Fat 50s for The Win
These Fender Custom Shop Fat 50s pickups transformed the sound of my player 1 Strat- I almost like it better than my American Performer Strat now!!!

Fender's best set yet
For single coils that produce a nice vintage sound, these are the ones. They are true single coils like the ones Fender has been making for over 70 years. I put these in a hand made strat I built as a replica 1959 Strat. (Not a parts caster. By built I mean I made all the wood parts from lumber, installed the frets and finished it in nitro lacquer) I paired these with CTS 250k pots and a CRL switch, paper in oil cap and cloth wire. It sounds amazing and if I had to pick one thing I dont like it would probably be the pole piece stagger isnt exactly what id prefer but its still fantastic. They have a really round low end and a bright clear high end with a strong focus on lower mids on the neck and middle and a strong focus on upper mids on the bridge. They really shine on positions 2 and 4 with wonderfully jangly sound. They respond good to natural overdrive and work best with tube amps. Alder and maple strats are wonderful with these though Im sure theyd be great for any strat. Really a lively pickup set with true single coil snap and punch.

Makes your Strat sound like a Strat
Because Strats have been around for so long, everyone has tried to reinvent he wheel. The result is guitars that look like a Strat but don't sound like one. Not bad, just different. In the past, I bought Strats that came with 60s, Tex-Mex, etc and ended up putting in boutique pickups that were a little more "detailed" than OEM Fender, but still lacked the quack/cluck in positons 2 & 4 that make a Strat what it is. Maybe I just had the wrong guitar? By shear chance, I bought a second hand Strat that had Fat 50s. Bingo. That was the sound. I now have Fat 50s in three of my Strats. The only bad thing? The guitars sound almost the same because the Fat 50s are so distinctive.

Note that these pickups are quite bright and fairly low output. Great for blues, classic rock, super for country, even pretty good for jazz. If you need a powerful pickup to push a lot of distortion, there are better choices for that.

My Strat is reborn!
Installed these on my 2004 American Standard Strat. To my ears these are a little hotter than the originals but with much more clarity and punch but without harshness on the top end. I played the guitar on a recent gig and it cut through the band volume and mix like a champ, performing as well as my Custom Shop Strat. I couldn't be happier and as always want to thank my Sweetwater Engineer, Pat Walsh, for his guidance, expertise and level of service.

Fat 50s pickups
I have these pickups in my vintera 50s surf green stratocaster. I love them. Clear as crystal with a chime. Great for finger style and blues.
