Take Back Your Guitar's Tone!

For years, guitar players have been complaining that when they connect their guitar to a wireless system, the guitar sound changes. For this reason, many players have resisted going wireless. Now Radial Engineering, makers of the popular Radial Tonebone distortion pedals and the Radial line of direct boxes, has introduced a new product called the Dragster, a passive load correction device that connects between guitar and active buffered circuits to reintroduce the natural tone of the instrument as if it was connected directly to an amplifier.

Radial Engineering Dragster Pickup Load Impedance Compensator at a Glance:
  • Allows adjustable impedance loading between pickup and wireless transmitter
  • Compact, simple device mounts on strap or pedal board

Allows adjustable impedance loading between pickup and wireless transmitter
The Dragster is a compact device that corrects the loading and impedance of the guitar pickup that is lost when the guitar passes through a buffer such as those found on wireless systems and effect pedals. What the Dragster does is allow the player to correct the loading and impedance that becomes skewed. This is done with a single dial. Turn full clockwise, loading is off. Turning the control counterclockwise bring in the desired level. Best of all, the Dragster is completely passive!

Compact, simple device mounts on strap or pedal board
The Dragster is a simple device that features a 1/4" input jack for the guitar, a 1/4" output that goes to the wireless or pedal board, and then a single Drag control that allows the user to dial in the desired amount of Drag. The Dragster is extremely compact at less than 1" high, 2" wide and less than 2" deep. It has a perforated bottom plate that allows the unit to be fixed to a guitar strap or screwed down into a pedal board. Made from aluminum and steel, the Dragster is lightweight and is finished in a distinctive baked blue enamel.

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Highly recommended for DI recording bass & guitar

I just picked one of these things up and am really glad I did!! I was skeptical, mainly b/c I didn't really understand how it works or what it does but I thought for $... it was worth a shot. Anybody recording DI bass or guitar should try one of these. It's like a tone control and "feel" control in one. I found the sweet spot for both bass and guitar right away and proceeded to get the best recorded DI tracks I've ever recorded, AND the best tones out of my Amplitube plugin that I've ever gotten, by a mile. I mounted the thing right to my rack and will leave it plugged in all the time. Can't wait to try it with reamping a track. Highly recommended!

Dragster very disappointing

I am very disappointed in the Dragster performance. First pedal in my chain is the buffered Boss TU-3 tuner. The output of the Dragster (there are no markings on the Dragster for input and output so apparently it doesn't matter) was connected to the input of the TU-3.

First disappointment was that there was very little difference in my system sound with either my Fender Strat or my Gibson R8 as the drag control was rotated back and forth between minimum and maximum.

The second and most serious disappointment was that with all other pedal and amp settings the same, the overall volume of my system was cut in half with the Dragster connected to the input of the TU-3 compared to plugging my guitars directly into the TU-3.

I waited several weeks to receive the Dragster. I guess I could return it but it really is not worth my time. My amp and pedalboard definitely sound better without the Dragster in the circuit than it does with.
Music background: Bedroom player. I design and build all my own vacuum tube guitar amps (4 amps in all).

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Chris McCown

I thought I would give the Radial Tonebone Dragster a try on my wireless guitar system. Now I don't believe I will ever be going back to a cable! The Dragster gave me back the bottom end, and I felt very comfortable with my tone after adding it to my wireless setup. Previously for "important gigs," I would be sure to use a cable because it sounded better. Now, I am wireless and free at every gig. Plus, with with the wireless, in-ear monitors, and the Dragster, my guitar strap now looks like Batman's utility belt - which of course is an added bonus!
