Groove in Lightweight, Ergonomic Style

Ibanez serves up another enchanting low-end concoction with its EHB ergonomic headless multi-scale bass guitar. This unique bass delivers all the sonic power you could ask for without the added weight of a headstock and with a multi-scale fretboard that makes for improved playability all around. Its ergonomic design, fast graphite-reinforced 9-piece panga panga/walnut neck, and smooth bound panga panga fingerboard create the perfect surface for precision fretting and untethered grooving. The poplar burl top greets the eyes on impact, and a selected lightweight African mahogany body contributes to decreased weight while boasting a warm, full tone. The electric stars of this show are the Nordstrand Custom Big Split pickups that offer bassists a vari-mid 3-band EQ and EQ bypass switch to temper their tone. Set the groove free with an EHB bass from Sweetwater!

Nordstrand Big Split pickups deliver the tone

Nordstrand Big Split passive pickups deliver classic fat, punchy tone on demand whether you're after that P- or J-style tone. Their split-coil humbucking design bucks the annoying hum, but delivers the beef. They’re amazingly responsive, too. Dig in, and they growl with the big cats. Pull back, and they’re sweet and clear. Go ahead: slap and pop — they thrive on abuse! Ask any tone-savvy bass player at Sweetwater, and they’ll confirm that, onstage or in the studio, your bass will sound incredible with Nordstrand Big Split pickups. The electronics section also offers users plenty of sonic options thanks to a vary-mid 3-band EQ and balancer control.

An ergonomic design second to none

Ibanez designed the EHB Ergonomic Headless Bass for players who crave a lighter instrument with all the possible speed and fluidity capable of a bass guitar. To do this, the company engineered the entire bass with ergonomics in mind, taking into account how the hand should rest on the fingerboard, the slope of the neck, and the selection of tonewoods. And so the EHB ended up with a gorgeous poplar burl top over a lightweight African mahogany body that looks, feels, and sounds amazing. Joining them are a 9-piece panga panga/walnut neck with a comfortable profile and a bound panga panga fingerboard featuring luminescent side dot inlays for confident fretwork on dark stages. And Ibanez went all out on hardware: this bass harbors 24 medium stainless steel frets, custom Ibanez tuning machines, and the famous Mono-rail V bridge. Unlike single-body bridges, each Mono-rail saddle is completely separate from the others and double-anchored, creating minimal sympathetic vibration and promoting efficient energy transfer between string and body. You'll feel and hear the difference!

Ibanez: a brief history

Ibanez began its life in 1908 as the Hoshino Gakki company in Nagoya, Japan. However, the company didn’t get into the guitar business until 1929, when it started importing Salvador Ibanez guitars from Spain. In 1935, Hoshino Gakki began building Spanish acoustic guitars under the “Ibanez Salvador” name, which was later shortened to Ibanez. Although Ibanez began manufacturing electric guitars in 1957, the company was relatively unknown in the West until the 1960s, when it started producing guitars based on American designs. By the late 1970s, Ibanez stopped producing derivative instruments and began manufacturing the innovative original guitar and bass designs that the company is now known for. Ibanez is also famous for its effect pedals, most notably the Tube Screamer. Sweetwater is proud to offer to you such a fine line of distinguished musical instruments.

Solid tone in a short scale

I actually purchased the SMS by mistake, thinking it was the standard scale EHB Multiscale bass. But when I received it I was amazed by the balanced tone and easy playability. The B string is quite usable above the 5th fret and not bad down to a low B.

The sweepable mid control makes the active electronics really useful, but I prefer the passive sound of the Nordstrand pickups.

If you try one out, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
