A Killer Bass Cab from Darkglass

The Darkglass DG212NE bass cabinet is designed to complement the bass-centric company’s line of pedals and amp heads, but it can turn any amp head into a total powerhouse. Stocked with two 12" custom-designed neodymium drivers from renowned speaker builder Eminence, the DG212NE balances its massive sound with a lightweight design that gigging musicians are sure to love. Toneheads at Sweetwater are nuts about Darkglass products, and the DG212NE is no different. It is capable of reproducing stunningly detailed clean tones and brutal distortion that somehow manages to let your articulations shine through—something bass players appreciate. Whether you’ve got a pedalboard stacked with Darkglass effects or you’re looking for a world-class cabinet to complete your rig, the DG212NE might be the perfect choice for you!

Fat tone, lumbar-friendly weight

Lugging around a heavy bass cab can be a drag! But, given a choice between saving their backs or having a super-fat bass tone, bass players usually pick the tone! The Darkglass DG212NE cabinet eliminates the sacrifice, delivering a massive sound in a lightweight, lumbar-friendly package that features a paulownia cabinet, Baltic birch front baffle, and neodymium drivers. And, it’s all wrapped up in Darkglass’s distinctive carbon-fiber Tolex for a striking look guaranteed to turn heads.

Optimized for Darkglass pedals and amp heads

Darkglass built its reputation on the harmonic complexity of its effects, preamps, and amp heads, which can add richness and punch to clean tones and deliver grimy overdrive and snarling distortion with a focus that never muddies up the mix. The DG212NE cabinet is specially voiced to bring out the best in Darkglass gear, with custom-designed Eminence speakers, passive crossover, and 1000 watts of RMS power handing, for unmatched tone in any genre and style.

Amazing clarity and punch - loud as all hell

This thing is just the best. Who ever said 12s are not for bass, wait no one said that, get 12s. Never experienced such punch before. You will feel this cab inside your soul; it will penetrate the brain blood barrier; it will melt your bloody eye sockets with its pure demonic presence. It slaps like a hell beast from another dimension; it cuts like your 4th grade lunch lady on mystery meat day. Matched with 900watt Microtubes. 900 watt the f@&$ Who would ever need so many? This guy is who! I have the master at maybe 5 percent and I've played average size bars. This is the jack of all cabs master of every; buy it and cry later, some tears of pure bass nirvana.

Boom Boom Pow!!!

Just used my DG212 last night in my full cover/bar band last night, and it performed flawlessly! It's a 4x10 feel w/o the extra weight and more compact cab. I ran my PRS Gary Grainger 5 into my AO900 with the 2x12. My settings were flat, and just had the compressor around 10-12 o'clock, with the gain at noon, and the Master at 9 o'clock. Sent a Pre-EQ DI to the board and controlled my tone with the bass(mainly added highs for the slap & aggressive songs). I also had the tweeter control at 3 o'clock, but could probably dial it back to noon, and just use the head's EQ. Now I just need to incorporate ALL my DI options(X Ultra, Pre EQ, Post EQ)!!!!

Where's the Beef? I found an entire side of tasty BEEF!

When you have more than enough power in the amp and a speaker cabinet that can take it all and more, the results can be fantastic.

LOOKS: Paired with the sleek aluminum chassis of the Vintage Microtubes 900 watt head, the silver cabinet material and grill cloth of the DG212NE creates a visual delight. The weave of the tolex is diagonal while the weave of the speaker cover is horizontal with more contrast. It's not sparkly but stands out in its own beautiful way.

Plug it in and turn it on and you're at a whole new level.

TONE: An "ANSI standard" Fender Precision came alive with this cab. There is a knob for the tweeter but after popping a few notes, there was no need to adjust from the factory-set middle of the range.

Next up was a Carvin 5-string active bass with P/J p'ups and flats. I normally wouldn't dial the balance knob towards the split coil because it's too thick for my other rig. Active, passive, plucking over the neck, picking at the bridge it can reggae, it can djent.

Can it rock? My back-up 5er, an Ibby SR505 on roundwounds answered that question in the affirmative. Exploring the distortion engines on the VMT head and various effects on my pedal board gave good results though I had to plug everything into a power conditioner to cut the hiss.

Finally, an acoustic electric sounded better than it ever has though I had to make a continuous effort to keep feedback at bay when it was cranked up. That brings me to the next point.

VOLUME: Whether you want to rattle eyeballs with harmonics or randomly rearrange the furniture with fundamentals, you can do it. As we say online, OMG, LOL, etc! Nobody was home so I got it up to ¾ volume but with the gain still quite low and a flat-ish EQ. No drummer I know is going to keep up with that. The full Marshall stack, yes of course, the Mesa half-stack or Fender 212 combo? Maybe. I'm pretty sure I can drown those last two players out.

WEIGHT: Honestly, it's lighter than it looks. My old 1x15 JBL wedges weigh more. The main reason I didn't go with the 4x10 cab was the width. I have to go up a flight of stairs to get to the rehearsal/recording studio above our drummers garage. This package is perfect for that. The handles are solid as rocks. The corner protectors look a little wimpy but they are getting the job done so far.

I would recommend this 212 cab to anyone who plays loud and only wants to haul a mini-fridge.

First cab ever owned!!

First to start off the cab itself is very beautiful and stunning the way it is constructed, designed. I have been using it for practice & also for live gigs and wow it really does not weigh a whole lot taking it to places! I have a darkglass microtube v2 that I use as my bass head & this being my first "premium" purchase as a bassist, I am very satisfied with this purchase. I watched tones of videos and reviews to see if it was. Hopefully I don't get much hate for this but I did a comparison between an ampeg & a darkglass & the Darkglass blew it out the ball park for sures! I was not a fan of how the ampeg sounded & the Darkglass just sounded absolutely amazing compared to it. As for as sound & clarity it's definitely there & man this cab has a punch to it being loud. I love it so much! This being my first cab, is special to me so I hope it stays loyal & around for a while haha.
Also huge shoutout to my man Kyle Baker; my sales rep who's been helping me with this purchase & previous purchases as well!! You rock!

Great Cabinet!

I'm the one who wrote the 3 stars review on the Ampeg AV212 cabinet. There's a huge difference between the Ampeg cabinet & this Darkglass. This Darkglass cabinet has a lot more tight bottom, headroom, perfect mids (for me) and takes a lot of power much better than the Ampeg. It DOES cost 50% more, so I guess the analogy of getting what you pay for applies.
The top B string got a little nasty on my Ampeg V4BH at max levels, but a 4 string bass would have been perfect.
It did work very well with my Classic SVT head & Bergantino Forte amps. The mids were quick & easy to dial in & the low B was VERY loud & clean. This cabinet takes high wattage amps well. I then ran the Ampeg SGT-DI preamp pedal & Berg Forte into this cab and it sounded like I don't have to carry either of those two tube amps around anymore , and gives the most realistic vintage Acoustic tone through my Dicosimo 360+ preamp that I've heard yet.
I don't play metal but I don't see how this won't be fine for classic rock, country, etc. It's going to rehearsal in a couple of days so we'll see. I'm 67 y.o. & am going strictly to lighter gear, but am not willing to accept less favorable tone in the trade off. Very happy!
