Reinventing the Classic Jazzmaster

Worlds collide in the Fender American Performer Jazzmaster solidbody electric guitar. At first glance, it's a great-looking Jazzmaster — but a closer look confirms that it's got a Stratocaster vintage-style synchronized tremolo tailpiece. Which means you can expect that voluptuous Jazzmaster tone, with the extended vibrato range the Strat-style tremolo offers. And speaking of tone, a pair of Yosemite single-coil pickups delivers the iconic Jazzmaster tone with a bit more output than usual. Factor in the Greasebucket tone circuit and newly designed ClassicGear tuners, and you've got an impressively flexible gigging guitar with the Fender American Performer Jazzmaster.

Yosemite single-coil pickups

Created for the American Performer series, the Yosemite single-coil pickups found on this Jazzmaster deliver the clarity and detail vintage Jazzmaster tone is known for. They're wound slightly hotter than vintage JM pickups and feature flat-staggered pole pieces for exceptionally balanced output across all strings.

Strat-style synchronized tremolo bridge

We've seen a lot of different Jazzmasters come through Sweetwater, some with the classic offset vibrato tailpiece and some with hardtails. It's not often we see them with a Strat-style synchronized tremolo, but that's what you have here on the American Performer Jazzmaster. Complete with bent saddles, this vibrato gives you more bending range than a traditional Jazzmaster. If you love vibrato and always wished your Jazzmaster could bend just a bit more, then this may be the guitar for you.

Greasebucket tone circuit = no more mud

Have you noticed how your note definition can suffer when you roll your tone knob back? Of course, there are lots of tone circuit designs out there, but the Greasebucket tone circuit in the American Performer Jazzmaster lets you roll off highs without affecting low frequencies. That means you can get mellow, subdued tones without your tone becoming muddy and indistinct. Many guitarists don't use their tone control very much — but maybe that's because they don't have the Greasebucket tone circuit.

Fender American Performer Jazzmaster Solidbody Electric Guitar Features:

  • Classic Fender offset design with a Strat-style synchronized tremolo
  • Yosemite single-coil pickups deliver classic Jazzmaster tone with slightly more output
  • Greasebucket tone circuit maintains low-end clarity when rolling off highs
  • Vintage-style ClassicGear tuning machines
  • Modern C-shaped neck with satin finish plays fast and smooth
  • Single-action truss rod adjusts at the headstock for easy access

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

Note: While demo items from Fender do not include the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation warranty, you can shop with confidence knowing that this item is backed and covered by Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Amazing!

This is definitely an amazing guitar! No bridge/tremolo issues like the original. Feels and plays amazing! Gigging with it without any problems!!

Great Jazzmaster!

Hard to improve on this one. Fixed the main problem with this model--the bridge. Strat bridge is a
huge upgrade. I wish they would have made it a 2-point, and used locking tuners, but I knew I wasn't
going to do a lot of heavy whammy work on this guitar, so no issues. Fit and finish are excellent.
The PUPs and tone circuit are really great sounding. The Vintage White finish is beautiful. Pictures
don't do it justice. As always Sales Engr. Derek Senestraro went the extra mile on this purchase.
That guy is GREAT!

Simply outstanding!

This guitar has become the epitome of my vision as a child of one day owning an incredible guitar that can do it all. I could not be happier with it. This instrument is certainly built to last through it all. The construction is flawless and the hand-wound pickups sound incredible through my AC15. All my electric guitars are Fenders but this is my first USA model. Super excited to start gigging with it. It"s everything I was looking for and more.

Great Guitar -- None of the JM Oddities

Let me start by saying this is a fantastic guitar. The fit and finish are spot on. The pickups really sing. It's resonant, and the tone is super versatile. I am personally a big fan of the simplified controls and the standard strat bridge. I haven't had any problems with tuning stability. The greasebucket tone circuit is really fantastic, and allows for a lot of subtlety and nuance.
My only two critiques: A treble-bleed circuit in the volume pot would be nice. And I don't understand why this guitar is $... more than the Performer strat, given that it doesn't have the fussy JM bridge or any of the electronics that would make a normal JM more expensive.
All in all, a fantastic guitar.

A Real Jazz For a Decent Price - But Beware The Trem System

I was very excited to learn that Fender had released a new, relatively affordable American-made line of guitars – the American Performer Series, and I had waited to upgrade from the MIM Fender Jazzmaster HH I had bought last year (and had made several subsequent trips to the local guitar repair shop for neck, bridge replacement and other ongoing issues). I worked with the always helpful and informative Mike Defraties at Sweetwater to procure this new Jazzmaster. (I"ve also owned a "61, so the bar is set a little high, to be fair.) Generally, I have returned to really enjoying this underrated model, it"s always been my favorite guitar.

Pros – very good fit and finish for the money, action is good on a real rosewood fingerboard without fret burrs or jumbo frets being too cumbersome, and tuners and knobs are solid feeling (American Performers have polyurethane finish, but it looks great to me). The stock Yosemite pickups do have a pronounced traditional Jazzmaster sound with a little more output, but…

Cons – why did Fender go and wreck the traditional tone with a Strat tremolo system? The resonant sound of the Jazz is compromised by this bright bridge; if Fender wanted to save some money they should have just built a stop tailpiece. I wouldn"t have minded except – it has not stayed in tune when I use the wham bar! Tuning was an issue anyway, mainly since the neck adjustment was so loose when I received it, but using the tremolo is still problematic and may not be an option playing live. I"m not into Van Halen dive-bombing songs, but I guess I either got a lemon or it"s the curse of the Jazzmaster bridge.

The solution was to add a couple of more springs to stiffen the trem system, and I got Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound pickups installed to boost output and smooth out the mids in the sound (I play hard rock, not surf music). Would I buy it again? Well, yes, love the vintage white color (maybe a bit too yellow to be authentic), playability and (now) sound, but for the money asked for an "American-made" instrument Fender needs to Beta test their stuff better before it hits the market. Ironically, my MIM Jazz never went out of tune with the traditional Jazzmaster tremolo system.

It’s impossible to imagine a world without Fender guitars, and if you’re like many of the guitarists at Sweetwater, then Fender not only made the first guitar you ever bought " they made the last one too! From building the first mass-produced solidbody electric guitars and basses in the 1950s to creating some of the most influential amplifier designs in history, it’s no wonder why Fender is one of the biggest names in the business. As one of the world’s largest Fender dealers, we have countless guitars, basses, amps, effects pedals, and accessories in stock and ready to ship, whenever you need them. We’re always getting our hands on their latest creations, and there’s nothing we love more than to tell our customers all about them! So, whether you’re looking for your first axe or a Custom Shop creation, make sure to give your Sweetwater Sales Engineer a call at (800) 222-4700.
