French Finesse Meets Modern Modularity

Drawing from the innovative designs of its spiritual predecessor, Behringer’s Kobol Expander masterfully models the magic of its all-analog waveform-morphing architecture, resulting in a highly versatile semi-modular synth that oozes 1970s-style character. Its seven waveshapes are continuously morphable, utilizing a pair of VCOs to evoke a suite of duophonic sound-shaping possibilities, from sawtooth to PWM, each of which can be adjusted or modulated independently. The onboard VCF implements a 4-pole design that has been lauded for its naturally saturating quality, perfect for sculpting onboard synth sounds and external audio alike. An analog LFO spans two waveform options with a bevy of destination choices, allowing for nuanced tone crafting that’s instantly elevated through the oscillator sync or the noise generator, resulting in mammoth-sized synth sonics. Behringer’s Kobol Expander is armed with a flexible suite of connectivity choices, including dedicated 5-pin DIN MIDI ports for input and thru-put use, a USB-B port, multiple audio outputs, and a Poly Chain, letting you connect up to 16 units for simultaneous use and 16-voice polyphony. Sweetwater’s synthesists especially appreciate its commitment to modular use, including 32 patch points and a Eurorack-compatible design that lets you remove the module for use with Eurorack systems. No matter how you play, the Kobol Expander is precision-engineered for immense interoperative potential.

Reviews

Behringer Kobol Expander
This is a classic analog synth. It's patching is pathed and labeled as opposed to just all being clustered in an array at the top of side. Amazing fat sounds!
Music background: Producer
This Synth is a No Brainer!
First let me say that I am a big Behringer fan and own a lot of their Synthesizers.

When I first heard that Behringer was making their version of this Classic Rare French Synthesizer I was not all that interested or so I thought.
Then after listening to several members on different Synth Forums I belong to, talking so highly about it I thought I should give it a try.

I have to say, Behringer did a perfect reproduction of this unique French "Classic" Synthesizer. I absolutely love its unique and quirky design. The Oscillators, with morphing waveforms like the Neutron have lots of character The 24dB resonant Ladder Type filter, although not the Moog design is excellent and it maintains the low end reduction when resonance is added making it its own thing. This is not a very complicated Synthesizer by any means, but what it does it does very well. Great Bass lines, leads and percussive sounds are so easy to create. All of the additional Patch Points make it extremely modular and the modulation options are numerous. It has White and Pink Noise generator, which you need to patch into the VCF in via the Voltage Processor in order to control it's output

Although it was built to be less expenses that other Behringer Synths, the build quality is still very good. The Potentiometers are plastic shafts but very solid and very little wiggle. The knobs are large, firm with clear indicators showing where they are set to and very easy to adjust. As with the Original Kobol Expander the layout is clearly and logically marked.

Only complaint and it's really a pet peeve of mine, Behringer only supplies it with 2 short patch cables. This is a very patch oriented synth and you will need more than 2 and longer than the 2 they supplied, which don't reach from the far points to the other side of the Synth.

Bottom line, I am very glad I listened to others on my Synthesizer Forums and added this to my Synth Arsenal (it is an arsenal at over 35+ in my home Studio (Mostly Behringer's).

At this price it is a no brainer to add to anyone's Synthesizer setup.
Awesome gear!
This gear is perfect for any and all synths to expand the sound!
Music background: playing since 1986, I play multiple instruments and record on different mediums.
Liquid bass, on tap!
Great synth, especially when paired with a Neutron. Bass and texture all-night-long. Very cool. Even without patching, bass pours right out. Feature set is killer.
A new favorite

I really like this small synth. I've been able to quickly dial up (with a couple of patch cords) some classic lead sounds that I'd struggled to get out of other synths. I have 2 of these now, and since they play so well with other modules, one will go into my rack, and the other I'll keep in it's handy, mobile case. Thank you Behringer and thank you Sweetwater.
