Versatile, Modern Bass with Active Tone Shaping

The Squier Contemporary Active Jazz Bass refreshes the iconic J Bass for modern players — and at a sweet value too. Available in a range of cool finishes, complete with matching headstocks, the Contemporary Active Jazz Bass features refinements made with players in mind, like its slim and fast "C"-shaped neck profile and 12-inch fretboard radius to match. Most impressive are its active electronics with a bass/treble boost control for expansive sound shaping. Complete with a pair of SQR ceramic humbucking pickups, the Squier Contemporary Active Jazz Bass is ready for practically any musical setting.

High-output ceramic humbucking pickups and versatile controls

The Squier Contemporary Active Jazz Bass delivers vibrant J Bass tones via a pair of ceramic humbucking pickups. Voiced for punchy lows and clear, articulate highs, these pickups offer ample output. And with the addition of active electronics, you've got the potential to shape your tone for any mix. Deviating from the traditional J Bass control set, the Contemporary Active Jazz Bass features controls for master volume, pickup blend, master tone, and bass/treble boost.

Modern bridge maximizes your tone

You'll notice that the Contemporary Active Jazz Bass boasts impressive resonance and sustain, and a big part of that is its redesigned bridge. And not only does this bridge maximize resonance and tone, it's also easier to restring and allows for precise intonation.

Slim "C"-shaped neck and 12-inch fretboard radius

While the feel of a bass guitar's neck is a matter of personal preference for any musician, many players at Sweetwater like the feel of the Contemporary Active Jazz Bass's slim "C"-shaped neck profile. Topped with a 12-inch-radius fretboard, it offers easy playability and a fast, slim feel.

Squier Contemporary Active Jazz Bass Features:

  • 4-string electric bass guitar
  • SQR ceramic humbucking pickups for punchy lows, clear highs, and high-output tone
  • Active electronics with controls for master volume, pickup blend, master tone, and bass/treble boost
  • Modern bridge enhances resonance and makes restringing easier
  • Fast-playing slim "C" neck profile and 12"-radius fretboard
  • Classic J Bass control set with individual volume knob and master tone knob

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

Note: While demo items from Squier do not include the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation warranty, you can shop with confidence knowing that this item is backed and covered by Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Really a Squier ?

I have been playing guitar and bass for well over 40 years..played great guitars and bases, and junk ones too..Always stayed away from Squier just because. This one changed my mind completely. Fit and finish were excellent, the roasted neck is smooth, accurate, and just gorgeous. Fret work is as it should be and better than a lot of Fenders I have owned and played. Pickups sound good, and just lack a little definition, but that's what EQs are for..just really a nice bass and I would highly recommend it to gig with, record with, or if you are just learning to play…

Sweetwater always sets one up really nice and this one was no exception. It was packed well and shipped fast. And their customer service is the best in the business. Thanks Ryan Sloan for taking care of me.

Amazing bass

I purchased the flat black on black version just to see what it was like. I've played this next to the most exspensive basses at guitar center and this comes out on top every time. I've owned it for just over a year with 2-3 shows a month and the matte finish between the pick ups (where my fingers slide off the top string) is already worn down to wood. I love it, but some people might not like the durability of the finish. It also eats 9v batteries like candy. This is my first active bass, so I can't compare that to other basses.

Great 4-string Bass

I had an older 5-string Active Squier Jazz Bass HH. I got it second hand and it has it's issues, but plays and sounds decent. When it came time to get a new bass, I looked around a bit and decided on getting another Squier. Well, this one completely blows the old one out of the park! It is beautifully crafted and plays and sounds great! It was set up perfectly from Sweetwater. It holds its tune well. I often just have to take it out and it's ready to play! There were a few minor flaws. A drop of glue was on the edge of the pickguard, but that scraped right off. The output jack is a little scratchy depending on the cable used. Minor spots on the finish of the neck that, while not necessarily rough you can feel the texture. But these are all nit-picks when you truly are getting a lot of guitar for this price!

Surprising!!

My wife thought the bass looked cool and bought it for me as a gift. I acted happy ofcourse, but I've been playing American made Precision and Jazz basses for years. I decided to give it a whirl and with a little amp adjustments (low and high mids on full) GK Fusion, the tone came alive. Out of the box with the action set low I was amazed at the feel of the neck. No buzz and quite frankly better than my American jazz. The only think keeping it on the bench is the weight. It will leave a dent on your shoulder if you're doing a 3 or 4 set bar gig. BUT, that aside it's my best sounding and playing bass I own!
