Thermally-aged Top for Vintage-correct Tone

Gibson has outdone themselves with this 1960 Hummingbird acoustic guitar. To give it the look and tone of a well-aged vintage instrument, Gibson has chosen a thermally-aged Sitka spruce top to go with the mahogany back and sides. This tonewood combo yields a bright and balanced tone with plenty of harmonic complexity, and sounds great in practically any musical setting. And in true Hummingbird fashion, the 1960 Hummingbird features an authentic hand-painted pickguard. Complete with a 1960s style VOS cherry sunburst finish, this 1960 Hummingbird is an exquisite acoustic guitar.

Thermally aged Sitka spruce top

If you've ever had the opportunity to play a great vintage acoustic guitar, you know how magical of an experience it can be. And if you've ever had a chance to strum a true 1960s Gibson Hummingbird, you know it takes that experience to a whole new level. Now you can get that same inspiring tone out of your new Gibson Acoustic 1960 Hummingbird. Gibson thermally ages the solid Sitka spruce top on the instrument down to a cellular level. Strum a chord, and you'll be greeted with the voice only found on the truly classic vintage acoustic guitars.

Nitrocellulose lacquer finish enhances the tone, look, and feel

The Gibson Acoustic 1960 Hummingbird wears a gorgeous 1960s-style natural nitrocellulose lacquer finish, a finish favored by many Sweetwater guitarists. Nitro finishes — standard back in the day — are significantly thinner than today's polyurethane finishes, allowing the instrument to vibrate more freely. Nitro finishes not only look and feel authentically vintage — they also enhance the instrument's tonal qualities.

Classic Gibson craftsmanship and timeless acoustic tone

From their humble beginnings in Kalamazoo, Michigan, back in the late 1800s to present-day Bozeman, Montana, Gibson Acoustic has been making some of the finest acoustic instruments on the planet for generations. When you pick up this limited-edition 1960 Hummingbird, you know you're getting the finest tonewoods, quality hardware, and incredible attention to detail. Scores of guitarists here at Sweetwater are Gibson devotees, and like all of the quality instruments Gibson builds, this 1960 Hummingbird was made to sound great and stand the test of time.

Gibson Acoustic 1960 Hummingbird Acoustic Guitar Features:

  • 1960s-style Hummingbird, with authentic 1960s hand-painted pickguard
  • Thermally aged red spruce top offers vintage looks, feel, and harmonic complexity
  • Mahogany back and sides offer a warm, round sound
  • Bone nut
  • Nitrocellulose lacquer finish enhances tone, looks, and feel

What a dream of a guitar!
This is such a great singer songwriter guitar. It compliments vocals so well without overpowering them or falling short.

I recently bought a Martin D-17 and had been playing that for a few weeks prior to this guitar arriving. When I first started playing the hummingbird I was a tad let down, but later realized I was associating a more quiet guitar with being not as good of a guitar. I kept playing the hummingbird and as it started to open up and I sang with it I just fell in love.

I love my Martin, but it's better suited with vocals for songs where I am absolutely belting it. That thing is a big resonant cannon. This hummingbird just feels right at home as singer's companion for just about everything. The tone is really well balanced and it plays as good on the 12th fret as the first

I didn't care for the nickel strings that came standard on it so I swapped them out for 12-53 Elixir Phosphor Bronze and that did the trick. I could never ask for a better guitar. It checks all the boxes for me, outside of wishing it came with a pick up, but that's an easy thing to take care of.

And the finish is incredible. Sometime I just pop open the case to stare at it for a minute when I don't have time to play. When the sun reflects off the top and pick guard it's just a beautiful piece of art.

It's a guitar I can tell is going to continue to open up nicely over time. I can feel it open even after just 20-30 minutes of playing. I played it for 3 hours straight after putting new strings on it and never tired of the tone or got frustrated with the playability at any point. Gibson knocked it out of the part.

I LOVE this guitar
This guitar is just beautiful and plays like a dream. I have four Taylor guitars that I love. They aren't going anywhere, but this is just totally different. Ivan is an amazing engineer. I've bought most of my guitars from him. I was on the fence about which Hummingbird to get. He was so helpful in breaking down all the differences for me. In the end, I struggled a bit between this and the original really based on price. This was a stretch. Ivan worked with me as I decided. I have no regrets about choosing this one. I just love the look and I found it to play better for me (more resonant) than the original. Of course that is personal preference. But if you love this, get it. You will not regret.

PS- I love the little extra touches too. The period correct case is just a cool extra. It came with a humidipak and a microfiber cloth.

1960 Hummingbird
Great guitar, always attracted to these as a kid! Very nice playability, sounds wonderful. Looks like a Hummingbird! Jared from Sweetwater was extremely helpful in picking among the three available, thanks as always.

Hummingbirds they hum their sound
This guitar has a beautiful, lush sound. It seems to excel at chords, or anything with depth, but it's also good for finger-pickin. With a capo, the tone is so resonant and shimmering it almost sounds like a harpsichord or mandolin. This is the first Gibson acoustic I've ever played - I own a Waterloo MH-12 and a Larrivée parlor, and used to have a 000-1 Martin. So I didn't really know what to expect, except what I'd seen on YouTube. But once I started playing it, I could not stop. The sound is just so rich. It's not a Martin sound, but I gather that's the point. The finish is cool, not in-your-face red, and this 1960's version is generally 1/2 pound lighter than other new versions due to the baked top and/or the difference in bracing. For me, I wanted the lightest guitar possible - they always seems to ring out better. Mine is under 4 pounds. I also LOVE the pickguard though I know it's not universally loved. I like the butterfly. It's a freedom party for insects and birds, right there on the pickguard. Overall, beautiful instrument.
