Vintage Fender Style with Raw Gold Foil Tone

Inspired by the catalog store instruments of the vintage era, Fender’s Gold Foil series seamlessly merges garage-rock swagger, vintage Fender flair, and effortless modern playability. This guitar’s warm-sounding mahogany body takes a wild leap from the typical Jazzmaster formula, with a trio of Gold Foil mini-humbuckers designed to capture the chimey, articulate, and raw flavor from countless catalog-order instruments from the ’50s and ’60s. Still, while old-school budget guitars inspire the Gold Foil Jazzmaster’s tone, playability is a different story — this guitar’s ebony-topped maple neck, robust ’60s “C” profile, vintage-tall frets, and 9-inch radius boast a high-performance feel your typical Teisco could only dream of. Top it all off with a stability-enhancing Mustang bridge and a Bigsby-licensed B50 vibrato, and the Fender Gold Foil Jazzmaster takes Gold Foil tone to an entirely new level of feel and performance.

Gold Foil pickups straight out of a vintage catalog

Gold Foil pickups are a true underdog story in the history of the electric guitar. Originally found on import and department store instruments in the 1950s and 1960s, many high-level players scorned these pickups not for their tone, but because of the budget instruments they were attached to. However, as the ’60s garage rock movement began to bloom, young players started to adopt Gold Foil-equipped instruments out of sheer necessity. As it turns out, the classic low-output spark of the Gold Foil served as the perfect foundation for the era's loud, energetic, and unrefined rock music, later influencing 6-string icons such as Ry Cooder to hot rod their Fender instruments with a Gold Foil pickup. More than a half-century after the fact, Gold Foil pickups now rightfully reside among the pantheon of timeless pickup designs.

A powerhouse of playability

While the rest of the guitar sports a serious vintage vibe, the Gold Foil Jazzmaster’s neck detours from the budget guitar playbook with an ultra-high-performance feel. Starting with a piece of rock-solid maple carved into a chunky ’60s “C” profile, the Gold Foil Jazzmaster’s block and bound ebony fingerboard offer high-class refinement and a smooth, silky feel. Moreover, 21 narrow-tall frets in a 9.5-inch radius afford you effortless modern playability up and down the fingerboard — even when pushing out multi-step bends on the fingerboard’s upper register.

Bigsby-licensed B50 Vibrato

The Gold Foil Jazzmaster mixes up the standard Jazzmaster design with the combination of a Mustang-style bridge and Bigsby B50 Vibrato. Like the original Jazzmaster setup, this pairing results in effortless warble and surfy flutter, but the increased break angle also goes a long way to enhance sustain. What’s more, the bridge forgoes the standard notched-saddle, individually height-adjustable vintage Jazzmaster bridge for a Mustang-style bridge — a modification that’s been around nearly as long as the Jazzmaster.

Fender Gold Foil Jazzmaster Electric Guitar Features:

  • Inspired by the old-school style and raw tones of the garage rock era
  • Mahogany offset-style Jazzmaster provides a slightly warmer tone than alder or ash
  • Maple neck carved into a robust ’60s “C” profile, then topped with an elegant ebony fingerboard, binding, and block inlays
  • 21 narrow-tall frets in a 9.5-inch radius for full-featured modern playability
  • Mustang-style bridge for enhanced stability
  • Bigsby-licensed B50 unlocks surfy warble and deep vibrato
  • Jaguar-style per-pickup switches for a touch of style and expanded tonal options
  • Triple Alnico V Gold Foil mini humbuckers deliver the spark, chime, and grit of their vintage inspiration, but with added weight and heft

A Keeper!

What's is this?

A mahogany body?

Candy Apple red burst?

A Bigsby?

A bound neck with block inlays??

Jaguar-esque pickup switches?

And THREE mini humbuckers wrapped in gold foil?!?

I don't know who at Fender thought this would be a good idea, but they were right!!

Mine was PLEKed by the good people at Sweetwater. And it plays perfectly.

Tons of good tones. Great stability. Nothing quite like it.

I've got a few offsets, but this is one of my faves. It has plenary of gain, but syntax's crystal clear.

There is NOtHING quite like this. Get it while you can.

I am in love with this instrument

Truly a winner. Looks and feels amazing, sounds great, the tonal options are amazing. The gold foils are mini humbuckers which I am new to, but now love as they are clear and full without the muddy lows. The pickup switch allows for 7 positions, and I normally do not like middle pickups but this is all usable and great. At first I thought it was a very heavy instrument, but now I am super into it. The mahogany body means SUSTAIN, and the weight gives me confidence, you can really put a lot of energy into the guitar and it feels stable and reliable. Neck is great, tone isn great, color is great, all around great guitar. And of course my amazing rep Aaron Regenold was the best and helped me with this purchase. Never played another guitar that feels like this and sounds like this, and I am super into it!

Definitely something to own

I'm not sure how "limited" this version is, but if there is an end date for production, you really should get one. Is it a Jazzmaster? Well, yes - sort of. Is it a Jaguar? Well not exactly. Actually, to my mind it is a well thought out hybrid. But, this has to be one of the most versatile sounding instruments available now, and possibly, ever. Even if you aren't a Fender person, this instrument is a heady piece of musical equipment. The tonal options are remarkable. The build quality is exceptional - especially for this price point. I really don't think there is much this guitar can't do. It's not a Strat, it's not a Les Paul and it's not a Tele. But, being its own animal, it pretty much can do many of the things all three of these staples can. The neck is smooth, the fret board is top notch and the controls work flawlessly. The pickups---ahhh- the pickups: wonderful. I even found the setup just about spot on right out of the box, although I did lower the high side a tad. I own more guitars than I should, but I have to honestly say this is one of the best of them. Fender has really done something special here. Nice work, Fender!

An Odd Bird That Can Fly High!

I applaud the "Mad Scientists" at Fender who came up with this idea. At first glance, it appears to be like a mutant Silvertone out of an old catalogue, but it is much more. The closest I can describe is a cross between a Les Paul and Jazzmaster, which is expected, given the Mahogany body and Ebony fretboard. The resonance, craftsman ship, and playability of this guitar are superior to many recent Fender releases, some higher priced. The guitar neck has a smooth, solid feel. I have large hands, so I appreciate the slightly bulkier neck. The sound is unique, but good. Some are almost Strat-like. Bridge alone has good punch.

As always, Paul Lea handled my purchase and shipment flawlessly. Thank you. I will buy from no other Sweetwater staff.

NICE!!!!!

These are REALLY nice! A tad on the heavy side, but I expected that with a mahogany body and a Bigsby. The pickups are great! They can twang really well on the bridge and bridge/middle settings. All pickups sound great individually. I guess the weakest positions would be neck/middle, or all three on at once because that tends to kill the highs. Neck pickup alone is similar to a Strat-neck sound. These are humbuckers, but you are still getting a very Fender-ish sound. My guitar came pretty much flawless. My one complaint is that the Bigsby arm is a little loose and shaky, but I can probably adjust that out. Otherwise NO issues with the guitar at all! Ebony fretboard is a refreshing change from rosewood. Fretboard inlays are done immaculately. Fret dressing is better than most US models I've had (WAY too many pointy fret ends on the US models!!!) Neck is on the chunkier side, which I much prefer over a too-skinny, Modern C neck. Paint job is beautiful. Just a great guitar for the price!!!!

It’s impossible to imagine a world without Fender guitars, and if you’re like many of the guitarists at Sweetwater, then Fender not only made the first guitar you ever bought " they made the last one too!
