Dual Mic Mount for Stereo Pairs and More

The FlexBar from Royer holds two mics on a single stand, but it goes above and beyond the traditional stereo bar. While the FlexBar certainly does allow for stereo pair configurations such as Blumlein and ORTF, it also facilitates other creative dual mic positions that Sweetwater studio engineers find handy. For example, being able to mic the top and bottom of a snare drum or the soundhole and 12th fret of an acoustic guitar from a single mic stand — with this accessory, positioning is easier than ever while saving precious studio floor space. Made from aircraft-grade aluminum, the Royer FlexBar is also ready to work in concert with your Triad-Orbit accessory items and accepts most microphone types.

Raising the stereo bar

With its engraved gradient centimeter markings, the Royer FlexBar can provide precise microphone placements for traditional spaced pairs, ORTF, and Blumlein stereo mic configurations. However, it also allows you to do things like simultaneously mic an acoustic guitar and a vocalist — from a single mic stand. Get creative with the Royer FlexBar, and you may be surprised by its applicability.

Royer FlexBar Dual Microphone Utility Mount Features:

  • Dual mic utility mount for mounting 2 mics to a single mic stand
  • Made from aircraft-grade aluminum for lightness and stability
  • Engraved gradient centimeter markers for exact positioning of mics for spaced pair, Blumlein, and ORTF stereo mic configurations
  • Enables creative and useful miking techniques such as snare top/bottom, singer/acoustic guitar, and more — all from a single stand
  • Compatible with all Triad-Orbit accessory items
  • Finished in matte black

Been Waiting For Something Like This

I frequently record acoustic guitar, and I own a couple of stereo bars and the Shure stereo mic adapter. I've often thought, "I wish this thing had a wider spacing" or "I wish I could rotate/bend this thing." The FlexBar is a big advance and gives me a lot more versatility than I had previously. When I first got it, it was thinner and lighter weight than I had expected. It seemed almost delicate. But after using it for a while, I can report it's pretty durable and works as advertised. It can support a couple of U87s, if that's what you need. In my case, I'm nearly always using a pair of small diaphragm condensers, and the FlexBar is absolutely perfect for that application. It can do X-Y, Blumlein, and ORTF, but I usually record in A-B, with one mic aimed at the neck/body joint and the other at the soundboard between the bridge and the bottom end of the guitar. This requires the mics to be 15 to 16 inches apart, with one raised and one lowered, and the FlexBar can do this. To have this adjustability available on a single stand is a dream come true. When the FlexBar is set up in the default U configuration, the mic-to-mic distance can be varied from 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12 inches). With rotation of the individual mic posts it can achieve a range of spacings from 0 (such as for X-Y) to 17 inches. The only setup I've had trouble with is mid-side. It can be done with certain mic combinations, but not all. I don't use mid-side for acoustic guitar, so it's not a big concern for me. The elephant in the room here may be the price: it's expensive. But it's precision-engineered, and the Triad-Orbit system it's integrated with is itself expensive (and worth it). For users of the Triad-Orbit system, the FlexBar is a no-brainer. Because of its light weight, it also works just fine on a cheap single-pole mic stand (I've tried it). Highly recommended for anyone who records acoustic guitar, who sings and plays guitar at the same time, or who records in stereo.
Music background: Guitarist & recording enthusiast

When Royer Labs got their Technical Grammy in 2013, they couldn't wait to come to Sweetwater to show it off. One thing they impressed on us was how much our amazing relationship helped to get the word out about their products. Of course, getting the word out about their amazing ribbon mics was easy - we've never regretted recommending them. In fact, it wouldn't be immodest to say that Royer was one of the biggest forces behind the ribbon mic's recent return to popularity. In addition to providing greater clarity and transparency to the classic ribbon sound, Royer's designs dramatically reduced the bulk and weight of these mics. That's made it easy for the engineers at Sweetwater Studios to use Royer ribbons for close-miking amps and getting deep into drum kits and acoustic pianos. We absolutely love them, and we're sure you will too.
