Gibson's Acoustic Workhorse

A true icon in the world of acoustic instruments, the Gibson Acoustic J-45 quickly earned the title of "The Workhorse" shortly after it was introduced in 1942. This round-shoulder, dreadnought impressed musicians with its full and balanced expression, warm bass, and excellent projection — much of which came through subtle changes to the bracing of its forefather, the J-35. The J-45 Standard features a solid sitka spruce top and mahogany back and sides for a mind-blowing blend of punchy treble, midrange heft, and low-end lushness — a truly unique sonic signature that countless performers have fallen in love with! And when you plug in, the active LR Baggs VTC pickup system delivers amazing pure acoustic tone. Whether you're strumming on the porch or onstage, the J-45 Standard is a stunning addition to your guitar collection.

Choice tonewoods for incredible tone

Known as "The Workhorse," the Gibson J-45 body style is among Gibson's most beloved. This particular workhorse features a superb blend of tonewoods, giving you rich, strong sound — day in, day out. The J-45 Standard features a solid Sitka spruce top for presence, while premium mahogany adorns its back and sides. Other touches include traditional hand-scalloped X-bracing, a compound dovetail neck joint, and multi-ply top and single-ply back body binding.

Eminently playable neck and fingerboard

The Gibson J-45 Standard's high-grade rosewood fingerboard is personally inspected and qualified by Gibson experts before it enters the company's factories. It's a resilient and durable wood, making way for a balanced and stable fingerboard, and giving each chord and note enhanced clarity and bite. The dot inlays on the J-45 are made of genuine mother-of-pearl and are added to the fingerboard using a special Gibson process that eliminates gaps and doesn't require fillers. What's more, the J-45 Standard's fingerboard boasts a rolled edge that's lightly beveled, which enhances the instrument's smooth playability.

Robust, natural sound onstage

The Gibson J-45 Standard comes with LR Baggs's popular VTC acoustic pickup system, a popular choice among acoustic guitarists at Sweetwater. This system features a low-profile under-saddle transducer that enhances the coupling between the pickup and the guitar for a robust, lively, and natural acoustic sound with excellent dynamics and delicate high end. Combined with an onboard preamplifier with an unobtrusive and removable volume control that is mounted just inside the soundhole, the VTC gives your J-45 Standard the amplification you need, with zero compromises for tone or convenience.

Gibson J-45 Standard Acoustic-electric Guitar Features:

  • The classic acoustic workhorse delivers incredible playability and unique tone
  • Solid Sitka spruce top offers great projection and tone
  • Solid mahogany back and sides offer warm, round sound
  • LR Baggs VTC electronics transfer every nuance of your tone to your PA or amp
  • Softened fingerboard edge adds increased playing comfort
  • Mother-of-pearl dot inlays
  • Grover Rotomatic tuners

A “Red” Spruce top!!!

I'll never ever get tired of telling people this guitar has a "Red" spruce top! That is, a Sitka spruce top, that is red!! Bahahaha! In all seriousness, this guitar is allllll business when it comes down to the tone . They don't call the J-45 "the workhorse" because it sucks, but ohh quite the opposite my 6 string pickin' friends. This thing just rocks for whatever you throw at it. Whether banging out cowboy open chords, soft finger style licks, or country chicken pickin' Merle Haggard bends this guitar just delivers the goods so dang well. I love the cherry finish, and is perhaps the reason why I chose this one. The top is so bright and vibrant it's hard to capture its luster and figuring with a camera, as it does not do it justice under a lens. The guitar itself is near flawless except for a tiny little spec of something under the finish near the bottom edge. It's so small one might need a magnifying glass to see it, but it is there. This guitar also desperately needs a setup as the action is what I would describe as, very high, at an hair over .1". The "Gibson sound" as it is referred to, that this guitar embodies is the acoustic guitar sound we all hear in our heads, players and non players alike. It's perhaps the most recorded instrument in the history of modern popular music, and I see why that is. The harder you hit this guitar the more it growls back, and the headroom is very high as this guitar is difficult to overpower. The guitar is noticeably louder than my other acoustics. This is my second Gibson in 2 months the other one being a Les Paul slash standard, and they are both absolute banger guitars. Gibson Montana, and Nashville are absolutely knocking it out of the park, and making some of the best guitars today than they ever have. I love my new j-45 and hope it will continue to improve as it ages.

Absolutely killer guitar

I've only had my J45 Standard for a week, and I'm in love already. My other acoustic is a Martin 000-18. The Gibson brings something completely different to the table. My Martin is more balanced across the frequency spectrum, and the Gibson is more raw and bold. Both amazing. The Gibson comes with a medium action setup, I'm going to get a setup to get the action lower, but the sound of this guitar is awe inspiring. Highly recommend!

Gibson J-45 Cherry

Excellent and fast service via my Sales Engineer Jake Barker! I ordered the guitar on Thursday 7 Oct and it arrived in Florida on 9 Oct. I couldnt be more thrilled.......I've bought other guitars from Jake at Sweetwater and its always been a smooth process to include discussing types of music we play and different sounds from different guitar models. I'm extremely happy with my J-45 although I may change the strings as I'm not sure about the sound of what comes on the guitar. This was a Demo model, I've bought demo's in the past as well and they always arrive as described! Thanks again Jake!! You privided an outstanding service and extra fast delivery!! HAPPY 246TH BIRTHDAY US NAVY from a Retired Navy AO Chief!
Thanks

Gibson j45 cherry

Killer guitar!.. Had a professionally set up done and applied a tone-rite on it for a week. It is killer!!!!... Great lows... mids and highs...each note is separated and distinctivley defined. Well balanced guitar with great sustain!!! ..OHHHHH and I forgot to say it is stunningly beautiful! Nothing like a Gibson cherry stain...nothing like a good Gibson acoustic!!!!! "Only a Gibson is good enough"!

Thankgod for Nitrocellulose

First off shoutout to my sales rep Brad Dicarlo and Sweetwater. They helped get my j45 fixed up and playing better as it didn't seem right out of the factory. Second like I said at first I really didn't like the guitar but between Sweetwater helping out and some age on the wood it seems to be opening up just enough while still maintaining that gibson compression and darkness that other brands seem to never be able to achieve. Ive had martins, Taylors and guilds, on the acoustic side and fenders, Gibsons, and one prs on the electric side and ive got to say I will be returning to gibson on both fronts.. There's just something about guitars built the old fashioned way with proper dovetail joints and nitro finishes on both acoustic and electric. I feel like a lot of folks rag on gibson for not being consistent the way a PRS, Fender or a Martin may be consistent but the problem with consistency is It has NO magic. Every Gibson ive ever played has felt and sounded different but that also why I love them more than probably any other brand of anything period.
