A 20-fret Acoustic with Historic Gretsch Attitude

With its period-correct body shape and traditional hardware placement, Sweetwater guitarists agree that the Jim Dandy acoustic guitar is a stunningly authentic replication of Gretsch's classic mail-order model. The secret to matching this iconic tone is laminated tonewoods, which provide the warmth and sonic punch that's expected of the company's revered backyard strummers. Additional vintage features including all-nickel hardware and open-gear tuning machines further supply an unmistakable appearance, while ensuring solid performance reminiscent of the instrument's original fixtures. Porch pickin', travel jamming, you name it — Gretsch's classic "Rex" has been through it all. Rest assured, adding a Jim Dandy to your instrumental arsenal is a one-way ticket to take on any musical scenario with antique-infused confidence.

Sturdy laminate construction and X-bracing

A laminate wood top, back, and sides ensure the Jim Dandy bears true acoustic tonal power, without the extra weight on your shoulders. Inside the soundhole lies carefully designed X-bracing, adding extra durability to your instrument while keeping vibrations stable and resonant. Because of the guitar's wood grain surface, you won't be sacrificing charming looks either. Whether you plan on playing onstage, in the studio, or by the back door, the Jim Dandy maintains a sharp, historic appearance in any musician's hands.

Traditional nato neck

The Jim Dandy's smooth nato neck combines a dovetail neck joint and a C-shaped profile for maximum maneuverability, not to mention a semi-gloss finish for lightning-fast movements along the instrument's walnut fingerboard. Speaking of which, fretboard side markers and white dot inlays keep fretting accurate during jam sessions while maintaining a recognizable, authentic appearance.

Vintage appointments supply a classic porch-pickin’ feel

Like its iconic shape and tonewood design, the Jim Dandy’s onboard hardware and fixtures pay homage to its age-old instrumental ancestor. A genuine walnut bridge with a compensated saddle pair with a synthetic bone nut for reliable string positioning and authentic vibration transfer. Likewise, onboard nickel hardware and open gear die-cast tuning machines ensure solid intonation support and an authentic vintage look. It’s all topped off with a smooth semi-gloss finish — ensuring a smooth feel and advanced handling that comes as close as possible to the original model.

Gretsch Jim Dandy Parlor Features:

  • 6-string acoustic guitar inspired by the iconic “Rex” mail-order instrument series
  • Lightweight laminate tonewoods develop strong projection and clarity characteristic of old-timey flat-top models
  • X-style bracing pattern for enhanced vibration and resonance
  • Color-matched semi-gloss nato neck with smooth C-shape profile and dovetail joint
  • Easy-playing 12-in. radius walnut fingerboard with 20 vintage-style frets
  • Walnut bridge with compensated saddle and synthetic bone nut for reliable string positioning
  • Complementary nickel hardware and open-gear die-cast tuning machines complete the classic aesthetic

Reviews

Awesome little guitar.

This is more than a campfire guitar. So much character. This thing is amazing for delta blues and all country and roots music. Mine has slightly high action but that doesn't bother me because it is still pretty easy to play and sounds really authentic with a slide. Best $ I have ever spent.

My studio buddy.
As a kid, I never had costly acoustic guitars but I always had some kind of beater acoustic handy for practicing or songwriting or taking to the beach or whatever. Jim Dandy here fills that need for me, but it's much better built than my beaters of old. It came to me in flawless condition with a very good setup. All I had to do was put my favorite strings on and tune up. Nobody will ever mistake its tone for a Martin and it doesn't have a lot of volume, but that's not what I bought it for anyway. I just wanted a solid little around-the-house guitar, and that's exactly what it is. It gets five stars from me for not being pretentious!

Quality for the price
I am 75, retired and took up guitar 2 years ago with an inexpensive Chinese Stat knock off. It has been more than adequate for me to learn off of the internet and Youtube. Consider myself a beginning intermediate player.

I was looking for an acoustic to have for a different sound and something to grab off the stand at a moments notice. I also thought a parlor size would be ideal for my purpose. I also did not want to put a lot of money into it.

I decided on the Gretsch Jim Dandy parlor for its looks and the decent reviews for all the Gretsch models in this price range.

The positives. I received the guitar 3 days after ordering. It was in its original factory box packed by Sweetwater inside a larger box with much large air bubble padding. No damage from shipping.

I was very impressed with the quality of the construction for this price. No fret sprouts or edges, finish very clean and nice color on the woodwork.

I did find the setup much higher that what I was use to on my electric, but I think this is partially the nature of the species. I did tighten the truss rod and did some light filing on the nut slots to lower the action a little. The next time I order strings, I will try 11s as they would be slightly lighter that the 12s it came with.

I will say that the sound is good, but with the smaller body definitely not for someone who is a performer or otherwise particular about the tone. Also the shorter neck position makes it difficult to play above the 12th fret.

However, I feel I got a good instrument for the price, and it will fill my needs as a learning instrument. I have found that after playing it, my electric seems much easier to play. Whenever I upgrade I will look for a larger instrument.
