The Definitive Modern British-voiced Guitar Speaker

Celestion's V-Type is the definitive modern British-voiced speaker — sweet and warm, with enough vintage-tinged growl to remind you that it's a Celestion. The G-12 New V-Type delivers this familiar sound, but eschews its predecessor's heavy ceramic magnet for a lightweight neodymium one. At Sweetwater, we've found this guitar speaker to exhibit an incredibly balanced sonic signature. Clean, it's superbly clear and defined, with a pleasing upper-midrange chime and gentle high-frequency sparkle. Driven, it absolutely sizzles — your leads will sear and sing with a level of articulation and note separation that will satisfy even the most discerning of players. If you want to reinvigorate your guitar amplifier, the lightweight Celestion G-12 New V-Type will inject it with a vintage-modern British tone that's guaranteed to please.

Celestion G-12 New V-Type Speaker Features:

  • 12-inch vintage-modern British-voiced speaker
  • Neodymium magnet is almost 50% lighter than its predecessor's ceramic one
  • Yields a superbly balanced tonal signature that imparts a vintage musicality to your tone
  • Clean sounds are clear and defined, with a pleasing upper-midrange chime and gentle high-frequency sparkle
  • Overdriven sounds sear and sing, with out-of-this-world articulation and note separation

Great guitar speaker replacement

Bought two of these Celestion 16 ohm Neo V Type 12" speakers to replace the Longhorn and Vintage 12" speakers in my Paisley covered THD cab, and they sound great. Dropped the weight of the cab by 8+ LBS which makes transporting this cabinet easier now as well. To me it's a good investment in my BACK and sound. And as usual a great transaction with Sweetwater and of course my sales rep Bob Mondack.

Fantastic replacement speaker for Blackstar HT-5R MkII

I ordered the Neo V-Type to replace the house-brand speaker that came in my HT-5R MkII. I concluded that I wanted a speaker upgrade after swapping a ceramic V-Type from my DSL40CR into the Blackstar and hearing a nice improvement- more sizzle, less ratty sounding. The downside of the ceramic V-Type was the bit of extra weight was quite noticeable in the Blackstar, so being my "portable" amp, I decided to go with the Neo version instead (which actually weighs out to be a couple of ounces lighter than the original HT-5R MkII speaker).

Celestion G-12 Neo V-Type

Dear Reader,

Does this Chinese-made speaker sound better than the best sounding guitar speakers such as, for example, the EVM12L (Classic or Black Label) speakers? No.

Does it sound better than the rest of countless Chinese-made Celestion speakers? VERY DEFINITELY – and over many years, I tested/tried practically all of them. The Celestion production moved to China during 2002 and 2003 and after that only the Heritage, Blue/Gold and Creambacks were made in the UK and now perhaps even some of those are Chinese-made. Unlike their original UK-made counterparts, these Celestion's "Chinese cousins" (although their prices remained the same) mostly sound very harsh and uninspiring (some of them sound truly 'vomitogenic') and are very prone to all sorts of speaker failures.

Celestion does not indicate at all that the vast majority of their speakers are made in China, although this great-sounding G12 Neo V-type is an exception and has "Made in China" printed on the side of its neodymium magnet cover. I have two original Celestion Copperbacks, which were made in the UK (I have no idea where they make them now). The Copperback (250 watts) is the only RECENT Celestion speaker I know of that sounds as smooth and good as this G12 Neo V-type (70 watts).

Sonically, in comparison with EVM12L's, I would award it 4 stars, but since its weight is only 4.2 lb [an EVM12L is 16 lb and if you have 2 EVM12L's in your combo amp – that combo may be your chiropractor's dream], I score this speaker 4.5 stars.

BTW, if you have a combo amp such as the PRS Archon 50 or Archon 25 with the absolutely horribly sounding Chinese G12T-75 speaker, just replace it with this G12 Neo V-type speaker and you probably first won't believe the extent of the sonic improvement!
