A Pedal-sized Tribute to the Stack that Ruled the ’80s

At the dawn of the 1980s, a certain iconic British amplifier manufacturer released a searing high-gain tube head that all but defined the decade's hard-rock and metal golden age. TC Electronic’s JIMS 800 preamp pedal packs that amp’s full-stack fury down into a compact, pedalboard-ready box! This pedal’s 2-channel design makes it a breeze to unleash dramatic dynamic shifts, with a robust 3-band EQ and Boost/Level/Gain controls to dial in each channel’s tone to your taste. Additionally, a click of the dedicated Boost footswitch allows you to supercharge a particularly poignant lead or lick with added authority, and the rear panel’s Pre/Post switch even gives you direct control of where the Boost lies in your signal. Finally, flip the pedal over to the rear panel to be greeted by a smattering of additional controls and features, including a tone-sculpting Presence pot and an official Celestion cab-sim-equipped DI out for whisper-quiet tracking sessions.

Genre-defining hard-rock and metal tone

While the roaring classic-rock bite of TC Electronic’s JIMS 45 scored a direct hit with Sweetwater’s old-school fanatics, the ferocious JIMS 800 is another beast entirely. The JIMS 800 is modeled after a legendary tube amp from the early 1980s that helped high-define the high-gain edge of the hard-rock and metal era. If screaming, dive-bomb-laden solos and dirt-drenched rhythms are a regular part of your tonal vocabulary, you'll feel right at home with the JIMS 800. What’s more, the JIMS 800 voice is far from stock. This preamp pedal specifically replicates a specially modified iteration of its amplifier inspiration, boasting tone stack tweaks, second-stage gain modifications, and a clarity-enhancing treble bleed. It all adds up to a pedal that admirably covers all your ’80s 6-string needs, from tight, punchy cleans to gut-punching blasts of high-gain rage.

Footswitchable boost with dedicated rear-panel controls

Looking to crank up the grit? Simply stomp on the JIMS 800’s Boost footswitch to add some extra heat to your tone! Moreover, the “Pre/Post” switch gives you the power to choose where the boost is placed in your signal chain. While it can be placed at the end of the JIMS 800’s circuit for more volume and authority, Sweetwater guitarists find that cranking the boost up in the “Pre” section results in rich, saturated overdrive tones on even the mildest of pickup configurations.

A comprehensive set of functional features

Apart from serving as a spot-on amplifier emulation, the JIMS 800 is loaded with a vast array of quality-of-life functions to aid you in your practice, recording, and gigging endeavors. First up, the 2-channel design features fully independent tone-shaping options on each respective channel, with a dedicated footswitch to instantly swap between raucous lead tones and more restrained rhythms. In addition, the JIMS 800 boasts a dedicated DI for easy recording and performance, equipped with an official Celestion 4 x 12-inch G12-65 cab-sim IR emulation for the full dynamic response of a classic amp stack.

TC Electronic JIMS 800 Preamp Pedal Features:

  • Expertly modeled after the sound of an iconic high-gain tube amplifier from the ’80s, along with several mods common to the originals for extra heat
  • TC Electronic’s cutting-edge Ampworx modeling technology captures every detail of the original with minimal latency and a sweeping dynamic range
  • 2-channel design with independent channel controls allows you to instantly swap between 2 of your favorite configurations
  • Rear-panel global Presence pot to further dial in your tone
  • Dedicated DI and headphones outputs for easy recording, performance, and practice
  • Built-in official Celestion 4 x 12-inch G12-65 cab-sim IR to give your sound a true-to-life space and response

Exceeded all expectations

It really is a JCM800 in a box. I am upset because it is so good it could almost replace my $ V4 The Sheriff Amp pedal if it had a few more features. The video reviews you see of this on the YouTube do it exactly all the justice it needs. It really sounds stellar. Send the DI straight to a PA and you got a perfect mic'd tone. The only minor con about the pedal is the headphone out sound is eh. I would recommend this more for people looking for their same rig tone but smaller for cramped small, or underpaying shows where room and how much equipment you lug matters. It's just crazy how good this is for the price.

Better than expected

I had been considering an "amp in a box" solution for some time, but shyed away from them because of price. When this went on sale, and after watching a few videos reviews, I decided to pull the trigger. I was impressed by the video reviews I saw, but once I played it myself I was completely sold.
I'm the type of player who likes to dial in a nice, thick, chunky yet chimey, overdrive sound that can clean up with volume roll off...and that's my core tone. I don't need several different amp/cab models. The Jim's 800 fills this role perfectly. I absolutely love that they just built in all the most desirable Marshall mods. The treble bleed and gain mods really shine and help get that nice saturated but tight tone and feel. It's super articulate. Plenty of gain on tap, and even when using quite a bit, you can still make out every note of open chords. The Presence setting works very well and adds sparkle without harshness. The pre/post boost option is very welcome and useful. Then there's the cab sim. Wow. What a perfect choice with the GT12-65 impulse response. It's just, exactly what you want a Marshall to sound like.
I will be totally fine using this in place of a physical amp, and in certain live situations, actually prefer it. As far as recording, to me it sounds better than the Marshall-y amp models I've tried with plugins. Home run, TC Electronic!

My Back & Wallet Win Again!

My back wins because it doesn't have to bear the weight of carrying around a full size amplifier head which of course will be in a case for added weight, and my wallet wins because I don't have to spend an exorbitant amount of money to obtain said amplifier head, since I purchased this outstanding TC Electronic JIMS800 pedal through Sweetwater.

I have owned a 1978 JMP 50 MKII and JCM800 back in the 90s and early 2000s, and own Carvin and Peavy builds based in similarities.

When I fired up this pedal, I immediately recognized how the tone circuit reacted like the 'real' thing. I really found the gain staging realistic and impressive. Especially for something coming out of a pedal at this price point. But I suppose I better get used to such innovations. I have no complaints about the IR cab out. It sounds faithful to the source. I own SEVERAL examples.

All told, it's exactly what I was hoping it was going to be, and I'm going to make good use of it. I tried my baritone guitar with it and it sounds glorious!

It's like a full stack in a box

Finally getting the tones I've been looking for forever. The DI out with the simulated cab sounds awesome, and it sits perfect on my pedalboard. It's like having a full stack wherever you want to jam. The clean channel takes pedals very well, and the built-in boost is actually really nice to have. Amazing piece of gear for the price!

Awesome Pedal

I really enjoy this pedal. It creates some great JCM800 tones. I have mainly used it for direct recording into my interface. I also use it with headphones for quiet playing. I gave the pedal 5 stars because it has met all my expectations. I was able to get my old guitar tone I had when I had a Marshall JCM800 amp in the late 80's and early 90's.
