Stunning Taylor Grand Symphony in Koa

The Taylor K26ce acoustic guitar pairs a head-turning design with divine sound for a sublime playing experience. Built around Taylor’s innovative V-Class bracing, this Grand Symphony–sized guitar produces a rich and airy orchestral tone with incredible detail, resonance, and projection. The K26ce’s stunning visuals stem from its exotic all-koa construction, gloss finish, premium appointments, and scooped, treble-side soundport cutaway, which gives access to the upper frets without diminishing tone. Cutting-edge Taylor Expression System 2 electronics provide a clear and accurate amplified sound along with feedback control for an ideal gigging instrument. Guitarists at Sweetwater are blown away by the looks and sonic distinction of the Taylor K26ce Koa Grand Symphony — a guitar you’re certain to love!

V-class bracing: a sonic revelation

Bracing is the internal framework of an acoustic guitar that helps shape its sound. Although X-bracing has been standard in acoustic guitars for over a century, it creates an innate conflict between two key elements of a guitar’s sound: volume and sustain. The guitar’s top (its soundboard) contributes to both. The flexibility of the top generates volume (projection), while its stiffness generates sustain. And with X-braced guitar tops, here’s where the trade-off comes in: when something is made stiffer, its flexibility is reduced (and vice versa).

V-class bracing changes all that. With Taylor’s V-class bracing, an acoustic guitar top can be both stiff and flexible — for more volume and sustain. V-class bracing provides stiffness parallel to the strings for more rigidity and, hence, sustain. Flexibility on either side generates the air movement necessary for robust projection. It’s the best of both worlds. This groundbreaking innovation also improves intonation — not only producing notes that are louder and with longer sustain, but are also more in tune with each other. Guitarists at Sweetwater are gobsmacked. But don’t take our word for it — pick up the superb Taylor K26ce and experience it for yourself!

A warm tonewood cocktail

As a tonewood, koa delivers a broad dynamic range with warmth and articulation that’s ideal for a wide range of playing styles, from delicate fingerpicking to aggressive flatpicked strumming. Its extended frequency range and rich, musical tonality have elevated it to premium status among tonewoods. Its potent low end can serve up a throaty growl, while sparkling treble notes ring out with bell-like clarity.

Cutting-edge Taylor Expression System 2 electronics

If you play plugged in, then you’re going to love the Taylor Expression System 2 (ES2) electronics built into your K26ce. The key to this fantastic system is the three-section proprietary pickup located behind the saddle. Because of where it’s positioned and how it’s integrated into the K26ce’s saddle, the ES2 pickup provides you with remarkably clear and accurate sound. In addition to a master volume control, a pair of tone controls lets you tweak your highs and lows to get the sound you need, and a discreet phase switch offers vital onboard feedback suppression.

Love at first sight and sound

They say the happiest days are when your children are born, while true, a close second is everyday when I pick up this beauty and begin to play. The look, the feel, the warm rich tones… time to stop writing this review because I could be playing right now!

Bright and chimey

Compared to other tonewoods, koa is bright and this one chimes a bit (similar to harmonics on an electric guitar) which is great for my playing style. I'm a sucker for inlaid fretboards, too. I only had to do a truss rod tweak to get the action where I want it. It looks good so my wife lets me hang it in the living room so it gets a lot of play time.

Taylor K26ce

The insatiable lust that I felt for this since model first seeing one in Taylor's quarterly publication had me feeling like a kid at Christmas when I finally pulled the trigger. Upon arrival, letting the box acclimate for 24 hours as recommended by Sweetwater due to Winter temps was excruciatingly difficult but well worth protecting my new companion. The artistry & craftsmanship is everything one would expect from Taylor and at this price point I expected nothing less - Flawless!! I had read that the sound port better affects the listener rather than the player and I would agree. Her voice is more soft than my other acoustics of varying body sizes but supremely well balanced. I have had several high end acoustics (None quite at this price point) and have never had one play so effortlessly out of the box. The neck is extremely comfortable and the action beautifully low - Not sure if that is direct from Taylor or as a result of Sweetwater's attention prior to shipping.

Other than price, my only concern would be the lower volume the player hears when playing unplugged, which I equate to the right words being whispered in one's ear rather than shouted. Anthony Giraldi and his team were top notch, making it oh so easy to look forward to our next conversation.

Review update

I reviewed this guitar earlier and have something to add. After 3 months there were noticeable small bumps showing up on the back of the neck. I contacted Taylor, sent pictures and was informed that the bumps were being caused by contaminates under the finish. They said they could repair the neck if I sent it back to the factory and paid shipping both ways. Not a great response on a brand new expensive guitar that has a problem that occurred during finishing. I contacted my sales engineer who started a dialog with another Taylor service rep and also said that Sweetwater would replace it as defective even though it was out of the 60 day trial period. The second rep tells me that I should sand the neck, or he would make arrangements with the closest repair center to deal with it. I do a lot of my own luthier work because I live in a remote area and the nearest decent music stores are over 2 hours away, but to ask a customer to sand the neck of a new guitar with a factory defect is ridiculous. The closest repair shop would be a three hour drive one way. If the guitar had shown up with the defect I would have returned it immediately and I doubt that it would have passed Sweetwater's inspection. I had a PRS that developed a problem after a year and PRS offered to pay for shipping both ways to make it right. Now THAT'S service. Anyway, I wasn't thrilled about any others that I could have traded it in for and didn't want to spend any more for an instrument that now had some bad karma associated with it so I sanded the neck. I played it for awhile but it had lost it's magic and the inlay had started to pull up in two spots so I sold it. This was my 4th Taylor and it will be my last. I guess this is what happens when a luthier turns control of his brand over to the employees who are looking at the bottom line instead of the guitar maker's reputation. Sweetwater gets an A+, Taylor gets an F.
