Big Sound From a Small-bodied Guitar

Looking as great as it sounds, the Takamine GN20-NS acoustic guitar delivers distinctive sound and performance. At Sweetwater, we've always been amazed by Takamine's consistent quality and attention to detail. The first time you play the GN20-NS, you'll be impressed by its warm, detailed sound and light, lush delivery. Dark-toned, yet bursting with overtones, the GN20-NS's quiet tone lends itself especially well to fingerpicking. Extremely comfortable, the GN20-NS's slim satin-finish neck provides excellent playability. Extremely comfortable, the GN20-NS's slim satin-finish neck provides excellent playability. You'll love the Takamine GN20-NS acoustic guitar!

NEX body combines performance and playability

A proprietary body shape developed by Takamine, the GN20-NS's NEX body style is essentially a scaled-down jumbo. Extremely comfortable to play (especially for smaller players) the NEX body style brings a silky balance to a guitar's tone that lends itself especially well to vocal accompaniment. The NEX body style, while small, will still provide you with full-sized sound.

Solid cedar top and mahogany back and sides are a magical tonewood combination

Sweetwater knows that the choice of top wood can make or break the sound of an acoustic guitar. For the GN20-NS, Takamine chose a solid cedar top. Chosen as much for its look as its tone, solid cedar has an articulate and mellow sound with excellent projection. It's a great balance for the full sound of the mahogany back and sides. And because it's a solid-topped instrument, the tone of your GN20-NS will only get better with enhanced harmonics and greater tonal balance as the years go by.

Takamine produces guitars of amazing quality, sound, and playability

The Takamine GN20-NS acoustic- guitar benefits from a half-century of Takamine guitar-crafting knowhow. Launched in 1962 at the foot of Japan's Takamine mountains, Takamine has been designing and building acoustic guitars that are seen in the hands of some of music's biggest stars, including Glenn Frey, Bruce Springsteen, Bruno Mars, and Toby Keith. With quality and value as guiding principles, Takamine's instruments employ the finest tonewoods and construction techniques — something you'll discover for yourself as soon as you pick up your GN20-NS for the first time.

Takamine GN20-NS 6-string Acoustic Guitar Features:

  • Solid cedar top and okoume back and sides produce a warm and detailed sound
  • Slim satin-finish mahogany neck provides great feel and playability
  • Rosewood fretboard is comfortable and smooth

Surprising Good For The $$

I purchased a Takamine GN20 for a young family member who is ready to graduate to a full-sized instrument. I am happy to say that the GN20 is a really well-crafted instrument and for the money, delivers a great sound! The neck contour is very friendly, intonation is dead-on, fretwork is clean, and the body shape is comfortable. As for the sound, the guitar is well balanced (a little light on the low end compared to a Martin dread - but hey! at 1/5th the price who's gonna complain?) and surprisingly big. I didn't expect the cedar soundboard to produce such an articulate sound, but it gets the job done!

As so negatives, there aren't any, really. I had to work the string slots in the nut a little to improve the action at the 1st fret, and I lowered the saddle just a bit a to get the action at the 12th "just right", but neither adjustment was a big deal. The neck relief was perfect - no adjusting required. The guitar came without a gig bag, which is my only real complaint - but Takamine offers a nice padded one (I would have preferred a package deal).

All in all, this guitar is a great choice. It will encourage the player to pick it up and make some music. Highly recommended!

Great guitar for a first time player and beyond!

I've been a musician for a long time but this is my first guitar. I was originally looking for something with a mahogany top for looks but after doing a bit of research, settled on cedar for what I read would be a warm, balanced response. Even better - the cedar looks amazing! I've never really been a fan of spruce top guitars. They just look so plain to me and the cedar has a bit of color and really nice grain. I first heard a Takamine guitar many years ago and made a mental note that I liked the way it sounded. Fast forward to 2020 and I bought the GN20NS sight unplayed. I intentionally chose a guitar without electronics because I rarely hear really good built-in pickups. I wanted to choose my own when the time came (LR Baggs M80 is on the wishlist). The split bridge is nice, and though I haven't restrung it, I imagine I will appreciate it being pinless. I'm not sure why this guitar isn't more popular compared to the GD20 as I believe it has a better sound. This guitar sounds great and is easy to play even without having done a setup on it. It will last me a long time before I might feel the need for something different.

Best kept secret

So I picked up one of these used as a campfire guitar... wanted a cheap beater instead of playing my Martins (00-15 and D28). I played every under $500 guitar in the shop, including Yamaha"s (never a fan of the tone, although solid instruments), Recording King, Ibanez, Washbourne, Alvarez (I was a fan in the past) and several others, being open to anything that sounded good. Honestly, I had a poor impression of Takamine and thought they made cheap guitars. But this one really sung, both with finger picking and hard strumming. I also like that it is a mini-jumbo just to add some variety to my current mix. Nothing can match the tone of a Martin, but that is obviously another price point. For under $500 category, this is a great performing guitar that really works for me and my style of play!
