Amazing 400-watt Acoustic Combo Amp from Hughes & Kettner

The Hughes & Kettner era 2, like its predecessor the era 1, is a bold, beautifully designed combo acoustic amplifier that brings 400 watts of natural-sounding tone, excellent dynamic response, and impressive headroom to whatever acoustic instrument you use. The increase in wattage on the era 2 means more robust low end coming from two 8" speakers and a single 1" dome tweeter. This speaker setup makes the era 2 ideal for percussive playing styles, as well as double basses and acoustic basses. It also pairs beautifully with external music devices and drum machines. The era 2 is also a full-range PA system with two fully loaded channels — 1 and 2 — that can be tailored to voice and instrument for stellar live performance. In addition, Channel 3 can be used for external devices like smartphones and MP3 players, while Channel 4 can be used for line-level devices, such as mixers and drum machines. Acoustic instrumentalists here at Sweetwater have fallen in love with the era 2 for its diverse array of effects and stellar amplified tone.

A vision realized

When Hughes & Kettner began their mission to design the ideal acoustic amp, they turned to world-renowned amp designer, Michael Eisenmann. Eisenmann had begun his own quest to design the perfect acoustic amp decades earlier, with many successes along the way. With Eisenmann onboard, the vision became reality. The engineers at Hughes & Kettner, along with Eisenmann, began painstakingly selecting the best components to ensure unrivaled sound and performance. The years of hard work and uncompromising standards resulted in the era 1, and the world of acoustic amplification has never been the same. The era 2 is quite literally more of a good thing with preamps that capture sound with amazing clarity and acoustic authenticity with more power and more headroom at 400 watts. The era 2's premium-quality AD/DA converters exhibit maximum transparency, so you get authentic acoustic tone that sounds amazing at any volume level.

Jam-packed with useful features

The era 2 is loaded with every feature a performing musician could ask for. The first two channels possess independent FX engines with 16 great-sounding algorithms, while Preshape and Mode buttons conform to your voice or instrument, optimizing them for maximum impact. Channel 3 is an 1/8" auxiliary input that's ideal for patching in your tablet, smartphone, or media player. Channel 4 is a stereo 1/4" input that doubles as an FX return.

Hughes & Kettner era 2 Features:

  • Built with top-shelf components, including detailed preamps, premium AD/DA, and a custom-made power amp
  • Delivers natural-sounding tone, excellent dynamic response, and impressive headroom at 400 watts

It brings the joy of the sound.

I am an acoustic cello player and not a pro musician. I have a slight hearing loss which sets me back from best pure sound. Then, when I soundproofed my practice room/sound studio, I lost too much of the vibrancy of my playing as well as the joy. Sound was dead. Good for recording, as reverb can always be added to the master, but bad for aesthetic enjoyment of playing in the moment.
I installed moderately expensive speakers and mixer and got back the sweet edge to my music with "Warm Room" FX. I was happy playing again.
Then, I acquired the H&K for portability outside my sound studio, so I could practice or jam anywhere with an electrical outlet. I discovered I love the sound I get through the H&K better than my more expensive studio system. It really brings the joy back into playing my beautiful cello. Rabid H&K fan.

worth the money

I have tried many "all in one" amps - price is less of an issue - sound is the issue. This one did it all with effectively 4 different input it meets all my intimate gig needs. Mic, guitar with full effects - sepoerate volume aux in and in the rare need of a 4th input i can use the effects loop easily. Plus it fits on a speaker post or has a kick stand.

I did my research and couldn't be happier.
Music background: Spanish/Pop guitarist....radio played, industry recognized.

Great sound. Poor durability

I began researching acoustic amps last year. I wanted to purchase something that would truly grasp the full potential of my acoustic instruments primarily my Taylor T5 Custom Koa guitar. I have been playing through the Era 2 for approximately 7 or 8 months and have received nothing but huge positive response from my audiences. However Easter Sunday the tweeter just stopped working suddenly without warning. I have since been trying to get a replacement tweeter from the manufacturer. This has been a very dissapointing experience. I'm not exactly sure who to blame but someone has dropped the ball. As of today the tweeter still has yet to be shipped to me. I couldn't be happier with the sound. But for a 7 month old amp that cost over $1000 I expected for more than this. I would not recommend this brand for acoustic amps to anyone at this point. I wish I had gone with AER or Rivera or maybe even the Mesa Boogie acoustic amp. I will definitely be selling this amp to someone who simply needs a studio amp or home use amp. The durability and demand for a constantly on the go musician is simply not here for the H&K Era 2.

Extreme, random feedback.

Extreme, random feedback from the first time it was plugged in. Regardless of the guitar or microphone used, the amp would produce random feedback which increased in volume and pitch to deafening levels. Seemed to occur primarily, but not always, through one channel. Scary. Performed troubleshooting in accordance with Sweetwater's staff to no avail. Returned it.
