the other one. Thanks to Matt Christopherson for giving me a great deal!

Best Instrument I own and amazing customer service
This is my favorite Gibson I have owned. The guitar which I am writing the review for arrived in perfect condition with no issues. The weight on it is within a couple ounces of my other LPs but both the neck and carved top are significantly more comfortable to play on. All of the binding and finish looks fantastic.

Sound wise it is both fuller and tighter than my Les Paul standards. It is not as resonant as my 57 reissue but it more than makes up for that by having much more clarity and detail in the mids/highs. So far I have found that this guitar can suit whatever genre I am playing more easily than my other Gibsons. Initially, I had planned to mod the guitar with Fishman active pickups to get more modern and versatile sounds but the 498/490 accomplishes this already but with greater depth of sound and dynamics. The pickups voice the guitar very well. The bridge is fatter and aggressive with a bit of a boost in the high mids but can be dialed back for more classic sounds and the neck is a nice classic rounded sound without being muddy or unclear.

Thank you to Halaj Mack, Jericho Valentine, and Brandon Francis at Sweetwater for the amazing and unparalleled customer service. The first two guitars took some damage in shipping that was outside of their control. The customer service team was incredibly fast with shipping out a new one with overnight shipping at no extra cost. Not once but twice. The team did a fantastic job handling a situation that could have easily been a nightmare. I was very impressed and they earned a loyal customer.

Best Les Paul I've Ever Owned
I was hesitant to buy this guitar because of the price tag, but I'm so glad I finally pulled the trigger and got it. After unpacking the guitar I went over every square inch looking for any flaws. I know no guitars are perfect, but it's simply part of my ritual. This guitar was almost flawless, and is even better looking in person. Now on to the most important part...sound and feel. The action is set up exactly to my liking and feels perfect. The guitar sounds like my 50's LP Standard...it has plenty of warm classic LP tone while still having a pretty nasty bite. Get this guitar!!!! You'll love it!!!
