Tailor-made for High-octane Garage Rock

Simply put, if you were rocking in the early 1960s, you wanted a Wilshire. A high-performance axe in its day, the Epiphone Wilshire was built alongside Gibson’s now-historic instruments in the company’s famed Kalamazoo, Michigan, factory. This modern Epiphone Wilshire P-90 is a spot-on re-creation of the Wilshire’s earliest incarnation, complete with a symmetrical double-cutaway mahogany body, a glued-in mahogany neck, and two red-hot PRO P-90 Soapbar pickups. This solidbody electric guitar is a garage-rock connoisseur’s dream come true by virtue of its pragmatic design, full-throttle tone, and head-turning style — it’s tailor-made for bashing out power chords. Epiphone rounded out the Wilshire P-90 with high-quality CTS pots, a rock-solid LockTone Tune-o-matic bridge, a reduced-size Kalamazoo headstock, and an eye-grabbing Epiphone Bikini badge.

Iconic tone from PRO P-90 single-coil pickups

The PRO P-90 single-coil pickups in the Wilshire P-90 are designed with many of the features of the original P-90 pickups created by Seth Lover in the '50s. They're sensitive pickups that respond amazingly well to the nuances of your picking. Dig in and they start to growl with a vocal-like quality. Played cleanly, the sound is rich and sparkling. If you love the articulation of single-coil pickups, but want a bit more girth to your tone, PRO P-90 pickups are the perfect choice. The Wilshire P-90 also includes individual volume and tone controls for each pickup, with high-quality CTS potentiometers to ensure the best sound possible.

Cozy playability from a glued-in, medium "C"-shaped neck

The Epiphone Wilshire P-90 offers the perfect combination of an old-school, hand-filling medium "C"-shaped neck and a modern-feeling, 12-inch-radius Indian laurel fingerboard. At Sweetwater, we’ve found this electric guitar to be a rhythm player’s delight. Whether you’re banging out a punk progression or whipping out tight chord stabs, the Wilshire P-90 will feel like an extension of your body. And while this isn’t the most shred-friendly axe on the planet, the Wilshire P-90’s double-cut solidbody makes accessing all of its 22 medium-jumbo frets effortless. To top it off, this vintage-style guitar’s glued-in neck construction enables it to sustain with no end.

Head-turning looks from period-correct aesthetics

Strapping on the Wilshire P-90 will make you look like the coolest guitarist on your scene. This idiosyncratic, head-turning axe starts with an early-model, symmetrical double-cutaway shape (the Wilshire sported an asymmetrical shape from 1963 on), but it doesn’t stop there. Its distinctively shaped pickguard is emblazoned with an eye-catching stylized “E” logo, and its reduced-size Kalamazoo headstock is adorned with an impossible-to-ignore Epiphone Bikini badge. Period-correct top hat knobs and ivory tuning buttons complete this guitar’s killer look.

Epiphone Wilshire P-90 Features:

  • Spot-on re-creation of a pre-1963 Epiphone Wilshire
  • Symmetrical double-cutaway mahogany body supplies easy fret access
  • Glued-in mahogany neck facilitates extra sustain
  • Easy-playing medium "C"-shaped neck with a 12-inch-radius, 22-fret Indian laurel fingerboard
  • PRO P-90 single-coil pickups yield growling dirty tones and sparkling cleans
  • High-quality CTS potentiometers ensure the best sound possible
  • Rock-solid LockTone Tune-o-matic bridge
  • Distinctively shaped pickguard emblazoned with an eye-catching stylized “E” logo
  • Reduced-size Kalamazoo headstock with an attention-grabbing Epiphone Bikini badge
  • Period-correct top hat knobs and ivory tuning buttons

Compact, powerful, beautiful…and the P90s!!

This was my first guitar with P90 pickups, and what a new sound-world i'd stepped into once I started playing it…WOW!! I had an Epiphone Les Paul before this, but never owned an SG; the Wilshire is closer to the SG in terms of weight; it's probably going to make some players complain of neck dive, but that's fairly easily overcome, as long as you can find a good solution for your own comfort (for example, you can buy a strap that counteracts the lack of weight, or, a gummy appliance you can stick to the inside shoulder of your current strap, which can keep your strap from sliding down due to the "dive"); that being said, if you've ever thought that a Les Paul is a gorgeous instrument but HEAVY, will appreciate the Wilshire.

I almost bought the Coronet (same body, but only one p90, not 2; wraparound/compensated bridge vs stop-bar/tune-o-matic), but getting an "extra" p90 installed at the neck for a measly "extra" $ was too much to resist. Glad I bought the Wilshire, although the concept of a guitar with a single pickup - Im pretty certain i need no neck pickup, but things do change… - does appeal to me; sometimes we have way too much choice… just my opinion, and I don't always feel that way, and not about everything, this is very specific to my own personal ideas about guitar & music'(and life) in general.

The setup was great out of the box, and i love the place where the unbound neck meets the fretboard, it looks unlike any other guitar I own besides my Yamaha acoustic; the only light color in the area is the white fret marker dots, but the darkness of that area of the guitar I just think looks really cool, just brown from the laurel fretboard - which I love, btw, at least in the short-term, & the red on the back of the neck; no binding, and a minimum of white/light colors (I'll include a couple pics at least).

Personally, I don't believe I'll ever narrow my search down to a single guitar or three; I enjoy the different aspects that the various guitar manufacturers put into their output. But if i were of a mind to "simplify", the Wilshire is one of the handful of guitars I'll always keep. It is compact & powerful. The body is a double-cut, red, slightly smaller than a strat body. The Wilshire comes with a tortoise-shell pickguard, which I found much preferable to the white one that comes with The Coronet; that being said, I've since removed it, so as not to hide the gorgeous mirror finish and the see-through red lacquer on top of the beautiful mahogany underneath…definitely a move i should've executed immediately. The Wilshire in simply a beautiful instrument, at an insanely-low price. Plus it's a new take on an Epiphone original design, not simply a "budget guitar inspired by Gibson" (as are the Coronet and the others in this same Epiphone family of guitars, incl the Crestwood, also Epi originals). I've also removed the badge from the headstock - i didn't like it, it looked to me like a loose, unfurled condom floating inside a pair of disembodied jockey shorts; anyway, the Wilshire looks infinitely nicer with more of a "mystery guitar" feel about it… I suppose it varies by guitar and opinion-of-player, and Fenders are a different story, but why cover up a beautiful finish with logos and other…stuff (I'll be nice

An all around great guitar

I'm really enjoying this guitar, it arrived in great condition and plays well. I picked it out in search of necks with a Medium C shape (which I found surprisingly difficult to find) due to issues with my left wrist causing pain after a while. I have still had to work around that, but overall I have found it to be a very comfortable guitar to play. I love the shape, it's a beautiful color, and it plays so smooth. I honestly couldn't complain.

For the price it's a very solid guitar.

Great little retro rocker!

I ordered this without having played one simply because I recently got a Casino Coupe with P90's and love the sound of the pickups. The color and design of this guitar just kept getting my attention, so I had to get it. While I had a great experience with Sweetwater and my sales engineer, the 55 point inspection really isn't what I had hoped for. I realize it's not a setup, but the intonation was way off on a couple of strings. I've adjusted it as much as I can, but I love the guitar enough that I will get a proper setup done. Having said all that, this thing is a great sounding blast to play and is difficult to put down or even to quit staring at!

Awesome & Versatile Guitar

I've had LOTS of guitars but always came back to my "old dependable" Strat. I was on the road and stopped in a music store to just try out of few things and see if there was anything I couldn't live without. After playing 10 guitars and having nothing strike me, I saw this right as I was heading out the door. I stopped and picked it up, and to make a long story shorter it's been my #1 axe since. I can't believe that in my 67 years and having played seriously since I was 16 I've never played a guitar that's more 'me'. While the Strat has a nice palette of colors, for me this has more 'shades'. It's bringing inspired playing out of me that I haven't felt for years.

Better than average Epiphone

I bought 2 of these guitars!!! One is going to Europe for recording with and the other stays home to write on!! Great guitar and a true Epiphone design!! Not a laminated body!! Solid mahogany!! A much finer instrument than the average Epiphone!
