Advanced Compact Monitor from Neumann

The Neumann KH 150 is a bi-amplified studio monitor with reference-grade performance that belies its compact size. This makes it ideal for both nearfield and midfield deployment in small-to-mid-sized control rooms. Neumann’s new 6.5-inch woofer, the result of over three years of intensive research and development, is integrated into a meticulously engineered 20-liter bass reflex cabinet, allowing this state-of-the-art monitor to achieve impressively deep and tight bass response down to 39Hz and a maximum SPL of 118dB; meanwhile, a specially designed 1-inch tweeter serves up crystalline clarity extending up to 21kHz. Powered, respectively, by 145 watts and 100 watts of energy-efficient Class D bi-amplification and assisted by Neumann’s Mathematically Modeled Dispersion (MMD) waveguide, these drivers deliver unerring accuracy over a broad sweet spot, while minimizing desk reflections.

A crowning technical achievement

DSP-driven electronics allow for the advanced features that modern digital signal processing has to offer, such as ensuring phase linearity for rock-solid imaging and facilitating room-adaptive calibration using Neumann’s cutting-edge MA 1 Automatic Monitor Alignment system. Whether you use the KH 150 in a stereo pair or combined with other KH series speakers for immersive surround monitoring, what you hear is what you get. The KH 150 benefits from the same design philosophy as do all Neumann studio monitors: ruler-flat linearity, vanishingly low distortion, no coloration, and smooth integration into any acoustical environment. It gives you what you want — and need — from your monitors: the ability to hear every minute detail of your recordings. This allows you to make recording and mix decisions with confidence, knowing that your mixes will “translate” to the world outside your studio.

Mixes that translate

Engineers at Sweetwater know that there’s no substitute for midrange clarity in a monitor. This is the heart of your mix, and it remains relevant regardless of playback system. That’s why, on inferior monitors, you can spend hours struggling to achieve a perfect balance and end up with nothing but frustration, listening fatigue, and a mix that doesn’t translate. The Neumann KH 150 takes the guesswork out of music production, making the process so much easier — and infinitely more artistic. The KH 150’s exceptionally linear phase response results in astonishingly clear and transparent midrange and maximum accuracy in the time domain, which can be heard in the monitor’s fine resolution of low-volume reverb tails. This is thanks to Neumann’s DSP-controlled electronics, which make possible sophisticated crossovers that circumvent the phase distortion generated by analog filters. The internal DSP also raises the bar for tonal consistency, as the KH 150 is spec’d to extremely low tolerances of less than ±0.8dB. Neumann’s punctilious engineering manifests itself in a stereo soundstage that is razor-sharp. Bottom line: you’ll find it’s easier to place vocals, bass, and solo instruments in a mix, allowing you to achieve an ideal balance that sounds great under any and all playback conditions.

Room-ready

The interface between your monitors and room is critical, and becomes more so the louder you crank the volume. Even the finest studio monitors can only be as accurate as your room acoustics will allow. In the physical realm, Neumann’s MMD waveguide generates an expansive sweet spot while negating reflective bounce back from your console or desk. But high-tech “smart monitors” such as the KH 150 with integrated calibration facilities can do much more to mitigate, or even eliminate, room problems (particularly when combined with judiciously applied acoustical treatments). The KH 150’s internal DSP is tightly integrated with Neumann’s optional MA 1 Automatic Monitor Alignment system to optimally adapt your monitors to your room’s acoustics and precisely calibrate them for your preferred listening position.

From rock to Bach — and beyond

With its powerful amplification, advanced protection limiters, robust low-frequency performance, and high SPL capabilities, the KH 150 is a perfect studio monitor for EDM, rock, metal, and urban genres; as well as film scoring and all applications that involve extended low-end and/or high-volume monitoring levels. The soundstage remains coherent even at high SPLs. But the KH 150 is equally adept at revealing the subtleties of a nuanced classical piece or acoustic jazz performance. Its universal versatility also makes it a perfect monitor for broadcast booths as well as ADR and voice-over work. The KH 150 is a crowning technical achievement in transducer innovation, but then, that’s what Neumann has been doing since 1928. Make the leap to truly world-class monitoring with the Neumann KH 150.

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Almost Returned Them! Glad I didn't!

Every review I had read painted these as extraordinary. However, right out of the box, they sounded like someone had put a blanket over them! I was really disappointed and was seriously thinking about how long I had to return these and get something better.

I initially tested them against my previous monitor sets, the Genelec M040 and Focal Alpha 65 monitors. Both previous monitors blew the Neumanns away in both clarity, definition and how well you can hear "into the mix." I even rotated placement with my previous monitors thinking it might help. No dice. Anyway, I had purchased the Neumann MA-1 calibration mic so I downloaded the (free) software and went thru Neumann's calibration process. By the way, the software will NOT work with the Avid Carbon interface.

After calibration, I took another listen using the exact same "test" tracks that I had used before calibration. Night and day difference!!! Even though my "home" studio has been acoustically treated with slanted walls, bass absorbers in the corners, and some wall foam, my room apparently was still causing huge issues with the response. (see attached photos for before and after calibration)

Lesson learned. Buy the Neumann MA-1 calibration mic and calibrate the monitors to your specific room, if you actually want to hear how wonderful these monitors can sound! I again, played the same "test" tracks and now the Neumanns blow away ALL my other monitors. I can now hear things in the Neumanns that I've never heard before and the clarity and depth is awesome!

NOTE: Please reference the attached graphs to see how well the software was able to "tune my room." The "dashed" line is before calibration. Note how much gain the room was causing around 100 to 400 Hz as well as how much loss (around 2kHz) the room was causing. The solid white line is after calibration. That explains a lot!

The best

First, a shout out to my advisor at Sweetwater - Chris Goldbach ----- for all of his advice and help.

The KH150 is a superlative monitor. The best objective, measurement tests and reviews of speakers/monitors are at Audio Science Review. The measurements of the KH150 are the best of any monitor/speaker he has ever measured. The frequency response is ruler flat (down to its 39 Hz level). And, the distortion levels are remarkable ----- in the realm of what good electronics achieve - until down in the deep bass, where the THD does rise but to a stil inaudible level.

I have settled on Neumann monitors for studio (I have eleven) and find them all to be excellent, but the KH150 is the best of the best. I purchased a second pair.............

Wonderful

I use these in my recording studio at TES Productions. Neumann audio engineers did an excellent job in the development of these. They are what studio monitors shoudl be - flat frequency response with low distortion. See the review and measurements at Audio Science Review.

Great Studio Monitors!!

Got the KH150s to replace/upgrade my beloved Dynaudio BM5 MKIIIs. The KH150s are simply amazing the whole frequency range. They add nothing to your recordings. Whatever you feed them, they are going to play it the way you recorded it. Meaning, a bad recording will show all its flaws immediately. A good recording will sound just great!! If you are looking for a very transparent/neutral studio monitor, then look no further and get the Neumann KH150s.

Nothing These

First, I would like to thank Chris Goldbach at Sweetwater for all of his assistance and advice.

Today I received the KH150's I purchased from Sweetwater. I already had the stands set up so was able to spend some time listening to them with a variety of music, including some that I have produced and am familiar with. I will be providing some more detailed information but here are some random initial thoughts.thoughts.

I have them set up for use with my new Audient 4816SE console. Interestingly, their grey and black are an ideal match for the new 4816 color scheme.

The build and finish quality is impecable, as expected.

They feel and seem about as large and heavy as I expected. Which is to say - right in between my KH120's and 310's.

They are located in the middle of the main room of my studio. The 150's are positioned 1.3 meters from my ears. In order to clear the top of the console, the middle of the 150's sit 25 cm higher than my ears. This is well within the vertical dispersion zone. I noticed no significant sound difference when I stood up.

With their specific placement, early side reflections are very minor, as are reflections from in back of the 150's. Early reflections from behind my back are virtually non-existant because of the configuration of the room, which is very deep and textured.

There is the potential for early reflections from the 3 meter high ceiling, but the fairly tight horizonal dispersion pattern of the 150's proved to minimize this a a substantial degree.

The top of the console slopes from the back to the front, so that the early reflections of the 150's from the top of the console hit my chest, instead of my ears.

After a bit of testing, I used one of the equalizer switches on the back of the 150's to decrease the bass by 4 dB, which happens to be what Neumann recommends for placement in the middle of a room.

Although I was excited to have these new monitors, the monitors themselves were not exciting to listen to. In fact, they did not sound like much at all. They simply pass through the sound of the recordings without adding or subtracting anything. Were such language not frowned upon as being unscientific, I would otherwise call them transparent, flat, dynamic and colorless. But since I do not want to be chastized, I won't. ;)

What struck me most about the speakers was - nothing. I found myself forgetting about them and hearing various aspects of the music...... like little things in the instrumentation of the songs - whisps of sounds that would never be heard in most systems.

Although today I did not A/B the 150's against my KH310's or 120's/750, it seemed to me that there was no obvious difference that I could pin down.

Looking at the 310's in the background, I expected that there might be some slight loss of smoothness in the midrange, since the 150 is a two way design. I listened for this but heard nothing in this regard. These little puppies sound like Amir's frequency response curve predicts ----- smoooooth. So smooth.

Using the 4816, there are five different gain controls in the chain (150 input trim, line input preamp gain, short fader, master mix fader and studio monitor gain). It was fun using these in combination, but there was no perceptable difference, regardless of the combination. (The 4816 is so clean). There was also not a bit of hiss at any listening level. Not a bit.

For a but of fun I listened to them at 4 meters and 6 meters distance. I will simply say that for me they are nearfiled monitors. I have other speakers (not monitors) for those distances.

From this short initial introduction to them, the 150's are quite simply everything that Amirs testing at Audio Science Review and the other reviewers established. I can do nothing but confirm.

I am in a state of great admiration of the Neumann organization. I cannot image all of the hard and intelligent work that went into making these monitors. For my use, I could want nothing more.
