Classic Vibe '70s Jazz Bass V

First introduced in 1960, the Jazz Bass has withstood the test of time to become one of the most played and recorded instruments in modern music history. The Squier Classic Vibe '70s Jazz Bass V celebrates this heritage in an incredibly affordable instrument that aspiring musicians will appreciate. With its sleekly contoured offset body and fast-action maple neck, this J Bass is incredibly comfortable to play and lets you pull off extremely tight runs and grooves with ease. Of course, it also delivers the legendary punchy bass sound you can only get from a pair of single-coil J Bass pickups.

The ubiquitous 5-string

As roundwound strings and brighter bass sounds became popular in the 1970s, a number of modifications were made to the J Bass to accommodate the changing tastes in music production; most notably, maple fingerboards and a back pickup moved closer to the bridge. And later when 5-string basses came into vogue, the Jazz Bass — a staple of funk and fusion — was a natural for adding a low B string. The 5-string Jazz Bass and has since become ubiquitous on stages, in orchestra pits, and in studios worldwide.

Timeless single-coil bass sound

Although the versatile Classic Vibe '70s Jazz Bass V sounds great in just about any context, it really shines in musical settings that demand that classic scooped, growling bass sound and benefit from the extended range of a tight, responsive low B string that feels like a natural extension of the instrument. With the Classic Vibe '70s J Bass V, you can achieve a myriad of tones by blending the volume of both Fender Designed Alnico single-coil pickups to taste. Whether you play jazz, rock, metal, blues, country — or any fusions thereof — the Classic Vibe '70s Jazz Bass V will deliver the tones you need.

Shaped for comfort and performance

One of the things that made the J Bass an instant hit with working bass players was its unique offset-waist body shape. Perfect whether playing standing or seated, the classic Jazz Bass contoured body will make those marathon gigs and sessions much more comfortable. With its slim C-profile neck (1.875" wide at the nut in the 5-string version), this instrument was originally designed to appeal to jazz bassists. The slender neck not only facilitates the fluid execution of fast, complex bass lines; it's perfect for any musical style — which is why you hear the Jazz Bass in every genre of music.

Join the ranks of Jazz Bass players

Pick up the Squier Classic Vibe '70s Jazz Bass V and you've got affordable entrée into the company of some of the greatest bass players of all time. World-renowned bassists such as Jaco Pastorius, Geddy Lee, Marcus Miller, Larry Graham, John Paul Jones, and Victor Bailey all chose the J Bass as their go-to axe. Sweetwater's advice: If you want the iconic round and punchy, growling J Bass sound along with effortless playability — and an amazing value, to boot — you're on the right page. Pick up the Squier Classic Vibe '70s Jazz Bass V and drive your music with legendary tone.

From our online Guitar Gallery that allows you to see and select the exact instrument you want to our 55-point Inspection process and our in-house guitar techs, we take the guesswork out of buying your next guitar online.

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

Note: While demo items from Squier do not include the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation warranty, you can shop with confidence knowing that this item is backed and covered by Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!

Exactly What I Wanted!

I am a multi-instrumentalist / one man recording band so I was in the market for a solid 5 string bass that wouldn't break the bank, and let me just say.. I've only had this for a few days now, but WOW this thing is sick! I play a baritone guitar tuned to B standard (sometimes drop A) so I wanted a 5 string for the low B so I didn't need to modify the nut of a 4 string for heavier strings, and all that fun stuff. I have always loved J-Basses, and this one really delivers! It's got that growl you'd expect from a Jazz Bass, every note is very clear, and it plays like a dream! I'm not a huge fan of gloss necks (more of a satin guy) but this one is really smooth to play and it doesn't sound like I'm rubbing my hand on a basketball court when I play.

Like I said it's only been a few days, but I'm super stoked to start recording my album in a few months with it, and all of the music to come after that! Just want to throw out there that Sweetwater is the absolute best, and my dude Garrett is the man and made sure I preordered it so I didn't miss out on the new shipment! It got here quick, and it was packaged so well that I think it'd be easier to break into Fort Knox than to damage the bass during transit!

All in all, I'm a happy customer!

Solid choice

I chose this because I needed a 5 string on a budget. The reviews were good so I went with Sweetwater due to their customer service.About sweetwater, they had the bass to me on time and its setup was good. The neck felt great, reminiscent of an old 62 Pbass I used to play back in the late 70's before it was stolen. Im a retired pro and I am in love with the depth of tone this gives me.Im playing through a fender amp and this gives me all the tonality & responsiveness that I could ask for. Mine is Black and I would use this for any musical situation. Its a beast without any mods necissary.
Music background: Recorded and toured proffessionally for over 30 years.

Great Jazz bass!

Nice jazz bass at a reasonable price! Played well right out of the box, and actually weighed less than my '79 US Pbass.
Music background: Bass player since the early’70s.

Best bang for your buck for a 5 string bass, period.

I'm a gigging musician and I bought this bass to have another 5 string to replace an older Ibanez and I couldn't be more pleased. I have been playing Fender basses for three decades and I am honestly shocked at the quality and the tone of this bass. It was delivered with perfect intonation and the setup was spot on. I would be skeptical about ordering a guitar online from anywhere but Sweetwater as this is the third bass I have ordered from them and they have all been perfect right out of the box. Do yourself a favor and don't overlook the Squire because you won't be disappointed!

8 months later, and loving it even more.

I've been playing this bass at rehearsals and at home ( I get lazy to get my Kiesel out of the gig bag at home, partly because this Jazz is such a good axe). Besides all the compliments I gave this bass last May, I forgot to mention these Pups rule, loud and clear. Great for playing live, or rehearsing at home for ht e next service
Music background: Amateur bass player at Chocolate Bayou Cowboy Church, and any jam band that will have me.
