Distorted Phase-drenched Cacophony

The Warm Audio Jet Phaser is an authentic re-creation of a popular, similarly named guitar effect pedal from the 1970s. Not sure which stompbox we’re talking about? Remember the funk-infused modulated bass sound that Larry Graham used with Sly and the Family Stone? Yeah, it’s that sound. Fire it up, and you’ll experience a gooey swirling sound that no other device can replicate, thanks to the inclusion of a one-of-a-kind fuzz circuit. The Jet Phaser boasts the same set of controls as the original, with knobs for Jet Level, Mode, Resonance, and Slow Rate, plus Effect/Normal and Fast/Slow footswitches. From gentle modulation to distorted phase-drenched cacophony, you’ll dig Warm Audio’s Jet Phaser.

Authentic 1970s-era phase effect

Phasers were ubiquitous in the 1970s. From Eddie Van Halen’s swirling guitar textures to Herbie Hancock’s trailblazing keyboard stylings, phasers were everywhere. And who could forget Sly and the Family Stone’s Larry Graham? His pioneering “thumpin’ and pluckin’” bass techniques have influenced entire generations of slap-pop electric bass stylists, including a bevy of us here at Sweetwater. Warm Audio’s Jet Phaser is a spot-on reincarnation of the device Larry used to achieve his attention-grabbing modulated bass tones, both with Sly and the Family Stone and later with Graham Central Station.

Standard phase-shifting to fuzz-soaked modulation

The Warm Audio Jet Phaser contains six modes, with two labeled Phase and four labeled Jet. The two Phase modes produce standard phase effects, with the first giving you subtle modulation and the second serving up a pronounced phase-shifting sound. The four Jet modes are where things begin to heat up, however. These modes infuse the phase effect with delicious fuzz textures, thereby unleashing an electrifying array of dirty modulated sounds:

  • Bright Fuzz/Shallow Phase
  • Bright Fuzz/Deep Phase
  • Dark Fuzz/Shallow Phase
  • Dark Fuzz/Deep Phase

And since you can control your output with the Jet Level knob in the Jet modes, the Jet Phaser makes a great dirty boost!

A level of expressiveness that rivals an electric organ

If you’re a sucker for expressive effects, then you’ll find a lot to love about the Jet Phaser. First of all, its Resonance control, which is available in all six modes, gives rise to all sorts of animated filtered textures. Secondly, its Slow Rate knob enables you to set your modulation speed. But that’s just the beginning! Stomp on the Fast/Slow footswitch, and the effect ramps up to max speed. This gives you the ability to ramp the effect speed up and down gradually, much like a rotary speaker, giving you a level of expressiveness that rivals an electric organ.

Warm Audio Jet Phaser Features:

  • Authentic re-creation of a similarly named guitar effect pedal from the 1970s
  • The same effect Larry Graham used to achieve his funk-infused modulated bass sound
  • One-of-a-kind fuzz circuit produces a gooey swirling sound that no other device can replicate
  • Contains 6 modes: 2 traditional Phase modes and 4 fuzzed-out Jet modes
  • Resonance control gives rise to all sorts of animated filtered textures
  • Slow Rate knob enables you to set your modulation speed
  • Fast/Slow footswitch gives you the ability to ramp the effect’s speed up and down like a rotary speaker
  • True bypass switching preserves your tone when you’re not using the effect

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Wow, just wow.

First, a word of caution: If you are looking for the EVH phase sound or something similar, there are better alternatives such as the MXR Phase 95 which I highly recommend. Also note, the Jet Phaser is a gigantic box. It is 10 1/2 inches wide, 6 3/4 inches deep an about 2 3/4 inches tall. It also weighs in at several pounds (5 ish?)

HOWEVER! If you have a love fair with phasers you have got to buy one of these, the range of tones is incredible and it is VERY responsive to an upstream EQ. At the time I am writing this review it was on sale at Sweetwater for $ which frankly is an absolute steal of a deal for a pro grade studio quality tool. This thing can make a wide range of classic sounds, the controls are very well designed and the build quality is 100% professional grade.

I bought this specifically for one song I am recording and my other phasers (EHX small stone, mxr 95, mxr deep phase) were just not doing what I was looking for: That light, airy 70s style shimmer with good depth while maintaining clarity (You need EQ upstream too :-)

While playing with this device before the actual recording session I was able to use the "Jet" fuzz to create some other gnarly tones like the comping guitar in Billy Thorpe's "Children of the Sun"

If you love phasers you simply must buy one of these right now, that's why you are reading this, right?

Thanks to Derek Spaulding at Sweetwater for always being there for my studio, top notch service!

Awesome Tones, but...

This pedal produces some unique tone choices to work with. I'm totally happy about that. I was looking for the recipe to capture that Ernie Isley "That Lady" guitar tone and this pedal definitely does that. But I agree with a previous reviewer that it's now the 21st Century and it would be nice if this pedal had 2 indicator LED's. One to show when the effect is activated and one to show when the "Fast" option is activated. Maybe there is a way to get the pedal modified to incorporate those features??? I'm not sure...

Great Addition as a Side Piece

Outstanding pedal for the price and quality. Built like tank with easy operation. It's huge by today's standards so mine sits on the side of a pedal board. There's a ton of headroom when running at 18v. The Phaser is old school and simple to dial in. As a bonus you have several fuzz pedal phases to explore as well as a fast/slow switch. Overall 5 stars!

Old school greatness done right

This pedal is great for both guitar and bass, and probably for some keyboards too. I have wanted the original for years and finally got the Warm Audio reproduction. First and foremost, this pedal is big, heavy and extremely solid in build construction. This pedal also looks nice. Sound wise, I love this thing. I mainly play bass and this thing rocks with all my basses. The fuzz/distortion is extremely well done. It preserves enough bass without sounding muddy allowing great definition in your playing, getting dirty as heck. The phase settings can go from fairly mild to full out warp speed spacey sci-fi sounding. With my fretless, sliding harmonics (search youtube for Tony Franklin sliding harmonics) sound great with this pedal. I think this pedal works equally well with bass and guitar which is very nice since I play both. Now I seriously want to get the Warm Audio Mutation Phasor II and their Foxey Tone Box Fuzz.
The only thing that would be helpful is a led for each switch, especially for the fast/slow switch. A minor other enhancement would be an overall volume control to boost the sound while using less fuzz.
Great pedal, well done.

This one goes to eleven

I've had this Jet Phaser for about a year and a half now. I bought a second one for my guitar teacher who is a fan of recordings done with the original Roland. This is perhaps one of the few Warm Audio products that I can afford. The two phaser settings can go from mild swirl to a nice semi-aggressive backdrop of tremulous wobble. The other four settings can be made gritty and "in your face" to completely wtf crazy. It is still working great. I have a friend who rebuilds 70s era reel to reel and multi-track items from the past. His primary approach is to replace most of the capacitors with new high quality parts. Warm Audio has a reputation for using quality caps and this device upholds that claim. The overall aggresion lends itself to some great bass guitar flavor as well. Fun in a box. Yes I would buy it again. I am continually amazed at the number of musicians who are unaware of Sweetwater. To these people, I give the Sweetwater stickers that I keep in my goodie bag. Better than a business card and mine do end up where they belong. In the hands of new customers to be. Thanks for the great sales support most efficient shipping department I have ever encountered.
