Darryl Jones's Signature Bass!

A real workhorse bass, Lakland's Darryl Jones Signature Skyline DJ-5 solidbody electric bass guitar gives you the feel and extreme tonal range you need to play any style of bass. Whether you're a fingerstylist rocking out smooth low-end thump in an R&B band or a pick-slinging, hard-hitting percussive player who loves to jam out fast-moving metal bass lines, you'll find the tone you need in your Lakland Skyline DJ-5. That's because the Skyline DJ-5 combines the harmonically rich sound of swamp ash and maple with the wide tonal range of Lakland's Vintage Wound single-coil pickups. Pick up a Lakland Skyline DJ-5 bass from Sweetwater today!

Based on Darryl Jones's original custom bass

When Darryl Jones commissioned fellow bass legend Albey Balgochian to create his first custom bass back in 1985, the two began a friendship that gave birth to the original Darryl Jones Signature Model Lakland Bass. Decades later, Lakland is proud to offer the Skyline DJ-5, an affordable bass guitar modeled after Darryl's original bass. The Skyline DJ-5 even gives you the same custom-contoured curves and special Vintage Wound pickups as the original US version, plus extra touches such as the bound fingerboard and elegant block inlays.

Lakland Vintage Wound single-coil pickups deliver clear tone with tons of definition

From tubby neck tones that are perfect for R&B to sizzling, aggressive, rock-style attack back at the bridge, the Lakland Skyline DJ-5 gives you an absolutely epic range of usable bass sound. That's thanks to its pair of Lakland Vintage Wound single-coil pickups. These extraordinary single-coil bass pickups give the Skyline DJ-5 the kind of low-end clarity you'd expect from a classic bass, but with added bite and top-end definition. That makes the Skyline DJ-5 a great bass for a wide range of musical styles and playing techniques.

Longer scale length for better B-string tone

Bassists at Sweetwater especially like Lakland five-string basses because their longer 35" scale length holds the low B string at a higher tension. This means that your lowest notes will have more punch and impact, with more note definition too. If you've played a few five-string bass guitars you know that some of them can sound quite flubby in the lowest registers - with the DJ-5 your tone will stay tight and pronounced right down to the low B.

Lakland Skyline Darryl Jones DJ-5 5-string Bass Guitar Features:

  • An amazing electric bass designed based on Darryl Jones's (Miles Davis, Sting, Madonna, The Rolling Stones) original custom Lakland model
  • An all-around workhorse bass you can use for any playing technique or musical style
  • Specially contoured swamp ash body provides a resonant, full-bodied tone
  • Rounded maple neck with bound maple fretboard feels amazing and delivers excellent sustain and punch
  • Lakland Vintage Wound single-coil pickups give you classic sound with extra crisp highs and phenomenal low-end definition
  • 5-saddle Lakland Dual-Design Bridge makes string changes fast and easy while accommodating a wide range of string types
  • Additional fine touches include block fretboard inlays and matching headstock finish

DJ5 a solid bass at a great price.

My first passive bass. I have a Lakland 55-02 and now a DJ5. I've been considering a Dj5 for about 9 months. This bass is incredible: smooth neck, growl and tone. You won't be disappointed in purchasing this baby!!!! You can't beat the price for such a solid piece of work.

An Overwhelming Instrument With A Great Price Tag

I bought this Lakland bass around a year ago with the professional help of David Winkert, a Sales Engineer at Lakland. I was in search of the Lakland 55-60, and figured the tone is the same but with extras added. This Bass is a very professional sounding instrument and is easily my favorite sounding bass. I am currently getting a new precision bass as of course, this bass's Jazz Pickups will not be able to imitate that of a precision's without the addition of bass pedals.

The build is solid, the guitar came in one piece and without any flaws, and smells of new wood. I am more than please with this Bass, Sweetwater, and the careful attention that Sweetwater's Sales Engineer provided, taking from his time to actually do some research to find the right product fit for me.

I've owned three Lakland Basses thus far, and can safely say this is a top end model, despite what the "Skyline" in its name would have you believe. If you do not care about having a super detailed / finished product, and just want an all around well balanced, pleasant sounding tone, and are in a budget, don't be afraid of choosing this Bass Guitar over its US counterpart.

Don't fret about the 35

What you will notice though is how clear and defined the B string is!

After quite a bit of head to head with my well set up 34" 5er, the difference is clear, Lakland's 35" scale results in a far better 5th string with no flab and no wolf tones.

Between the superior B, the handwound pups, the impeccable fretwork and the very low action (the DJ5 Skyline is made and finished in Indonesia but assembly and set up, including PLEKing, is done in Lakland's Chicago factory using US electronics and bridge), it's shaping up to be my new #1 5er. If I was to nitpick, it didn't come with a case nor a gig bag and the pickguard has a very slight gap between the two screws on the bass horn. The p/g is no big deal but the lack of a gig bag or a case for a partly overseas made bass that only costs $150 less than the equivalent US Fender is a slight annoyance to me. In fact I called Sweetwater about this and I was advised that I should give the DJ5 a chance and I can always return the bass if I wasn't happy with that issue. Sure enough, the overall quality and playability helped get me over the case/gig bag issue quick. I just look at it this way, if spending the $100-$150 to buy a hard shell case brings me up to the price level of a US Fender, I still end up with a bass that is, IMO, easily equal if not superior in quality to a US Fender but with a far, far better B.

The buying experience from Sweetwater through Brian Loney (fellow triathlete!) was pleasant and problem free and the bass was shipped triple boxed to ensure safe delivery. I also got numerous email notifications on the status and pictures of the bass.

All in all I am very happy with my purchase and would, without reservation, recommend buying your Lakland from Sweetwater through Brian.

Check your shipping box for case candy before you throw it away :) I got Tootsie Rolls and Laffy Taffy :)

Best bass jazz in this price range

Amazing sound, flawless frets work, B string very solid. I have owned several jazz type basses from Squier to Dingwall, the DJ is my all time favorite.

Does your favorite bass always leave you wanting more? That's how it was for many of us at Sweetwater, until we got our hands on Lakland basses. We love these instruments because they take the iconic designs we know and kick them up a notch. When Lakland bass models go through our 55-point Evaluation, Sweetwater guitar techs can't help but notice the consistency of their superior craftsmanship - they're among the finest instruments we see. Speaking of consistency, whether you're picking up a classic 44-94 or a more affordable Skyline series model, you'll love the way these basses play, and whether you prefer boutique passive pickups or premium active electronics, look no further than Lakland.
