Neumann KH 120 II DSP Powered Studio Monitor - Anthracite

Sells separately for $999.00 each

When Neumann introduced its KH 120 compact nearfield monitor, studio professionals listened up. After all, Neumann is the granddaddy of pro audio transducer manufacturers, having debuted their first microphone — the CMV 3 — in 1928. Now, the KH 120 II builds on the considerable success of its predecessor with across-the-board improvements: more power, an onboard DSP engine, deeper bass response, higher SPL capability, and even better resolution. The internal DSP power facilitates linear-phase crossovers and room-adaptive alignment with Neumann’s groundbreaking MA 1 Automatic Alignment system. As you would expect of a Neumann product, the KH 120 II is designed for unerring monitoring accuracy and, thanks to its impeccable build quality, will provide you with dependable service, session after session, year after year.

World class monitors for studios and home studios alike

World class monitors. Exceptional translation. The Neumann measurement microphone and software gave me a detailed analysis of my control room and revealed the bumps in frequency response I was already mixing in response to. Since adjusting the 4 band eq on the back of the monitors to account for my room's frequency response, the translation on my mixes have never been better. Can not recommend these monitors enough.

Monitor Search is Over. Perfection.

Wonderful monitors. Clean, tight, accurate. No flabby low end. No scooped hi-fi sound. No strident highs. Just an incredible presentation of sound. Imaging is stellar. An absolute joy to listen to. Surprised how minor EQ changes while mixing are obvious with these speakers. The MA1 software for listening position calibration was a breeze. I truly wish I would have had these awhile ago but didn't buy into the high priced monitor thing. If your on the fence, just try and buy. Its doubtful you'll send them back. Makes quick work of mixing for me. Absolutely love these things.

Punch well above their weight

This review is for the bundle of 2x KH120 II speakers plus the MA 1 microphone required for Neumann's Automatic Monitor Alignment procedure.

When purchasing any of Neumann's DSP studio speakers, you are also buying into Neumann's software ecosystem containing the MA 1 Automatic Monitor Alignment software. From historical online reviews, this software has had a development history. The Windows version currently available (v2.0.0.6537) worked well for me to accomplish its job once I took care of a couple environmental issues.

My first two attempts to perform the monitor alignment on my new KH120 II speakers failed. One issue was that one of the speakers would suddenly disappear momentarily from the network. The other issue was the presence of apparently marginal background noise given off by the fans in my audio workstation PC and its attached display unit.

So for the third attempt at monitor alignment I grabbed my spare Netgear switch and created an independent LAN not connected to the internet, to which I connected the KH120 II's. Then I grabbed my laptop (normally extremely quiet), installed the MA 1 package there, and connected its LAN port to the Netgear switch (laptop remained connected to the internet via its Wi-Fi). With these two setup changes, the monitor alignment procedure ran great. I saved a screenshot of the final result which shows the uncorrected response-in-room as well as the (much smoother) aligned and corrected response. This is good software but it is not that "automatic" in that each of the seven measurements taken during the procedure does require you to manually reposition the microphone in a different carefully measured position within the 3D space around your central listening position.

In purchasing the KH120 II's, another selling point for me was their S/PDIF inputs (on RCA for 75 ohm cables). It turns out that my audio interface (Lynx Hilo USB) can link its digital outputs to its main volume control knob. Thus, adjusting playback volume from the interface works exactly the same as for the analog XLR line outputs. Following the MA 1 alignment procedure above, I went back in and tweaked the "system level" of the KH120 II's from default 100 dB down to 80 dB (SPL for 0 dBu equivalent input). This quick and easy adjustment allows my audio interface's digital volume control to operate in the desirable range around -10 dBFS most of the time.

How do they sound? To appreciate the sound, I played digital tracks from many of my favorite popular, jazz, and classical music albums. My impression of the sound was always a total clarity, sensitivity, and transparency -- essentially a faithfulness to the recordings. This applies across the spectrum: no mud in the bass, no congestion in the midrange, no edginess in the highs. Whatever phase and timing alignments are performed during the MA 1 alignment procedure, they work. The separation and imaging of voices and instruments during playback is amazing to hear.

Here is a case where small studio monitors punch well above their weight thanks to modern technology and Neumann's design expertise.

I like some of my favorite songs production less now (That's how good these monitors are)

Ordered these and received them in 2-days, thanks to the AZ warehouse! Joey Marano is the Sales Engineer that helped me out and gave me a call after my purchase had shipped. Such a nice guy and was great to share a chat with Joey while making sure all was well with my Sweetwater experience.

Now, for my experience thus far. I am a person that does meticulous research. I've used the same monitors for 18 years and have been wanting a new pair for about 2-years now. I became more serious in the past year and watched/read a ton of reviews and informatics of many different monitors. After hearing some alternate potential options alongside these, I was left aghast. The small footprint of the KH 120 and their output quality is absolutely bonkers though. Listening to the same 8 songs (electronica, techno, metal, alt/rock, folk, neo-classical, hip-hop, and ambient) I was quickly impressed at the separation these speakers show in those mixes.
A couple of my favorite songs had artifacts that I had never picked up on before until I heard the songs on these speakers. So, I played them back on the other speakers and noticed those artifacts were mostly hidden. IMPRESSIVE! Now for the REAL test...How do my mixes hold up? Well, my second EP sounded quite solid. Great separation, really solid frequency coverage and very warm, just as I intended when I mixed it on a friend's high-end system. My first EP, which sounded solid on my old speakers, was absolute rubbish. Things that were balanced on that system, were so faint through these, I was laughing at myself. I spent some time, remixing those tracks and now they sound excellent through the KH 120 IIs...Bounced them to MP3 and put them in the car stereo (it's a stock Subaru system, so nothing high-end). To my surprise, or maybe not...The new mixes that I did on the Neumanns were night and day lightyears better than that original EP. Brought the mix downstairs to the home audio setup and again, the new mix just shines.

Hooking these up was quite easy and I followed the instructions to get them dialed in for my room. Once that was done, it's easy peasy. Get to work, have fun, and be wowed at how superb these little baddies are. 4-stars for now...reliability and durability will move these to a 5-star.
