The JX Reissue You’ve Been Waiting For

The Roland JX-08 Boutique Series sound module brings you the authentic sound of the classic JX-8P synthesizer that first made waves back in 1985. And it’s more easily programmable than the original ever was, thanks to its full set of hands-on controls derived from the PG-800 programmer unit. All 32 original JX-8P presets are here to get you in the mood, plus 111 new presets to show off its potential for modern productions. Complete with 17 onboard effects, including juicy JUNO-106 chorus and classy SDD-320 reverb, the Roland JX-08 Boutique Series sound module offers more creative potential than ever.

Revisiting a classic hybrid synth

The original JX-8P broke new ground in 1985 with its hybrid analog-digital architecture, and the JX-08 Boutique Series module authentically re-creates the punch and power producers loved about the original. One thing producers didn’t love, however, was the minimal amount of control the JX-8P offered for programming sounds on the fly. Sweetwater is pleased to report the JX-08 Boutique Series module offers plenty of hands-on control, essentially giving you all of the controls offered by the original PG-800 programming unit right on the front panel.

17 onboard effects including beloved JUNO chorus

With dual oscillators, HP and LP filters, and cross modulation capability, the JX-08 offers plenty of range to create pummeling bass, searing leads, and evocative arps — and that’s before you even dig into the effects section. In addition to the classic JUNO-106 chorus and reverb from the Dimension D SDD-320, you have plenty of sound-mangling options, including pitch shifting, lo-fi effects, and many more.

2-part multitimbral potential

With the option for 2-part multitimbral operation, the JX-08 Boutique Series module is ready to handle bass and lead duties simultaneously. You can also tap into its 2-part nature with the powerful onboard sequencer, supporting two parts with up to 64 steps each. Motion recording allows you to record complex parameter movements along with your patterns. A random pattern generator is ready to provide instant inspiration. And with storage for up to 128 patterns, you have plenty of room to save inspired chord progressions, bass lines, and leads.

Powerful portable music production

Because the JX-08 module can be powered with four AA batteries and has a built-in speaker, you can sketch out song ideas anywhere. You’ll also appreciate the JX-08’s robust construction — its tough metal panels and metal-shafted sliders feel great and stand up to the rigors of the road. You can also pair the JD-08 with Roland's K-25m Boutique Series keyboard unit (sold separately) for 25-key, velocity-sensitive playability.

Reviews

Evolutionary leap for Boutique
From a hardware standpoint this synth is really dialed in. All the knobs, buttons, faders, and switches are sturdy and tight, nothing fiddly about it at all. The finish is perfect, and I really feel like I got a proper poly synth for my money.

20 voices is no joke, even with polyphonic sequencing. And OMG it has Polyphonic sequencing. If you're getting voice dropping from this, I would bet you have some room to thin out your mix in general…

I really like the features- great LFO with a delayed onset, two envelopes, the ability to modulate your mixer with an envelope, just lots of really good thoughtful things to have on the front panel. Menu diving is minimal and intuitive. The ability to layer and split parts is great- especially if you feel like your sound is a little thin, you can layer the same preset twice and maybe tweak the filter or fine tune on one of the parts. Subtle changes work wonders.

Finally the presets. This is an 80's dream, a synthwave monster and I love it. If I never make a preset on it I'm still good to go, but there's room to make some incredible psychedelic stuff with this.

So glad I got it! It is a great addition to my little Boutique family.

Probably the Best Synth in Roland's Boutique Lineup and I love the JU-06A but this beats it!
First, I've been using and programming Synthesizers since 1972 with my first ARP 2600 so I do know my way around most of them.
I never owned the original JX8P when it was introduced in 1985, I was too involved with my Yamaha DX7. However I did get to work with one that a friend of mine owned and I was sort of sorry I had the DX7.
Anyway fast forward..Roland has hit a home run with the JX-08. It is everything that the original JX8P was and more.

Pros:
Full set of hands-on controls, taken from the PG-800 programmer unit from the original JX8P. This makes this Synth so easy to program.
20 Voice Polyphony, not that I can play 20 notes at a time but when creating effects it sets this Synth way up there.
It's Bi‑Timbral. This means the two Parts in the JX‑08 can be split or layered across the keyboard and can be used to create some of the lushest pads you've ever heard as well as complex sounds that would be impossible to obtain using a single Part.
Arpeggiator (JX8p did not have one)
Sequencer (JX8p did not have one) which is 2 part, 64 steps, 8 notes per part (Polyphonic)
17 new Effects including a new designed Chorus
256 Preset Slots
Velocity Sensitive & Aftertouch
Solid Build
Small Footprint (perfect for my Workstation Setup yet still the controls are all very easy to use and not too small)
5 Pin MIDI In/Out
Clock In
USB Port for connection to Power or Computer
Some Great Third Part Sound Packs like the ones from Ultimate Patches
Battery Powered Option - For me not really a big deal
Built in "Speaker" - For me not really a big deal

Cons:
If you are new to Synths this is a little more difficult to learn that many others on the market but with time and the abundance of online demos you will learn how to use it if you are patient.
No others really except if I want to be picky, Roland should include a USB Cable instead of the cheap set of batteries.
I think that their K25M Keyboard Dock is over priced, you are better off with any other MIDi Interface/Keyboard from AKAI, Arturia or Novation among other. These will give you much more versatility especially if you have other Synths or Modules.

This for me is not really a Con just a point you should know, if you are thinking that the JX-08 will sound exactly like the Original JX8P it doesn't. Oh it's very close in many ways and with some tweaking it can be almost identical but it was NOT Roland's intention for it be an exact Clone. The one biggest difference is in the Sound/Voice emulations. The original used a technology known as Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB), this JX-08 uses Analog Circuit Modeling (ACM). These are 2 very different approaches to how the Synths makes their sounds and by this very nature they would never sound identical. Also you should know that the Original JX8P's had several Revisions in its life from 1985-1989 which made each Revision sound just a bit different from previous models, so which one can you really compare this JX-08 to?
Bottom line, don't try to compare just enjoy how powerful, beefy, melodic and lush this Synth sounds.

Most missed this
This synth is really 2 ACB JX-8Ps. Bi timbral and as fat as hell. The JX-8P was probably the fattest sounding synth of the mid 80s, and here you have two, that you can combine 2 presets or split them across the keyboard. Because the JX-10 wasn't a well-regarded synth, certainly no classic, this recent module by Roland seemed to pass everybody by. But if you like chunky synth leads, sweeps and arpeggios, you'll be lucky to find one fatter than this.

No JX-08 justice
It was during some random video exploring the Roland JX-08 features did i find out this Roland Boutique model contains three different filter types. By accessing the Part mode this is where the Low Pass Filter Types option is located. These are the same filter types which are used in the Jupiter-Xm. #1 is the default Roland SH Style, #2 is a Moog Ladder step 24db/oct Filter. #3 is a Sequential Circuits Curtis Style Filter. No other Roland Boutique model synth has these filter options. I guess that's why this one is a new Boutique model.
JX-08 Inspires
Bought this because I needed a very small synth to sit on my stage piano for live shows. Perfect for the job. I just MIDI it up to my stage piano. For such a small device, this packs a punch with its dual oscillators, dual part 64-note sequencer, built-in FX, arpeggiator etc. With its ability to be powered via AAs or USB, makes it great for capturing those moments of inspiration while traveling. Worth every penny!

Simply put, modern electronic music wouldn't exist without Roland. Many of the electronic musicians here at Sweetwater cut our teeth on TR Rhythm machines and fondly remember programming our first TB-303s. We owe a good part of our careers to this amazing and innovative company. It's been fun to watch and grow right alongside Roland, as they've introduced wave after wave of revolutionary keyboards, digital pianos, and more. For example, Roland's V-Drum Kits continuously redefine the possibilities of electronic drums, beginning with SuperNATURAL technology to the latest Prismatic Sound Modeling. We're huge fans, and we'd love to tell you all about them. Whether you want a pocket-sized synth or a cutting-edge video mixer, if Roland makes it, then Sweetwater is 100% behind it.
