Great Tom Mic Upgrade!

For most shows, my drum mics are normally backlined. Last week, the sound tech and I were discussing my new Sure Beta 98AMP/C tom mics. He asked if he could try them out during sound check. Wow! My toms have never sounded so good! Kept them for the whole show.

Share Beta 98 AMP/C

Just bought the Shure Beta 98 AMP/C, for a snare batter-side mic....LOVE the mic itself...used it last weekend on a gig.....my only complaint is the multi-function clamping system....it"s rather blocky and clunky and a bit in the way when trying to negotiate it with the rack toms that are closest to the snare....would prefer a single purpose mic holder like the Earthworks RM-1. Shure designed this clamp to be used on several different applications, which for me is a bit of a waste, and makes it too large...but, other than that, the mic itself is very good....

Sweet sounding!!

Compared against a duo Audix D2 & D4 on an african djembe & cajon. When counted to the sound port, there was minimal equeing required to make it sound just as good, if not better than, the D2/D4 combo with less cabling/mounts. Sounds great!! Crisp capturing of the string snap highs as well as the guttural lows. Now, I've got to buy a subwoofer!!! Rugged construction as well. I can see more of these in my future!!

I'm not a pro

I'm not a pro but I have been mic-ing my drums for a couple of years now, have 14 mics on a 7 piece kit, with about 20 cymbals. Had a Sure SM-57 on the top of the snare which worked fine but I wanted to mount an electronic pad to the right and a Cowbell above and had nowhere to put a bulky mic.
This mic did the trick and is better that I thought. Fairly hot mic. Easy to position and is WAY out of the way. Goose neck is strong not flimsy so stays in place. Haven't hit it with a stick yet. (That I know of).
There are probably better mics out there that will sound/record better but they are expensive. Great mic for the price.
